  • Rest in Peace my dear friend.
a slide show of a few Tommy Makem photo's. For some reason there is a small flutter in Tommy's voice...I'm not sure why, the original recording is clear.

Love Tommy Maken singing this song. My mother always sang this song at the wonderful sing-along parties we had growing up in Dublin Ireland. She was the mother of nine children who loved Ireland and longed to see a United Ireland. It didn't happen in her lifetime, it might in mine, her daughter, Fiona. May my mother, father, late husband and Tommy Maken R.I.P. I am blessed for having been born Irish. Long Live Ireland and the cause for Irish freedom.

I took my rock 'n' roll brother to see a Tommy Makem concert, and when Tommy began this song, I wasn't the only one in tears. A majestic human being with a monumental talent that reached the heart and touched the soul. God, he gave so much of himself so that we may hear and know and learn. I hope God loves heartfelt Irish songs sung by the best of them!

I am still amazed that he and the Clancys are gone...He and Liam, along with Ron Daderio on stage, were a force... I hope that there are others in the future to carry on their incredible legacy of music and charm....Peace

This is my personal favourite version by Tommy. It is one of the best written history songs I have ever heard. Old woman = Ireland , the 4 fields = the 4 provinces of Ireland , her proud sons = those that fought and died for Ireland. even the famine is brought in to this song. Genius = Tommy.

@@ianbaillie6868 It was in fact written by Tommy in a car one night as he drove across the border from Dundalk to Keady...I heard him tell the story years ago on radio. "Makem frequently described the song as having been inspired by a drive through the "no man's land" adjoining Northern Ireland, where he saw an old woman tending livestock. She was oblivious to the political boundaries that loomed so large in the public's eye; the land was older than the argument, and she didn't care what was shown on the map."

Just after 9-11, Tommy sang at a Celtic Festivalin upstate New York. The crowd kept asking for Four Green Fields, but Tommy sang Barrett's Privateers instead-looking a bit startled when the crowd roared "God Damn them all!"with him on the chorus!

I really never new Tommys music, but I did know him as a man. He was a regular customer at my photo bussiness. I would spend hours talking with him as we made prints of his trips to Ireland. He was a kind and interesting man, so proud of his sons carrying on in music.

He’s quite gaunt here. Beautiful man. He did so much for Irish and World music. This song is incredible and heartbreaking - if you are Irish. And moreso if you’re from The North. And I wish my father had lived to see a United Ireland.
