That's real folk. I miss this kind of music, without drums and electric guitar. Why my world here in Finland and Europe is much hard? Make love, not war. All you need is love.

I can barely hold back the tears with this song. The human can be such a beast but on the other hand so forgiving. Music, to me, is a medicine to mend broken hearts.

I agree with you. Many times i had to cry, when listening to this song. In my opinion its Dubliner´s best one.

There is absolutely nothing so stirring as listening to Luke in full voice. I agree with James B - "please God, give us back Luke Kelly" - His Raglan Road gives me goosebumps. Luke & Ronnie Drew will NEVER be forgotten - great performers.

We forget what a phenomenon these guys were. Remember going to the Albert Hall in the 1960.s with my mates smuggling in brown paper bags filled with Danno's (pint bottles of Guinness). Just the lads onstage with their marvellous natural deliveries of great songs playing their instruments and nothing else. 5,000 punters and you could hear a pin drop. Magic! Subsequently, spent a very long evening, night and morning with Barney McKenna and a gang of the lads in Mooney's in the Strand. He played and sang all night. Fabulous!

The trick with doing this song justice is to sing it like a love song, not a rebel song, some people make the error of blasting it at full volume.

This is one of those songs that, because of the solemnity given off by their absolute perfection, I can listen to only in that rare, wonderful state of mind that you have to be in to lie on the grass to gaze at the stars.

An all time hero of mine. I got locked into McDaids in Dublin off Grafton street in 1968 with my mate Liam Lamb in his company during "the holy hour". We were lab technicians in the path labs at UCD Earlsfort terrace and forgot to get out in time to go back to work. We just sat in the corner and had a few. Later that evening I was walking down Grafton street and was telling a senior technician called Jack what had happened. I thought it might impress him. He was listening politely to this country lad from Kildare telling the tale when the bold Luke appeared on the other side of the street, having just left the pub. Howaye Lukie shouted Jack. Howaya Jack he shouted back. I was mortified as it turned out they had grown up together and knew each others families intimately.

Luke was a dead ringer for my childhood buddy Johnny Carroll. Our fathers were buddies and both of them were first generation from Ireland.. Johnny and I went to a Catholic school and had fights almost daily with the un-uniformed kids from the public school. 55 years later, I miss my friend. My wife has asked me why the Irish always fight,, because we had to Also the question was asked,” is this a private fight or can anyone join in?”
