Subbing! Great video. I was thinking of getting this exact machine and using it for the duel purpose of having it for my personal work station and docking it with an external Thunderbolt GPU enclosure for some reasonable gaming to replace my MacBook and aging desktop. I think this will work quite well for those purposes. Thanks again, great review!

Same here I ruled out Dell Latitudes due to quality issue reports and Lenovo due to poor screens. What prices are you seeing? It seems if you are patient you can snag a G8 for ~350-$400. Only downside seems to be soldered ram (but its very common so whatever) and a little toasty due to such powerful hardware in a small package especially if you get one with a Nvidia chip. Besides this I am looking at one of those Acer Swifts pretty sexy little laptops that pack a punch.
I will give you a pro tip make sure the one you are looking at has the black oval ambient light sensor to the left of the camera or else it will only have a 250 nit screen which is pretty dim!

It would be so good if they add a 3rd button on the trackpad for scrolling with the track point, and if they centred the trackpad by removing the numbpad

to which numbpad do you refer? I see none

Wait till you hit the power button by accident! It's actually a key on the keyboard.

We have a few of these at work. They run hot and their fans are noticeable when plugged in. So not good for anything other than light work, definitely not a workstation, unless you want to put up with the constant fan noise. They feel like a downgrade from the previous 6 core 12 thread intels.

Well, they aren't meant to replace 6 core H series workstations, HP has the fury and studio line for this purpose

Thanks so much for the review. I pulled the trigger on one of these, but the 15 inch model. Have only had it for a couple of days, but am loving it so far. I'm using mine as a Linux workstation. I could have gone for the beefy ZBook Fury, but I really didn't need that much grunt, and decided to go for "thin and light" this time. It runs Linux very well. I picked mine up secondhand (from a company that went bust) for less than half the retail price, which really sweetened the deal 🙂. I do, however, think it's a stretch to refer to the ZBook Firefly 15 G8 as a "mobile workstation". Mine has an Nvidia T500 dedicated GPU, but does that really mean it's a "workstation"? Anyway, the only complaint I have is the arrow keys (in particular, the half-height up and down arrow keys). Not a deal breaker, and I'm slowing getting used the them. I might just start trying to use the arrow keys on the number pad (just need to remember to keep num-lock off). Something I really love about the ZBook Firefly 15 G8 is the ability to completely disable (power off) the Nvidia GPU from within the BIOS (for those times when I don't need it and want to squeeze as much battery life as possible out of a charge). Oh, and the fact the video output ports are not hard-wired to the Nvidia GPU - something that all gaming laptops do, but a trend that is also finding its way in to workstations (like the Dell Precision line). Mine came with a USB-C charger, but I'm going to purchase the barrel charger, as I prefer these to USB-C charging. I'm also going to see if I can charge my Firefly with a portable power brick - I hear this can be done (with the right power bank).

@arless It is, but with the new AMD CPUs out, I would never get a quad-core U-series 11th gen Intel CPU. I'm now eyeballing the HP EliteBook 865 G9 (with the 8-core AMD Ryzen 7 6850U). This new AMD APU has the new RNA2 integrated graphics, which (according to everything I've read) has very impressive performance. I've been using Linux on a Ryzen 7 5825U APU for the last 2 months, and have been VERY impressive with the performance! I haven't tried any of the new Intel 12th gen U-series silicon yet.

@@MnemonicCarrierWhat did you decide? The 865 G9 goes for twice or more the cost of a FireFly G8 due to the AMD fanboy hype. Intel P series is just as fast as AMD if you can find one of those too

Thanks for the video! Do you have the 400-nit 100% sRGB panel? Also, does the screen display ghosting? I recently purchased a Thinkpad which is a 100% sRGB panel (great color accuracy!) but had really bad ghosting issue!

  • @kakashi99908

because these are so unknown outside of the business world they are practically the same cost as a regular G8 Elitebook or even cheaper

Hey nice overall reivew of this beast with the beauty. Thanks for that. I am from Bengaluru, India & have few questions in my mind before ordering one, if you may want to answer them.
    1) whats the max size of nvme ssd can this support?
    2) I am a linux user for past 15 years, and will this nvidia T500 support ubuntu/linux?
    3) whats the maximum Gb RAM can i push into this with discrete nvidia graphics card? How many slots of DDR4 RAM does this have?
    4) Will this support a 3 monitor setup? ie., connecting additional 2 external monitors along with inbuilt monitor?
    Appreciate you answers in advance.

Excellent review.. quick question, could you please advise the screen brightness on your unit.. I have seen reviews recommending the 400 nits screen as the 250 nits is pretty dull... what has been your observation?

Thank you :) for This unit is the 400 version and its quite bright - I don't keep my screen brightness at full most of the time so you should be fine!
