  • Literacy coach Welsley Jongko (‪@littleliteracynook‬ ) joins us in the studio today to talk about the process of learning to read and to encourage those of us who have beginning readers at home! She explains the current reading crisis in America and the simple but effective things parents can do to support their children on their way to become lifelong readers.     Thank you so much for making this! I’m in my 30s but your description of Abby’s experience matches my own in many ways! I was homeschooled and when I struggled with reading and multiplication my mom found right brain teaching techniques. It helped me get through those subjects but then I went into public high school and everything took me forever to do. I was smart so to keep good grades I sacrificed sleep to have the extra time I needed to complete things. It only recently started to click (after watching things like this) that maybe the reason I took three times as long as my peers to read and write was because I’m dyslexic!
