This is immensely helpful- thank you! Sometimes you don't know exactly how to phrase the issue you are facing into a google search to find the answers you need. This will save me a lot of tedious math work.

coming from Illustrator, Sketchup is driving me nuts. You shouldn't have to go through all this just to scale something by dimensions, if I click on an object, I should be able to type a value into the 'measurements' box sitting right there, but you can't. Seems so unintuitive

You can actually, just type in 700mm for instance. (700 mm, with a space, does not work though)

Oh.MY.Gosh - you deserve all the likes, all the time.
I consider myself very competent with Sketchup and I'm kicking myself for not knowing this...I have always used a line for measurements and missed this such useful feature, especially for scale ratio's that are non-recurring decimals. This has helped me so much man, Kudo's

  • @lavandermusic

Is the method somehow different for Mac vs PC?
After I dial in the dimensions I want to use and press enter, (as mentioned in the video at around 1:45) it does not prompt me to choose a scaleup option, rather it simply inputs the detentions as scale reference points and the task is still my own to resize utilizing the reference points. Still very tedious, but a lot better than going freehand I suppose.

    • @WardCo

I think the missing element is that you have to measure from POINT to POINT for scaling, not edge to edge.

There is one caveat though. When you resize an object inside the group or component, you're also resizing the scale of the measurements anything you created outside that group or component is out of scale and can no longer be used for the newly resized object. I just ran into this it kind of throws a wrench into entire model.

  • @LT72884

Haha, your article is exactly like a RUclips video i made a couple years ago on the proportionality theorem in geometry and trig. I have a degree in medical and areospace engineering and ratios/proportions i use constantly in sketchup. Especially with the scale tool. Knowin that 1.0 is 100%, and if i know i have 5'9", and i need to scale that down to 3 feet, use some algebra to find the percentage of reduction and then type that in as a decimal... or just use the tape measure method hahaha. Iij use both but for different applications. Usually i use scale tool to scale it by 1000%, use solid tools, then scale down by 0.001 to get back to original size. Sxaling up prevents tiny faces from being cut into the mesh.

  • @jimryan3960

This looked like my solution. But when I get to the last part, the resize model question it still resized the object to scale, not just the one dimension. So I had a 12"x6"x6" cube. I followed the instructions and put the mark on the 12" axis out to 15". After answering yes to the question I had a 15"x7.25"x7.25" cube. It does not seem possible to just stretch or shrink an object to a specific number without affecting the entire scale. I am using the free version (17.2.2555 64-bit) so maybe that's my problem.
