    For only having a few weeks to learn the whole set, Tony did a damn fine job. And to anyone that says otherwise, you should realize that he wasn't even using his own kit here. It was Slayer's kit. Tony was used to much smaller sizes and a smaller double bass set up in general. Try playing fast double bass on 24" bass drums when you've played 22" bass drums your entire life. Trust me, it's not as easy as you'd think.

    • @Vorgaloth
      @Vorgaloth 6 лет назад +11

      I hear ya. He did great. I have Dave's black Tama Artstar Custom kit with the extra deep toms and 24 kicks. I play a lot of death and black metal up to 230bpm and it's hard as fuck but I love the big power of the larger/deeper drums. I'll prob get 22" kicks soon though cuz I'm using triggers most of the time though it's a real kick drum wav file and sounds great. 22's are just easier to play on and can put the toms lower.

    I first saw Slayer around this time, though with Dave. I'd forgotten entirely about Tony. For only having a few weeks or so to master the songs, he did very well. His double bass fill for "Angel of Death" was respectable, just not as long as Dave's version. He struggles with the fast double bass elsewhere, but that was almost universal at the time. As a drummer for many decades, I'd say his work here was not bad at all. Dave was so unique, its almost impossible to imitate him entirely.

    • @Superelderscrollsman
      @Superelderscrollsman 5 лет назад +4

      Actually for the fill in Angel of Death, I'm pretty certain they swapped songs because as soon as the double bass fill is supposed to occur, it goes straight into Epidemic instead of finishing the rest of the song.

    I think Tony's work here is merely adequate, but this wasn't an easy gig to pull off for a drummer. It was clear Lombardo needed to be on the throne in these days. I heard Slayer asked Sacred Reich's Greg Hall to join. I also wonder why they didn't try to cherry pick Gene Hoglan from Dark Angel. I think Gene actually did some roadie work for Slayer at one time.
