My group loves Lewis & Clark with the setup tweak. It's neck and neck with dune imperium for us. It's so satisfying and the multi use cards work so well. It also scratches the racing itch. Love love love it!
In high-level play of Princes of Florence, I think the card draw is less of an issue than turn order. There's also the meta of what a piece is worth, especially jokers. That kind of defined good and bad play, something that people point to in Puerto Rico, was kind of what soured me on the game. I agree: I'd much rather play Colosseum! The negotiation in particular makes it a much more raucous, free-wheeling experience.
I have no other game quite like Lewis & Clark so that reason alone is enough to keep it. It has a combination of really interesting mechanics, good components, great artwork & a really immersive theme. All things considered, playing time is not an issue, we have tons of games that take a similar amount of time (2 hrs.). And once you get a few plays in, I'm sure the time to play would shrink accordingly. But every group is different so YMMV of course.
Thanks for reviewing Princes of Florence. It's been one I've been debating on whether to try or not. I am waiting for the new version, which seems to have better art anyway. I think they have also made it playable at 2 players. So, there might be other rules changes as well.
I've played Lewis & Clark multiple times and with varying player counts and it's never taken longer than 90 minutes to complete. I certainly wouldn't describe it as a 'long' game or one that overstays its welcome. Perhaps give it another go - with rules familiarity you're likely to get the play time right down.
I'm recovering from a 6 player game of Sidereal Confluence last night, so I'll keep my comment short n sweet. Love Princes of Florence, but boy is it drab on the eyes😮
As for Lewis & Clark. 1) Old version is the way to go 2) With 2-3 players it should NEVER exceed 90 minutes, everything beyond that playtime is absolutely unnatural
I don't know why you would play princes of Florence more than 2 times. There is no reason to change you valuation of the pieces game from game. By the third time I'll know that to win I should bid X for Y piece. It was the worst old game that is considered good I ever played.
Very nice reviews. I’m designing a couple of boardgames myself, and I’m always enjoying and take a lot of value watching reviews

What is or where can I find the setup tweak?

You may not like bad things happening to you when you do well, but that's what actually happened in ancient Rome.
I just don't like bad games
