i have several colors of dragonfly glaze, and you're right, though the holographic one works well on clear glass. i wouldnt paint dice with these. as it says on the bottle, its a glaze. not a pigment.

  • @ninethecat2212

So I picked up that dragonfly glaze for dice as well, but i ended up using it for other things. If you layer it up, it looks super glittery and it's iridescent, and it's super pretty over black. I think it's meant to be used as a subtle glaze, but i discovered layering it too quickly to use it that way. It's my new favorite special effect paint!

Hey, random idea for a use to all your excess resin. How about making tokens? You have a 3D printer, you could just take your dice goblin and put it into a reverse coin mold, that way you could pour your extra resin there and make it a "collector set" kind of thing, giving you not only a bonus item per set, but also it would be a good way of displaying the material.

Many times I don't place it correctly and I end up with an unnusable dice (I can use them for jewelry so no big deal but still). 😊

I've mixed those paints with others to make the base paint have the shimmers but I've over all found just doing separate coats works better. The Dragonfly glaze is an interference pigment, which means it has a brighter more pronounced flash on dark opaque surfaces. Dragonfly is meant to be a final overglaze, not an actual stand-alone paint. If you want a flashing paint that will show up in the numbers, I'd recommend ColorShift paint.

I sort of did something similar to this but instead of a galaxy style dice I made sort of a Evocation/Fireside dice with oranges and some ashes mixed into the resin. For one-off and testing molds I've found a thing called Composimold, which is a meltable, reusable mold material. It's not quite as durable as the Sorta-Clear, but it's still great for testing mold techniques. You just melt it in the microwave for 10 seconds and pour over, and the mold is ready as soon as it cools down, about 30 minutes. You should check it out, I recommend it to anyone just starting out and liable to mess up their first (or second, or fifth if you're me) try at moldmaking.

I the issue with the Dragonfly Glaze might be that its a glaze and not a paint (if the name of it is accurate?) From what I remember from a little bit of ceramics experience, glazes normally apply after drying when applied to a surface, and usually are used to add an additional hue of color to whatever is being applied rather than a flat coat (i.e., not supplanting the color it's put on, but adding to it). Maybe painting silver onto the galaxy dice numbers, and THEN painting the glaze on would look super cool? Who knows

These dice came out so gorgeous!! Has someone made an *out of this world* joke yet? Gives me definite *galaxy* brain watching your videos, they're so informative! I'm excited to fill my *space* up with dice materials and get started making my own sometime soon. I wonder what it would look like if you gave some galaxy dice a liquid glitter core, like a pink dice with blue or lilac inside for a sort of pastel galaxy feel? It'd make them the *star* of the show. Either way. I do also wonder if you should just be using the Dragonfly paint over top a matte color, I don't know if black would work but on top of violet it would kind of make it shine. Colors are super hard :x It's all *nova* to me!

I'd love to use them for when I get to play my Starfinder character, Hanakan Star Shaman Mystic, Wicket ( Yes, we're playing Pathfinder, in space... and I just wanted to play a magic, intelligent dinosaur).

Just a thought, the sprues with the knife marks almost look like a little tornado or something. Is it possible to make like spell effect platforms with resin? Like how would one make a mold for that? Something like an air or fire or just straight magic vortex that has a flat top you can pose minis on for a cool effect.

You MIGHT be able to, it depends on how you design the spell effect. The less arms or dangley bits the easier it will be :)

So, what you're saying is... I should not start trying to make dice for another year or so, and should just wait for you to test every method ever out and perfect them. Got it!

Those dice turned out great and the new molds look great. On the paint the Dragonfly Glaze is meant to go on top of other paint since it is a glaze.

Wow, this is kinda eerie. lol I'm currently working on a mold system very similar to this. I just bought a pen holder off aliexpress that's about the size of the solo cup, and it just arrived the other day and haven't had the chance to do this... but my thought was to use it to make a cylinder that I could use to make molds with by leaving off the bottom of the cup, so it's just a straight cylinder. This can be used by putting it on packing tape with hot glue, or using a reusable bottom that can be easily attached to the cylinder. This way you can just take off the tape or bottom and push the mold out. Also when you go to cast the dice, you slide the mold back into the cylinder so you don't need tape or what-have-you. This way you have a reusable and recastable mold housing that can be easily made to the size of the dice you are trying to cast and can save on silicone. In theory it should work exactly like the Dixie cup you used for this, but you don't need the extra inch or two of silicone on the bottom of the cup. On top of that, part of my plan was to use a d4 that I sanded a corner off of as a base I can attach to the master dice (similar to how you use the pipette) so have a reusable base that funnels in better than a toothpick.

If you're having trouble getting the molds in and out of the cups, powdering them can make it a lot easier. (either baby powder or powdered sugar works)

Dragonfly glaze is intended for use as a top coat over a base coat. versus the blue which is more of a base coat paint. Its not meant to be used as a standalone color. :)

For the clear glitter paint, my first thought was to ink the die with the blue ink, letting it dry (or not. Mixed might be cooler), and then painting on the clear paint

That dragonfly paint if I remember correctly is more of a glaze/sealer for the paint. I ended up using that and some citadel paint for one of my dice sets

For future reference the dragonfly glaze all the glitter sits at the bottom so you actually have to tip the bottle upside down and then shake it. But it just smells like a white glue with glitter tbh. These are still pretty

  • @ambsquared

You could use a golf tee instead of cutting up a pipette. The top will give you a funnel shape and you can cut it to size pretty easy.

I find the dragonfly glaze is best applied with a makeup sponge or melamine foam (magic eraser stuff) as it soaks up a lot of the medium but still applies the glitter, you definitely want to put it on over black :) not sure that helps with the inking but you might find some other cool use for it.

I love space dice and these are beautiful.
I'd be interested in seeing you make a video comparing dice making with vs without a pressure pot. In some videos I know you've said they aren't a requirement, they just eliminate bubbles and lower the risk of your dice messing up, so I think it'd be interesting to see how the methods differ and the success rate of not using a pressure pot.

Seriously great video again, I'll probably try that method for molds next time, looks relatively easy. And I absolutely love the paint line from that sapphire blue. I got a kit with 8 different metallic colors from them and I absolutely love them. The emerald one is actually really great.

I think for that galactic look, I'd have gone for orange rather than blue on the flakes. The burning orange of solar light would make for a certainly galactic of nebulaic look. Blue's good too, it adds an element of mystery, though I think orange might have better accentuated the cosmic starry field aspect.
