  • On December 23, 2020, officers responded to a reported active shooter inside a Sevierville, Tennessee, Walmart. Luckily, no shots were actually fired and no one was hurt. But this body camera video shows the intense response by officers as they cleared the store and looked for a possible shooter. You also see them getting people to safety, including children who were barricaded behind boxes inside the store.

    Man.. It's the small details that make this heartbreaking. The abandoned shopping carts still standing where people were when they bolted. The people hiding in the toy-section and behind that shutter. That innocent, confused question if she can bring her purse or not. And most of all the officer taking a few seconds to quickly text his concerned family and loved ones that he's ok.

    For those that do not know this was the result of two guys that got into a fight and ended up drawing guns on each other.
    People obviously panicked and began hiding or fleeing. 911 became inundated with calls which always causes a breakdown in police or 911 operators having accurate information.
    Shortly after police arrived someone reviewed security footage and was able to relay information to some of the officers outside which helped them to identify the men.

    This highlights something ive been saying for years working for Walmart: Departments and Medical units have NO IDEA how to clear a supercenter. Weve been asking for the oppertunity to help train them for a very long time, but corperate refuses. Every police department in every city with a WalMart should have detailed floorplans and SOPs in place. Blindly going into that kind of situation would be like walking into hell.

    • @glennkonklin2926
      @glennkonklin2926 2 года назад +38

      I've worked in retail for 20 years and frankly, I was more interested in how the back room was laid out. I laughed when that officer looked down the stockroom and said, 'Aw... Jesus '. But I agree. Don't they have posted layouts throughout the store?

    • @TheSamuraiPigeon
      @TheSamuraiPigeon 2 года назад +34

      @@glennkonklin2926 They do but the main issue we've found is layouts for the non-customer areas aren't anywhere. Not to mention employees have their go to places, they know where the best hiding places, secure areas, and fast egress points are, but responders have no clue usually. The back room in the video for example, every section of steel and racking back there has the potential for someone to be either hiding there, or waiting in ambush. Large retail spaces are often overlooked for emergency planning. I know some places are proactive with it but in most cases the store has it's protocall, the police has theirs, and very rarely if ever do they actually have a conversation about it. I mean hell, ask any member of management how many employees are on shift and they have no clue. Emergency services asks if everyone is out and all they can do is shrug. Local services NEEDS to train along side these massive retail chains.

    • @johnmarine44
      @johnmarine44 2 года назад +3

      They DO know how to clear centers, store maps are useless, you clear every room the same tactics don't change just because its a walmart or a walgreens or any other store. Also they do train in shopping malls often, just depends on the department.

    • @TheSamuraiPigeon
      @TheSamuraiPigeon 2 года назад +8

      @@glennkonklin2926 for the front areas yes, some stores have the back maps as well for emergency fire or natural disaster evacs for the employees, but those are usually posted in the training or break areas, in the back. I was more eluding to the idea that local emergency services at least walkthrough their local retail stores from time to time, as well as meeting with management. In a situation like the one here, the more information law enforcement has the better the outcome will be.

    • @GoldGlov3
      @GoldGlov3 2 года назад +9

      Being a municipal cop, I completely agree. Essentially all of our active shooter training is tailored to schools/office buildings. Our department has done zero training in super market settings. Completely different layouts physically which generates different responses tactically. Something our department has recognized but failed to implement into the training unfortunately.

    This was very hectic. Having to clear a building the size of a Walmart supercenter with only a small number of officers had to be extremely stressful. It was nice to see the protection and extraction of the trapped shoppers and employees caught on film. Unreal how much chaos was created by two violent idiots that couldn't wait to resort to their guns to solve what was undoubtedly a ridiculously stupid minor altercation. The real tragedy is that the courts are probably going to just slap their wrists and they won't learn a god damned thing from this.
