    The concrete barriers on a classic muscle car course was a brilliant idea.

      I mean putting land yachts on a handling course from the start is kind of whack, might as well have a competition drag racing miata's.

      @RicketyRocket Год назад +2

      Any muscle car is subject to spin out when you're trying to make a sharp turn. I'n my opinion..just go ahead and hay bale that inside turn to give the drivers a little bit more peace of mind coming into that danger zone.

    • @pongespob
      @pongespob Год назад +4

      Possibly whoever was putting on this event couldn't afford hay bales or tires as padding to the concrete? I wouldn't run a classic on a course like this with nothing but concrete to run into.

    • @kennethsouthard6042
      @kennethsouthard6042 Месяц назад +1

      There could easily be a boatload of hidden damage here than you can't see from a distance. That barrier got hit pretty hard and moved a few feet. In addition to the left fender and front bumper, you could have the grille, radiator support, headlight bezel, headlight support, hood, bumper brackets, front valance. I'm not saying all this stuff is damaged or could not be bumped out, but it's not cheap to fix or easy to come by. A reproduction fender is easy, but finding the bumper is going to be a challenge. I'm no Chevelle expert, but there were a lot less Chevelles made than Malibus, and I'm not sure which of those front-end parts are Chevelle specific vs. shared.
      If you are replacing factory sheet metal with aftermarket Chinese reproduction, you will definitely take a hit in value for that. The fitment on those reproduction parts can be hit or miss too.

      @@farmerj1 Yes you are right. I was horsing around in our High School gravel lot 79/80. And found that when I did just that. I got those results. In 96 as part of my OTR Truck driver training with Schneider we had the only Real Skid Pad (Instructor had a device to put you into a skid) of any Driver training facility. And the biggest thing they taught was. As soon as you loose traction push in the Clutch. then off the accelerator or brake. To get the "Rolling Traction" back. As a Skidding wheel will always want to lead. rather from locked or spinning. That and steer to where you want to go to. Not so much into or out of ... They'd say head to the green triangle, put us in a skid. And tell us steer for the "orange" one... Worked for Bobcat and with the trailer. Saved my ass more than once in 16 years...Doing a refresher one day some new hire with verified 25 years experience who kept saying 25 years of being on the real skid pad (road) failed and wasn't hired. As he wouldn't listen. While 2 week drivers were pulling out of the skids...Damn this is long. LOL

I attend autox events since a couple of my club members run them weekly ina league. i see plenty of classic cars built and run amazing numbers in autox. they dont handle like a gutted miata on coils but they can boogy. sucks that bad call on trying to save it on the finish line but hey.. if a miata did it that car probably would be towed home instead of driving away like the chevelle.

It's not all that bad. I'm sure the paint job may cost a bit, but it's black so it's not like matching the paint would be hard. I bet he could spend maybe $1k and fix it with painting the fender and all

    First of all, never give that much power while still in the turn. He could easily of saved it by powering it through, or let the car slide on its own, not over steering like he did because once the car gets traction, its going which ever way your steering it towards. I would rather hit the cones than the barrier.

    People better start making up their minds…Do you want a Race Course car? Or a Muscle Car?…Stop trying to have one car that does both. Muscle cars are not meant for this type of crap. Leave that to the foreign cars and the rice burners. Dropping the height and putting big ass wheels with salami skin tires is ridiculous. Grow up already. You're killing the image of these classic beauties.

      salvatore bartolomeo These older (60's/early 70s) car do handle like crap...in stock form. But many of these "pro-touring" modified muscle cars use 4 link suspension in the rear. They can handle just as well, and even much better, than newer (2010+) Mustang and Camaros. I've seen an early 70s Trans Am with better lap times than the new 707HP 2015 Hellcat.

      salvatore bartolomeo That's what I'm saying.... I'm not surprised that clown wrecked his classic Chevelle. You could tell that he had a low IQ by putting those ghetto rims and skinny tires on that car. (Shake my head)

    • @78tranzamman43
      @78tranzamman43 9 лет назад +1

      Richard Williams If he used original tires, his car would have wrecked even worse. The technology in the rubber back then was horrible. No grip at all! And the low profile tires (if that is what you mean by "Skinny") has much less sidewall flex to help out in cornering. Besides, they are not ridiculously low profiles at all by today's standards. And those Torque style rims are not at all ghetto. They are very much period style correct and the most common style seen on muscle cars. The driver made a major mistake in his driving skills, but definitely doesn't have a low IQ by using those wheels/rims. Actually shows he has some smarts.

    • @richardwilliams2628
      @richardwilliams2628 9 лет назад

      The point is that these Chevelle's are supposed to be used for *drag strips or straight line street racing, not as course cars with lots of corners*. The 17-18 inch American Racing Torque Thrust rims and low pro tires belong on newer cars such as 1993-2000 Camaro's and Firebirds/Trans Ams because they have better handling. 1960's and 1970's Chevelle's look and perform better with the dragster or "Pro Street" look. In other words they perform better with the 15 inch rims and large/wide rear tires with pizza cutter tires in the front. The combination of the high performance motor, the large body style and low pro tires caused the driver to lose control of the Chevelle in this video and fish tail which led to the crash. They now sell wide rear drag tires with tred which prevent fish tailing.

    It’s there to protect the photographers and spectators. He wrecked on a short straightaway because he got on the gas too soon on a wet track. I suppose that the giant concrete base for the parking lot light was in a bad place as well? He almost hit that instead of the relatively soft jersey barrier that slid away after the car hit it. He got away with minor damage compared to if he hit the light post base which would have folded that Chevelle up like a taco shell.

    That's like trying to steeplechase a Clydesdale. Those cars aren't meant for corners. And those poor little rubber band tires are almost peeling off the rims on the corners. He'd almost be better off with stock tires, or certainly with more vintage sizes meant for that much weight.
    Another advantage of more modern cars is with the plastic bumpers, you can smash everything under the cover in a crash like that and if the paint holds out and bumper pops back, nobody will know, lol. It's gonna be a lot of work to fix that Chevelle back up.

      2 door 68 Chevelles can vary by over 500#'s just in how they are equipped, with anywhere from 53-56% of overall weight on the front wheels alone.
      But your 300 comment reminded me of a time when a, I believe it was a Charger, tried to keep up to my friends old non-turbo 300. It was a straight street with about a 45° elbow in it with concrete sides. My friend zipped through the corner then heard these loud crash sounds. He checked his mirrors and saw the guy bouncing his car off the concrete sides, lol.
      Muscle cars aren't made for corners.

    • @ralphinator2
      @ralphinator2 9 лет назад +1

      l337pwnage Not from the factory, but they can be modded with shocks, sway bars, and everything else you might think of. I have a Dodge Dart with a complete suspension package from PST and Mopar. It has poly bushes, big sway bars, kevlar brake pads, lowered 3 inches, camber kit, steel braided brake hoses, big brake kit, KYB shocks, autocross springs, Borbet alloy wheels, and V-rated Michelin Pilot tires. You would be very surprised how well it handles. And it only weighs 3400 pounds. That's a thousand pounds less than a BMW M5.

    • @l337pwnage
      @l337pwnage 9 лет назад

      ralphinator2 Well, darn near anything can be made fast if that is your goal. People even race Civics, although they'd be hard pressed to get them UP to that "light weight" of 3400 pounds, lol. The new ones are getting up to 3K stock, so maybe someday.
      One of hardest things to modify is weight distribution, tho, unless you make it heavier. I have known of people relocating suspension points and motor mounts, then you might be able to make one heck of a well handling sleeper, but that is a lot of work and you really have to know what you are doing.
      M5? Why not just use the Veyron as your example, those are fat pigs also.
