  • This is a video on our search for our perfect loop boat. We never thought the search would be so exhausting and go to so many states. We also didn’t expect to be disappointed multiple times with the boats we looked at. But our search for the perfect boat finally paid off and our Maiden Voyage warning! They said do NOT cross Lake Michigan today but we did anyway! Say hello to TrEd Water!

Yeah, the water is cold. Even in summer you can get hypothermia. The waves are different it seems on the Great Lakes. It's probably just perception, but they seem closer together than the ocean when the wind gets up. Not big rollers, but tight frequency nut thumpers.

Did 3 tours in the Great Lakes. Small boat station, Icebreaker (140ft) and our HQ in Cleveland. I've also been on two different 210's out of Florida and experienced a hurricane on both (81 and 98). I rather ride out a hurricane at sea then deal with the confused seas on the lakes any day. Even on a ship designed for heavy seas, pulling out of the Sturgeon Bay ship canal into Lake Michigan while there's a winter storm flowing from the south, makes riding out a hurricane seem like spring storm. Unless you are 100% sure you can make it across before the weather turns bad, best to just stay at the pier. I've spent days/weeks out at sea looking for those to took the chance, and failed. Always file a FLOAT PLAN and make sure your EPIRB/PLB is operational. Fair winds and following seas.. 73's

Congratulations on your new boat. However, very unwise to take the boat across the lake! If you said you checked the weather reports yourself and based on the pattern, you saw it differently, that is ok with me. I have been going out on the Lake for over 50 years, in all conditions. It's much different than the ocean. Obviously many of the people commenting are not familar with lake Michigan. Yes, 5ft waves are ok, but when you are dealing with wave interference, it's a whole different ball game.

On a 6 hour excursion, that’s 600 gallons of fuel at $4.50+/- per gallon….that’s about $2,700 to go out to lunch and back. Do that 4X a month and it’ll be better than $10 grand. For some…no worries.

Although it was not completely ignored I did spend time after receiving it studying the weather ahead of us and made the decision to press on after not seeing anything too alarming given our time frame. Of course should something have happened on the water which slowed us down then it would have been 100% a foolhardy choice. Luckily that did not occur and the lake only began to “wake up” as we arrived at port.

One piece of equipment that I would recommend getting is a set of two-way headsets. They aren’t called “marriage savers” for nothing. Also I would strongly suggest that anybody walking on the deck while getting on or off the dock wear a floatation device. In the locks, you will find that it’s a requirement. So get in the habit now. Also, you were lucky on this trip. That boat has a shallow draft and would be thrown all over the place in really rough seas. Inexperienced boat owners who ignore weather forecasts are frankly stupid. Also, your first long trip with a bad weather forecast, and not one of you had a life vest on...

Anybody that hasn't boated on Lake Michigan has no idea...it's the most dangerous lake in the United States for boating and swimming. It's shores run parallel, causing unique wave shapes. The confused shapes of these waves combined with high windage make boating treacherous and contribute to rip tides, one of the most dangerous and deadly things swimmers can encounter.

The Armistice Days storm of 1940 produced 40ft waves. I didnt think my son and I would spend over 3 hours in the museum, but we read and learned everything we could. It had my 11 year old son interested that long so.... Only 5 minutes into your video but you apparently made the trip. Beautiful boat. That boat can handle quite a bit on Lake Michigan or Superior, but if you fail to respect those waters, they will kill you dead in a big hurry. I've spent some time working in the Carribean and on Lake Superior when I was younger. I was taught and learned to respect those waters. We were out on Superior collecting Lake Trout samples (WI DNR) when a pretty good gale got up, we were in a 65 foot boat in 10-12 footers (Small craft warning was issued). We barely made it back, I thought we were goners. THAT was a harsh lesson! A fishing friend of mine used to go out of Milwaukee with his bass boat and fish salmon over there. Well, he never hit any real wind over there and got overconfident....he was out there this summer with his longtime girlfriend and good buddy fishing Salmon and the wind got up...bass boats are NOT made for that water! My friend and his girlfriend were both pretty overweight and certainly not fit, neither were wearing life jackets, his buddy on there with them was. Wind got up, waves got big...boat swamped. My friend and his girlfriend both perished, their friend that had a life jacket barely survived with his life, even he needed resuscitation when the coast guard got to him. He was fortunate they got an emergency call out. They failed to respect that big water and paid with their lives. God bless you Brian the "big guy". Super nice both of them, a senseless loss.
