Larry never fails to spread the praise around. He’s not a limelight hogger (like some who shall remain nameless *cough* MJ *cough* ) and he even seems a little uncomfortable at times…but he understands his duty to the institution that inspired him and to the future athletes who will follow him so he puts aside his shyness & puts the fans FIRST. To my mind there isn’t anything about Larry that isn’t worthy of the highest praise. I just LOVE Larry Legend.
Was it Larry or someone talking about Larry when it was said he would rather get an F then speak in front of the class but he got on a basketball court and was just comfortable. The shyness and anxiety I think for Larry, on the court went away.
@KenD67I like both of your stories, I have a few similar memories that always make me feel good when I think of them, baseball/sports are so good for us I think. I learned lessons from Little League coaches that have stuck with me my entire life, learned one from a Babe Ruth coach that has stuck with me as well. That one isn't so good but it's stuck with me. My dad was constantly moving us, by the time I was in eighth grade I was at my eighth school district an tenth different school change, it sucked always having to leave friends an worry about how I'd be received at a new place. After doing it so many times I got pretty good at fitting in though, still can to this day. Anyway, on one of those moves I got to Hood River Oregon too late for Babe Ruth sign up, but there was one team that had a kid leaving halfway through the season. 12 or 14 game season an he was leaving literally at the halfway point. Every team played every other team twice, so there was 7 or 8 teams I guess. I showed up for every practice an every game, during the games I couldn't be in the dugout though cause I wasn't on the team yet so I'd stand beside it an talk to the guys through the fencing. They lost every damn game, I remember a kid asking me "you sure you want to be on this team"? An I answered honestly "yeah man, I just want to play". So they went 0-6 or 0-7, whatever it was, an I finally got to play. Played in right field for two innings, don't remember if I got an at bat or not. But we won. Then like the second or third game with them I'm in the dugout with the backup catcher an he asks if I'll throw him some pitches. So I did. He wound up telling coach "this guy is pretty good". Next game we were playing the other really bad team in the league, their only win was against us the first time around. I got to pitch 3 or 4 innings. Anyway, we wound up winning every game of the second half, every game after I got on the team. Wound up being league champions, the team we beat only had one loss going into the championship game an that was against us the second go around. An we beat them again. So we got to send two teams to Hermiston Oregon as all star teams. Both coaching staffs from the championship game got to coach a team. My coach picked me to be on the team, I can't tell you how happy that made me. Looking back I realize I was just a lucky charm, his whole season turned around once I came on board. I was good but not great. Anyway, just before we were about to have our first game he pulled me aside an said "you're not going to be starting but you're our star". I was 13 an believed him, I thought since I was the star things would be easy for me. I totally lost focus an the two times I got in the game I didn't make it out of the inning. Only two games we lost. Him telling me that made me lose my focus, it's not his fault he was just worried I'd be upset to be coming off the bench. He didn't know how proud I was just to be chosen, I fully should have been coming off the bench as a reliever, I only had one start with that team he didn't know how I'd do as a regular starter. Moral of the story, careful what you tell people. He had the best intentions but it totally screwed my focus, before he said that I was in fight mode. 100% ready to compete, he told me I was the star an I thought it would be easy. I'm not even sure I got a single out........ There's other better lessons I learned of course but that was a good one. Never let anything get in the way of your focus an never believe hype. Stay focused.
@36:48 Jackie sets up the story about the New Mexico State game….and I realize HEY! That’s the game Coach Nolan Richardson was talking about in his HOF induction speech! “All of a sudden, this name keeps popping up: BIRD! he scores to the left! BIRD! He goes to the right …& I’m thinking Goddam! Who’s Bird?!?!” 😂😂😂😂
Said it b4. But he's a conundrum. Quiet yet confrontational. Modest yet cocky. Simple yet very intelligent. Slow yet quick. Shy yet the center of his world. And on and on
I think a lot of us seen a clip from this with Walton trying to steal the show. I've never seen the whole thing until now. Thanks for putting this here for us to see. Larry Legend will live on forever. Imagine that. 100 years from now if we lived that long, It'd still seem like yesterday.
there is a video going around where Larry comes into the [i think it is the Pacers] practice at age 60 and shooting 10 3's in a row and then just sitting down and letting the players think on that awhile still shooting 3's at age 60 what can you say it is Larry Bird
Thank you for this 🙂 It was fun watching it with you. It's interesting, I think, how Bird still doesn't really enjoy the spotlight on himself but, I guess the word would be _endures_ it because of the good it can bring to others. For example the scholarship fund there in Terre Haute, the tourist dollars etc to French Lick. But also recognizing that, despite his reclusiveness, he has touched people's lives and they feel better for being able to express their appreciation. Love how he says it was the TEAM that won those 33 games 👍
52:20 Its kinda insane to look at Bird and imagine he was actually a brawler... Getting into bar fight on the regular, never backin down... When this guy says "I needed you to roll with me on that" it sounds like a joke but it was probably very true.

I watched a video I can’t remember who they were playing but before the game two guys walking thinking they were headed to the bathroom but walked into the Celtics locker room. Now these were the other teams fans. When they walked in Bird said hey come on in guys !! Offered them a beer, and food, introduced these to guys to the team. When head coach Casey Jones walked in and Bird said “Hey coach these are two l old buddies of mine. That was classic Larry Bird!! Great video!! Thank you! B
In the 1979 NBA draft, Michigan State had two players out of the top 4 picks. And another player drafted the next year. Larry had no help. Larry's team only ever had Larry and Carl Nicks who played an unremarkable 3 years before he washed out.

I think your great and love your pod cast , it I also believe when your from a little town and you make an association with people it never ends and if Bird commits to you it never goes away . And believe me Majic was from the same mold . Put it this way , Bird still has no use for Bill Lambier Why ? Cause he was an asshole on the court
The knuckle of Bird's index finger was shattered in that softball game in the spring / summer of 1979. Required surgery. Before he was signed with the Celtics.
@@cindyknudson2715 Thanks for thee info. What about MJ and Magic? Their forefingers look almost as crooked. I think these could be repetition injuries of sorts when you shoot thousands of shots where the ball rolls off the fingers. MIne is marginally crooked but my teammates from college days who played a lot more than I did has a far more crooked forefinger.
@@anwarsadat6825 Interesting. I haven't ever really looked at their hands. I have noticed that there are quite a few players that have damaged pinkies similar to Bird's, also has on that hand. Bird's index finger was severely damaged in that softball game. Bird is fabulous at adapting. Of finding a way to overcome or build a "flaw" into an asset. 🙂. Rising to the challenge.

And I’m getting to all the Kobe stuff next week But got to stock up on tissues and I’ll have meds after my surgeries anyways lol BUT I ❤ RAP & BASKETBALL kinda go hand in hand for me with horses and cars or trucks too lol
Heather wassap?!? Sooo no! The song im talking about is hip hop song called “that aint love” by a group called Little Brother. They are traditional real hip hop, speaking that truth! Like a Talib Kweli, Mos Def, or Lupe Fiasco! You would probably love the song!!
Thank you as always for your amazing words you always make me smile!😃 Hey I will do the things most wont because as a consumer I know I like going to one video to get my fix lol. Thanks for the unrelenting support! You da bomb! Whos your favorite hip hop artist btw? Get well soon!
@@BU_TV I’ll be back to comment and I don’t know HOW I MISSED IT IF IT HAS ALL THEM IN IT!!!! But sometimes stuff can slip through if you are focused on other artists and since ALL OF AL SUDDEN THE GREATS ARE DROPPING AGAIN AND OGs well........ this loyal dog has been on certain ones AND ALOT OF INTERVIEWS (don’t know if you like Eminem or not) but know you must respect him since you 1st asked about G-UNIT FANS AND TONY and we KNOW how “Get Rich Or Die Tryin” started...... And all this with his albums WHAT HE DID FOR HIS SPEECH AT THE HALL OF FAME!!!!!!!! Anyways I just meant I’m wrapped up following 50 since he moved to Houston (My Brother lives there and has been there for awhile he works for Halliburton) ANYWAYS that interview when 50 said he’s about to drop a new 8 Mile SERIES .......AND WELL WE ALREADY SEE WHAT HE DID WITH HIS 1st Mill so he’s going to beat out some of these others before it’s over with worth!!!! But the fact Eminem would NOT do the Super Bowl WO his cameo AND HE DROPPED IN ON MY #1 song on my playlist and drives my husband crazy how much I crank our bass up in our rides (and he was in the Amp world he designed the Linear Amp and dude screwed him on the patent) THE BUSINESS I KNIW I USE TO BE IN IT HEAVY!!!!! Judging bass competitions, worked for Peavey Electronics in Engineering and Design, and my car shows. I’ve lived a full and crazy life too lol. I don’t usually pull connection cards BUT if I wanted to could in a lot of circles. Missed out on some I regret too but maybe God knew I didn’t need t9 be there is how I look at it now ok......back to this OH M GEE AND I WILL LISTEN TO THAT SONG ASAP!!!!!! Thank you!!!!!!! And thanks for how long you do ALL your videos and take notes or remember things THATS THE CHANNELS I RESPECT & love. If I JUST wanted a head bob I would watch the original with my husbands reactions and since he doesn’t say much on music I would stop and say bar bar bar sorry I’m on one this am lol.....couldn’t sleep. And I will be ok just MAJOR DENTAL SUCKS & I’ve dealt with a lifetime. That lovely shutdown we had back ummmm well you know kept me from dentist And a lot of doctors except my neurologist etc. so things got worse that weren’t AS bad...but this has been coming.....just kept running into complications (including me almost having to shoot it get shot outside my original oral surgeon’s office will tell you later but yep I’m from Jackson. Just live outside of it now but just as bad here because it’s a Tri County problem well WORLD PROBLEM SORRY BUT COULD ALWAYS BE WORSE......I COULD not know how to defend myself.....scared them and it was 4 KIDS ALL PROBABLY 8-12 yrs on bikes I know you know....but I LEARNED YEARS AGO like Denzel about “Little Yummies” I’m City & Country 😉😉😉😉😉 and NEVER UNDERESTIMATE YOUR OPPONENT & head ALWAYS on a swivel...the horses and race ones at that my ENTIRE life taught me THAT then add clubbing lol. I think I could talk to you a lot. Not AT ALL MEANING IN A BAD WAY YOU FEEL LIKE FAMILY ALREADY!!!! Thanks again for the time you put in and your comments back. I don’t always get this opportunity to write this much and I probably need to go back and edit and proof read some. I type too fast and my stuff locks up and well you know what I do so it’s USUALLY CRAZY when I’m watching or weather sucks and my fingers freeze too lol
@@BU_TV oh and FAVORITE hmmmmm I will be back with my GOATS but I like how some OGs say it kinda needs to be “mood” decades or eras (like sports) I tend to surprise people kinda like Eminem did when he said 2 Live Crew 1st even though it was alphabetical...... I was like OH M GEE didn’t think as much as I have listened to him ANYTHING could throw me off THAT much BUT REGARDLESS HE KNOWS ALL HIP HOP EVEN IF HE DOESNT ALWAYS LIKE IT SO FAVORITES I’m going to have to come back BECAUSE kinda like your recent top 10 I have some BUT want to say why on a few. But hmmmmmm I started out (since I told you I loved clubbing for dance) BUT I AM BIG ON LYRICAL BECAUSE I LOVE READING KNOWLEDGE ENGLISH LANGUAGE OTHERS ETC.... KIND AWHY WE LIKE THE SAME FOLKS SO FAR..... I like fun stuff but depth too but it’s hard....I am a HUGE LL COOL J, ICE T, ICE CUBE, JAY-Z Uncle Luke Nelly, oh m gee Leaving out my man and friend Ludacris BUT IF I AM RIDING by myself it’s all Eminem’s bangers off last few albums, 50 & GUnit, Nelly (Country Grammer is in the chamber in my truck 2500 right now and I THINK Ludacis and a mix tape with all the early 2000’s greats is in my Camero (they are older & not swapped out everything) my 2002 Navigator was LOADED & a lady wrecked me bad broke my heart and then my 2005 Eddie Bauer Expedition was set up close and it just died and long story but didn’t get the set up out before it “disappeared” I’ve been sick and working too much and just got a 2018 GMC YUKON DENALI 6.2 and it’s got a pretty good system BUT my husband said he WILL let me set it up back how I want to lol sooooo but my house is “Club Townsend” just temporarily closed (I can’t enjoy it lol) my problem is I love so many for ALOT OF REASONS SO MY MIXTAPE collection well CDs now is nice. I use to have a friend and stepson who downloaded sooooooo much and I have tons of originals that rock........kinda like Eminem digging in crates lol.....(if you’ve watched his interviews the last 5 or so years) I miss SlaughterHouse too!!!!! Oh yeah YELAWOLF IS WHO I’ve been rocking out to recently. I’ll pm you some I know personally or a few stories just that I can tell but I won’t on here. Not bad just “names”....
I like you a lot. Respect all your opinions.😊
Thank you! 😃 i do say crazy stuff sometimes lol
The guy on the far right is a little too sensitive, IMO. No one should be surprised that Walton is capable of hogging the mike time!
By now shouldn't that read "Bird fan reacts to Larry Bird"?
RIP Bill Walton
Walton's dead? Sorry, I live a sheltered life
He is not dead!!
@@andybilakshow260 He isn’t dead.
He’s not dead.
@@carolynclaire5241 Thank you. Thank goodness.
TO: Anwar Sadat? And like Bill Walton!
Is this a really old interview?
Or has Jackie aged incredibly well?
She should be in her 60s now, right?
From 2013
Hey brother can you turn the volume up on that video you can't hardly hear it
That Carl fellow looks 40. Just saying ...
Walton is still a brain cell short.
Use the ladies room 😂
Still got trash talkin game down.
His finger got that way from shooting. Check out Magic's finger, similar. Michael Jordan too! Not as bad as Larry's but still crooked.
No. That finger was hurt when Larry played a softball game against his brother during college. He hadn’t even signed with the Celtics.
I'm not getting any audio from intro to end.
It is fine for me.
@@marykuettner752 how bizarre. I tried using 3 different devices and no audio..weird.
Bill Walton does speak a little too much. He needs to give the host a chance to speak. Completely oblivious to human sentiments!
it was the whiskey doing the talking
P ex z
Larry’s BY FAR!!!! THE MOST LOYAL BASKETBALL PLAYER EVER TO PLAY
I’m from Boston and don’t know how Larry got his number
Larry AINT SHIT BUT ANOTHER MAN THAT BLEEDS RED. AND I DARE YOU TO TRY AND TELL HIM DIFFERENT
Ironically, Larry would agree with you. He said he never could understand why people wanted his autograph.
