My female REFUSES to use her lay box. She is great at hiding her eggs in her bioactive enclosure and it makes it super difficult for me haha She actively avoids the lay box and has even laid UNDER it twice now. This season she even managed to completely hide 2 eggs from me, I never ever found them despite checking multiple times (like getting the eggs she laid a month later, etc) and they hatched in the enclosure! Boy was I surprised when I went to check on her and there was just a baby chilling on the ground! After a bit of searching I found the sibling and both are doing great now! It was a fun first year of breeding for me, I can't wait to start again next season! Still wishing you good luck on 1k! :D
Entered! I don’t even try with a lay box in bio active! They like to lay near the roots or under wood for protection! Maybe you can train her to just lay under the lay box? Haha!
@@NickHowellElectricgeckos Man, that would be nice but she chooses a different spot almost every time haha I never even found the egg shells from the mystery babies! She hid those ones GOOD and I basically gutted as much of the tank as I could to attempt to find them! Tricky geckos!
I'm planning on getting into breeding crested geckos in the future when I have a better place, and this series has been SUPER helpful. I learn so much better from videos than long forum paragraphs, you are very good at explaining these things :). I have a question that I'm not sure you've answered before but I apologize if you have, how do you keep track of your geckos for breeding and otherwise? Do you use codes for babies and how do you decide what they are and mean? What do you use to keep track of their weights, children, parents, etc? (I was thinking a word document or spreadsheet for myself lol) I've seen breeders even use codes for tanks, different morphs, and on lay boxes. I'd love to made my own coding system instead of copying another breeder's and would love feedback on what you do! Stay awesome, man
My female started laying eggs at the age of 8 and every year since then around about June I find her buried under the substrate head first for 2 nights then ass first for 1 day to lay the eggs in her little hole in the ground, she will do this once a month up until October ... she's only one of 2 female cresties I own and both have their own tank and have never met
Awesome video and great information, thank you! I don't know if you're in the market for ideas for future videos, but I'd love to know when you recommend starting to pair geckos for a breeding season, as well as what weight males and females should be in relation to each other for successful breeding (for example, how much should a male weigh to be paired with a 60 g female). 1k
Always open to ideas! I have a video coming up on that soon! I’m also going to do a walkthrough on my breeding season! Just to kinda show my thought process and how I do things!
Another great video ! Some solid information! I have a yellow male created gecko. I saw a black female that I really like. If I breed a yellow male to a black female, what color will be the babies? Or this is a bad idea, I better stick with yellow to yellow, dark to dark ? Thank you Nick.
If you can, Yellow to yellow, dark to dark! They could for sure have beautiful babies! In some of my projects the colors don’t really make sense but I always make sure their morphs line up!
Hi, I have one question. Should gekos mate once per year or should I introduce male every month or so (period after femal layes 2 eggs and has enough weight again)?
@@NickHowellElectricgeckos sweet, thanks man! but do I need a lay box still or is that substrate fine? I have places they can go behind and dig etc. But no specific "box"
@@NickHowellElectricgeckos i already have a fully set up enclosure with reptibark and soil in the substrate but i dont have a gecko yet, should i maybe get a male so that the gecko doesnt dig around and accidentaly ingest any substrate?
Yes that’s an earlier layer for sure! It still doesn’t mean she’s ready to breed! If you plan on breeding wait till 45! Offer her some dusted crickets!
@@NickHowellElectricgeckos yes I’m planning to breed when she’s 40 to 45 grams, I’m also buying a male roughly the same size as her. So when they are both older they will be ready to breed.
1k! Is it normal that your 40g female is sparatic and never been breed? We adopted her September 2, 2020 from a breeder downsizing. Then Halloween we noticed 2 eggs and nothing since. She did dip in weight when she laid but now she is at her heaviest.
Of course! I would get her come dusted crickets and try to get her to 50 though! Just to be safe for egg production! She may lay every month or just randomly!

You can always freeze the eggs if you aren’t ready for babies. Finding homes isn’t very easy. Just separate and when the females lay freeze the eggs! Also make sure you are weighing her, laying can be tough on the body!

do you need to feed them a special diet if you notice that they are laying eggs? like a special formula or could you just feed more crickets?
More dusted crickets!
Can i Leave the eggs in the Lay box and move the parents to a new enclosure?
Hello👋
Question
So when a female has lays infertile eggs(has never been with a male) when would be a good time to introduce her to a male?
Any time would be fine! We are about to start the breeding season so if you paired her now and again next month you should be good to go!
@@NickHowellElectricgeckos awesome. Thank you so much 🤗
My female is now 37g and she digs and hides in her substrate, but I check for eggs often and there hasn’t been any.
Wow! I love that girl! She may not lay!
You can expect what your expecting so you know more then someone who doesn't expect to know what their expecting...what?!!!!! 😂😂😂😂
how about if the substrate is reptisoil, bark and spagmoss?
I’d ditch the bark! Reptisoil is great, spagg moss is awesome, bark can’t be passed as easily if ingested! You could also use some leave litter!
@@NickHowellElectricgeckos sweet, thanks man! but do I need a lay box still or is that substrate fine? I have places they can go behind and dig etc. But no specific "box"
Substrate is fine! They typically won’t use a lay box if the tank already has substrate! If you plan on planting she may lay near roots of the plants!
@@NickHowellElectricgeckos i already have a fully set up enclosure with reptibark and soil in the substrate but i dont have a gecko yet, should i maybe get a male so that the gecko doesnt dig around and accidentaly ingest any substrate?
Word of today expected...expecting .... :)
Haha yes!
If they have a lump near the tail is it eggs I see a lump ?😉🤔🤔🤔
So I found out my crestie was a female. Layed an egg the other night and I was so shocked. My gecko is at 25 grams. Also provided a lay box

Do female cresties lay eggs if they did not breed? Do I still need a lay box for her if I'm not planning to breed her?
I would! Some do and some don’t!
I’m breeding mine she layed September 17 should they be hatching soon ? 1k
I would not breed them during the cooling down season! Breeding season is February through October!

wierd question but do female geckos lay eggs even if they didnt mate?
Yes! No as often but once they hit maturity they will!

Yes, but they'll be infertile. It's like with chickens.
