It is always a great honor and privilege to listen to the great Ray Parker Jr. He is such a refined speaker; one with a polished intellect to go along. Why he is not teaching a course in Music Appreciation at Harvard University (or an elite HBCU) is baffling to me. I would gladly pay to hear his lecture on the music business or any related topic. Great post!
I was a big Ray Parker fan until I caught my girlfriend kissing his album cover LOL! We've been married 32yrs now and still laugh about that day. Great interview.
My wife was a big Raydio fan back in the day. She said in high school her and her friends got to meet them backstage after a show. She used to like Arnell Carmichael.
Well that’s true love with a pinch of jealousy,,lmao,, it’s great seeing both these guys, brings bk memories, if I played some Howard Hewitt ,Teddy P., or Luther I probably got lucky, and what got me about Ray P. Was when I found out he was behind that iconic guitar lick on Rufus & Chaka Khan, you got the love,,
Thank you Howard Hewett for this absolutely insightful series. Ray Parker Jr is 24 carat gold. Both of you have spoken candidly. You both acknowledge the drastic changes in the industry yet are still committed to the craft.
You guys don't know how valuable this info is. Thank god this and other info regarding the music business is out here on the internet for us to see. There is so much to learn from these stories whether they are from Prince, Chaka, Stevie or Ray. I love it. To learn about the minute details people took on their journeys is really special and a learning experience for us all. I like how he said the new generation learned from the older ones. Great stuff.
this is GOLD...here is a lesson in wisdom and look at the views...so if you are here, it is a matter of your ears...who to listen to...and the free wisdom if you have ears to hear! The Other Woman is his best imo...never gets old
I just got done watching this and your video with Evelyn King. I don’t know there’s not more views.I m 55 and love all you guys! Thanks for all the great music and entertainment 😎
Absolutely brillant....fascinating insightful...great stories.....these guys are my musically heroes alongside the likes of stevie wonder.....prince.....michael jackson.....etc....etc.....black musical excellence.....comin all the way from england......
Howard, I just subbed to your channel here. I'm a huge fan of yours, have been since your earliest years with Shalamar (in fact, both "For the Lover in You" & " Do Me, Baby" by Prince are tied for my all-time personal favorite slow jam songs! And, I have most of your CDs).... I reeeeeeallly enjoyed this interview (i'm going to be watching your interview with Micki Free next). Ray FLOORED me at minute marker 1:03:25 when he talks about how the music of the 90s was mostly angry ("Everbody was talkin' about 'kill yo momma/shoot the police'"). I mean, I laughed so hard I cried! This is exactly what both Steve Harvey and Jamie Foxx have talked about in their stand-up routines..... Anyhow, I love your channel here. Keep up the good work... And I look forward to seeing your future content. Dave
I remember, just graduating High School in late 70's and saw Ray Parker Jr. on Sunset Blvd in his 2 Tone Rolls Royce. Some Co-Workers and Myself waved at him and he waved back, we start screaming and he just smiled. Good memories.
This is Game Recognizing Game...Ray Parker Jr...I love this Most Distinctive Artist...that Synthesizer and Bass Line... And he is singing the women's draws off...then Ghostbusters...i could go on and on...Thanks...Brother you make a joyful noise...and Thanks Mr Hewitt who also sang draws off the fans...
Alright Howard, I just found this channel. When are you going to make more videos with other "Industry Guest"? C'mon Howard, "Make that Move, Right Now". Okay, I had to go there, but you know what I mean. :-)
Thank you gentlemen. Your music was part of my youth, and I’m glad you all are still with us, and your stories are riveting. I still hunt down and play the old stuff, though. Old is gold, as they say. Great concept and great interview. Peace.
One living legend interviewing another living legend!!! I didn't know that Howard played bass!!! The importance of having good business sense, wise counsel, and keeping God first is evident in this expose! Thank you for a fantastic and revealing interview!!!
Ray Parker is a great musician, man and had an opportunity to meet him in Germany when Ghostbusters came out in a club called the Electric Warehouse in Munich Germany very real
I happened to listen to both For Those Who Want to Grove and You Make Me Feel Like Dancing today and saw the reference to this interview; wow, RPJ that song for Leo Sayer(and got no credit). I learned quite a bit about his extensive catalogue of music: definately deserves more acknowledgement!
HONEY IM RICH & JACK & JILL ,BAD BOY ,YA CAN'T CHANGE THAT, MUSIC THAT I GREW UP WITH ALONG WITH THE PHILLY SOUL I LOVE THE OLD SKOOL SOUL & RAY WELL WHAT CAN I SAY,MUSICIAN, PRODUCER ARRANGER Ray Parker jr genius
Great interview! I'm just baffled about his New Edition story, Ray said he should've done "mr telephone man" himself so he redid it as "a woman needs love". BUT that song came out in '81, 3 years prior to the new edition track or ghostbusters . Was there a mixup with some details?
No,don't forget what he said, Mr Telephone man was a record he had recorded years previously and was never released. New Edition heard that version and asked him to recut it years later so the timeline is correct.
Nice! Ray was one of the giants of studio musicians, even got big enough to take tapes to his home studio, to do his part. You should have his contemporary, guitarist David T. Walker, another studio giant!
Mr Ray Parker Jr why you didn't talk about the Jamaican artist Junior Tucker who did the original song.Did u give some of royalties.I think should Mr Ray
Another great interview, Ray Parker Jr. is a true legend.
💯
No question! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Glad these guys are still alive and doing their thing. A lot of musicians I grew up with are gone like members of Ohio Players, Crusaders, EWF etc.
RPJ is criminally underrated. He’s an American treasure.

No,don't forget what he said, Mr Telephone man was a record he had recorded years previously and was never released. New Edition heard that version and asked him to recut it years later so the timeline is correct.
Mr telephone mam was given to a jamaican singer called Junior Tucker whose album Ray Parker produced. It wasn't a hit until New Edition recorded it.
Amazing interview!! Nile Rodgers played Clarinet first as well. Take note!
I used to practice guitar and Fresno. In my grandma's garage with ray parker junior records
these two are legends of RB ,two great talents and voices.
I'M PRETTY SURE NO ONE KNOWS RAY & WA-WA WAS THE RYTHM SECTION FOR BARRY WHITE LOVE UNLIMITED ORCHESTRA
Ray Parker still involved with improving the royalties for musicians.
