    Not all the schools are the same. Some of the cafeteria managers are lazy and won't even plan out their menu's properly. They are supposed to have healthy balanced meals according to the federal guidelines. Radford High school has some of the best food with only one cook and one baker. If you have a good and organized cafeteria manager, the kids will have good food.

    I am a teacher in the DOE, and most of the school lunches at my school are healthy and great tasting. Kids are used to McDonalds and junk food, so they often won't eat it unless it's pizza or nachos. Parents often load their kids up with candy and hot cheetos for their recess snacks, so kids aren't starving. I'm worried about their future health, though.

  • @LuckyJujube
    @LuckyJujube 8 месяцев назад +14

    Have you seen what kids throw away and what they actually eat? Some kids don't want to wait in the lunch line and some think they need more social time with their friends instead of eating because they can snack at home after school. Besides, they may think it's cool to insult the public school lunches. If the cafeteria has limited funds and they are restricted to cook a balanced healthy meal, then food waste is inevitable.

    In my school in the 90s, we had lunch tickets. The menu was sent home a month in advance, so I could circle what I wanted to eat, and my Mom/me packed lunch the other days. If you wanted lunch from school, you got the card punched as payment or just paid cash.
    Why would you possibly take food and trash it if you don't want it?! Just don't take it!
    As older students, we served the lunches. You could just ask us to not put something on the plate if you didn't want it.
    I never realized how blessed we were to have a restaurant cook as the head chef (at least for lunch, snacks during snack time were still junk, no fruits). Yes, some of the vegetables and fruits were canned or frozen, but I still ate all of it, because I knew not to waste food and it was a balanced meal.
    Same private school today seems to give frozen junk food for everything. In fact, the DOE food in these photos with fresh vegetable bars looks amazing in comparison!

  • @jcjung5544
    @jcjung5544 8 месяцев назад +25

    I work at a public school and see student lunches on a regular basis. They may not be exactly what the students want but they lunches look pretty appetizing and healthy. It could be that kids are much more picky about food now and they are picking and choosing what they want to eat. We did not have a choice when I was going to school and besides salad, I ate everything on my plate. Those kids did not grab fruits and veggie sticks when they got home. They went straight for the chips!

    The disconnect comes from the lack of land to farm and the lack of farmers to farm the land. How many of us were taught to farm in school? How many of us were brainwashed into believing that after high-school, go to college, get a degree and find a job. School is structured just like a job. M-F 8am-3pm, you get 2, 15 minutes breaks(aka recess) and a lunch break, all while forced to do(learn) things you don't really want to do, but you do it in order to pass and move on to the next grade. Hardly any life skills are taught and in the end it's up to us to go learn self sufficiency skills in order to survive. Schools have bred food insecurity by showing a lack of respect to farmers who provide the food on our tables. Farmers are amongst the lowest wage earners and it's hard to earn a living as a farmer these days. Until we start putting people before profit, nothing will change.

    There's legislation already to prevent this yet in 2020 I recall a parent and teacher calling into the capital to complain of a student left embarrassed and crying from having their tray taken from them and tossing food into trash.
    I understand there's a lot of waste by students, but let's ensure we don't keep them from the access to food.

    My kids attend public schools and when I ask them what they ate for lunch at school , they say nachos and milk and an apple, sometimes it’s a cheese pocket with French fried and milk, mystery meat with frozen chicken nuggets…the American public school systems really needs to understand that feeding our children with healthy food is important and to teach our children about proper nutrition. I stayed our government waste money on foreign wars like Ukraine, Israel, and also fund those immigrant’s from south america.

    This is what happens when corporate America gets a hold of what was formerly a State-controlled institution. Isn't it odd that anything that smells of socialism and equality gets dumped for investors' return on investment?

    I was raised on ramen chips cookies and spam. I was 150lbs in 4th grade and could not find pants to wear at the store. Teach your kids to eat what is healthy and their brain will start to want it too. If you just give them sweets and salty msg snacks at home all the time they’re not going to eat healthy. The kids will be big body with weak brain and heart. Eat the vegetables.

      Do you have kids in public school right now? I take lunch to my son 2-3x a week because his school usually serves a snack for lunch basically pizza rolls, chicken nuggets, hot dog every week on rotation. Once a week they serve a real hot meal. So if your kid's school gets better food then good for you. But the rest of the schools need this attention.
