    Thanks for the explanation and demo. Aside from understanding the difference between relative and parallel key changes, this gives you ideas for song writing.

    Fantastic display of the principle that someone else delineated as "don't focus on keys but focus on chords instead". So he meant that if you want to make a turn in your musical story, learn what kind of chord changes you want. The vocabulary of your story is the chords you use. Keys are still relevant but you gain so much more freedom.

    Hi Brian,
    As always another great lesson with clear concise guidance. Definitely can hear a significant departure when transitioning to the parallel key. Hope I don't crash the Bus when I change lanes.

    Another informative and instructional video, Brian. If you can identify popular songs as examples of relative and parallel key changes, that might add additional context. Yeah, I realise you might have to dance around copyright restrictions, but...

      That is a really good suggestion. I'm actually so heavily focused on song writing, that it doesn't occur to me that using popular songs as examples would likely lead to more views. I definitely need to start implementing more popular song examples into my vids though. Thanks for the reminder! 😁

      I agree having some popular examples of songs that use the relative and parallel concepts would be helpful. Also tips on identifying this kind of change would be appreciated.

    How timely. I was learning a song with my instructor and I indicated that I thought the song was in the key of D. He says no, E Dorian. 🤷‍♂️

    Is the key change towards the end of Bon Jovi's "Living on a Prayer" (when the chorus goes up right after the solo) a parallel key change? Maybe I missed it, but is a parallel key change just going from X major to X minor or (vice versa) X minor to X major?

    I have a question. What is happening with Otis Redding's ' Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay '? Every chord in the progression is MAJOR but it doesn't sound wrong! Is it changing keys or just borrowing chords from a different key?

      @zombieguitar  10 месяцев назад

      Good question! I actually did an analysis on that song before. My conclusion was that it is in the key of G major, and all of the other chords can be labeled as "borrowed" chords, just as you said 😁

  • @kenkelly382
    @kenkelly382 9 месяцев назад

    Is it correct to say that some songs may use a borrowed chord without changing the Maj/ Relative minor key. While other songs do a complete departure to the chords of the parallel key? Lastly how do you transition smoothly back to the original key?

    • @zombieguitar
      @zombieguitar  9 месяцев назад

      Yes songs use borrowed chords all the time while remaining in the original key! How to smoothly transition back...try to make use of the V chord of the key that you are trying to get back to, in conjunction with using your ear as your primary guide. That should do the trick!

    Please excuse my complete ignorance, but I thought it was OK to play minor lead over major backing? Or is that just for blues? Sorry, newbie trying to get my head round stuff.

    • @zombieguitar
      @zombieguitar  10 месяцев назад +1

      You hit the nail on the head! Yes that's what I call "blues theory". That's a bit of a different ballgame than this "diatonic theory". I do have some good vids on blues theory here on the channel if you want to check them out 🎸

      @mrdcwdcw 10 месяцев назад

      @@zombieguitarHaha, that explains why when I try playing minor over major for blues it sounds OK (well, within the limits of my rather poor technique 😂), but doesn’t sound quite right over other stuff. Thanks for that, really helped clarify.
