    I'm not remotely a football expert but learning about all of the preparation and strategy that goes into one single play and the type of coverage used is fascinating. Clearly spoken, direct, concise, excellent. I remember John Madden in an interview stating how he'd gone to Vince Lombardi's football academy and how Lombardi spent an ENTIRE day going over just one offensive play.

    Cover 2 is truly a team defense all in thats why i usually only call it when its the scoring side of the field or backed up after we have established pressure on the Qb and have his mind on the passrush. I Will try to teach my safeties this technique of not drifting out too soon.

    • @GridironStuds
      @GridironStuds  3 года назад

      At his level no, as long as it occurs before the ball is thrown. However, it is recommended to get it at or around the 5 yard mark

    What do the corners, will, and sam do if H and Y run shallow drag routes?

    • @GridironStuds
      @GridironStuds  3 года назад +2

      Will and Sam pass those routes off yelling in to alert the next inside defender which would be Mike. Corners get reroutes on 1 and wait to see if something is coming across the field.

  • @michaelstgeorge9550
    @michaelstgeorge9550 5 месяцев назад

    if the Y goes deep and the running back comes out to the flats on a swing or bubble, is the sam picking that up or is that on the corner?

    • @GridironStuds
      @GridironStuds  5 месяцев назад

      Yes, Sam would rally to that swing or expand to pick up the back in the flat

  • @jay38091

  • @romanodonnell552

    Thanks coach! Quick question, what's the rule if the RB runs the swing on the same side of two go routes?

    • @GridironStuds
      @GridironStuds  2 года назад

      Outside backer (slot defender) would be responsible as the two go routes will cause the corner and safety to that side to retreat. I taught my linebackers to avoid going behind the line of scrimmage in zones to defender routes. Rally to a throw to a swing back and not open up a void in the defense for routes beyond the line of scrimmage to be targeted.

  • @AK-sq1jl
    @AK-sq1jl 4 года назад

    Very good and informative but im left wondering at the end if the Mike is supposed to go deep down the middle then what if one of the number 2s run a shallower slant route to the inside on like a 3rd and short type of play where they are just trying to get a 1st down? Are the sam and will linebackers supposed to run with them on those routes?

    • @Him-bl9kx
      @Him-bl9kx 3 года назад

      In a regular cover 2 your outside line backers are playing hook curl (to flat situationally) Zone is about communication. Outside Backers will drop 7-10 hook curl& MLB is in a middle read meaning if a tight end goes vertical or #2 goes vertical and breaks toward the middle of the field he will run with it and play under the route. Think about route concepts when you’re in coverage. If #2 runs a slant more than likely #1 will either also run a slant, or an out or a fade to run off the safety. Remember that every zone has a weakness also and in this case that weakness will be deep middle and outside sidelines. So if #2 runs a slant YELL “IN” and find work.. if #1 goes vertical & 2 runs a slant you would try your best to play the slant WITHOUT CHASING IT ACROSS THE FIELD remember you have another backer on the other side to pick up on it bc as linebackers we don’t cover grass and we don’t chase in zone. Either way your coach would rather you give up a 5 yard slant than a 25 yard crossing route. And remember that QBs reads are all based on timing so if he’s gonna throw that slant more than likely he’s throwing it NOW and not later. QBs drop 9/10 especially at lower level will tell you what routes are on the field, how deep they will break at and how quickly the ball will be out.

    Who takes the running back, in the flat, if both receivers on that side go for article?

    • @GridironStuds
      @GridironStuds  4 года назад +2

      The sam backer would come off and rally to a throw in the flat to the running back in that scenario. As #2 goes vertical, the SAM would release him to the safety and be available to come back down on a throw like that.

  • @daddyrooster88

    What about all slants? Basically man at that point?

    • @GridironStuds
      @GridironStuds  3 года назад

      Unless the back is to your side and you would not carry those slant routes across the field if they end up going there. You move in with the route for about 3 yards then call it in to the next defender.

      When you call out China, it alerts the outside LB or Nickel back that there is a hitch. He will then get out to that route to defend it while you sink back for the corner route.
