Would like to see other contenders in this segment. Nissan, Chevy, VW, & Subaru. Looking for cargo room and highway driving abilities. We have lots of gear for outdoor adventure travel. Trying to decide which would be best for a couple and their dog.
Need to do a second batch with Mazda CX90, Chevy Traverse, and Nissan Pathfinder. Then a third with Toyota Highlander, Subaru Ascent, and VW Atlas. Then a final comparison with the 3 winners.
Agreed that all the contenders are not shown. There is a bigger market for this type of vehicle. We're looking for a good travel vehicle that can possibly tow a couples trailer. Not particularly interested in all the crazy tech, but that seems to be the future way.
We just picked up a 2025 Honda in the Trailsport trim in blue. Upgraded from a 2017 CRV which we loved. We are not big techies but the Honda had all the features we needed and they are easy to use. Sure the others may be a little faster but I haven't wanted for more power in an suv. Ride quality is excellent and quiet even with the more off road oriented tire of the Trailsport. It looks like we may be testing its snow capabilities as we are expecting a storm here this weekend.
We chose the Pilot. Honestly because of mostly reliability. So far 11,000 miles and 8 months we have had no issues. AWD touring. Gripes, LCD could be a bit bigger. Don’t like the shift trans buttons. Otherwise perfect combo of buttons and knobs and touch screen.

Ride quality: While comfortable in some aspects, the Explorer can feel stiff on rough roads and may not mask road imperfections well. Infotainment system glitches: Some users report issues with the touch screen responsiveness and synchronization with other vehicle functions
@naveenthemachine what comparison test? So you like aged and under powered V6? GH gives you way more power train options and I would take any of them over Hyundai's. The 3.8L they are still using is an update from their old gas guzzler from early 2000s that was shared with Mitsubishi. Theres a reason why it is not used on other vehicles and will be killed off soon.
I hear the complaints about Kia not having wireless carplay and not having this option is just less but wireless is unreliable and can fail in the most unexpected moments. I prefer having it plugged in, more reliable and it is more efficiently charged
I’ve owned a 2025 Honda Pilot for a couple of months now and am amazed at how quickly and seamlessly the wireless CarPlay works. I’ve never had a problem connecting or staying connected. It’s the first time I’ve had a car with wireless connecting and it’s a game changer.
I had a 2019 Kia Sorento EX V6 that I bought based on all the great reviews at the time. 5 years later I sold the car due to reliability issues (water pump failure, spark plugs, replacing front axles, periodic oil leaks - issues that started after warranty expired) and the leather interior / paint exterior looked dated and worn out, much more than our 2014 Honda Accord we had at the time. Sadly, the Kia is worth very little and depreciated a ton. Sure Kia’s look nice when new and do give a few more options standard like rear heated seats, but it doesn’t beat Honda reliability, durability, and resale value. I also think the Honda looks nicer too, though that’s subjective. 9 inch screen is plenty big enough for me. Seems likes it’s an issue mostly for reviewers that are used to seeing massive screens in the cars they test. Starting at computer screens all day, I actually like the smaller display that’s less in your face. Also, agree that Kia had a better adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist, but we chose a 2023 Honda Pilot for the ride/quality and are very happy with it.
Yea I keep hearing and seeing this with Hyundai/Kia - they grew from 20th place to top 3 in an incredibly fast pace and there are growing pains. They'll need to dial in quality to stay there.
We have the 2016 sorento SX v6. Zero issues with every thing you just mentioned. We have 134k km on it and the only thing i had to replace is the sway bar 350$. I did the spark plug by myself at 100k km. Change the transmission fluid at 96k km and now flushed the coolant at 130k km. The suv drives and looks amazing inside\out. You probably a guy that doesn't take a good care of your cars so that's why it looked like 💩.
I love my Explorer ST. Unmatched performance and honestly the bluecruise works great and I’ve never had a back ache on a long road trip cause the ST seats are bolstered to support you really well + the massaging seats
Pilot for me with all you said and more especially so many vehicles review so so much great things about new kia Hyundai and genesis and dodge and ram products among others, but I also go back reliability, brand history and philosophy and crash test results and build quality...example, people including reviews complain about Honda being heavier than Hyundai kia but don't include fact more steel is used to increase visibility and safety, or that soft plastic is just as much or more toxic to produce and disposable, or or Honda fuel economy gets better and better while others get worsen over time.
Purchased the Honda Pilot back in November 2023, mainly because of reliability and v6 engine. VERY LUCKY to have found a LX AWD trim, which is no longer offered, at MSRP. Doesn't have a lot of options, but we can live without it because all we wanted was a reliable car that can get us from point A to B.
Great review, lots of information and clean accurate explanation. You are the only one of the other hundred of others on the internet and the millions that buy the Honda that chooses the Ford over the Honda and Telluride.👍
100% agree. The interior layout is phenomenal. Especially with young kids and car seats. The ability to move the middle bench while the car seats are in place is so convenient. Had ours since Oct ‘24. Only gripe….not backlighting the HVAC temp and audio volume buttons is borderline inexcusable.
The 3rd row isn’t a comfortable place to sit especially for long trips. However, these are family oriented vehicles and in most cases, parents would occupy the front row.
Honda Pilot two tone Choclate and Black interior looks amazing vs the all black. I would never buy unreliable Kia junk and Ford is cool but still a Ford at the end if the day.
The Ford’s climate control screens aren’t hard to use, I don’t know why this continues to bother people. It’s different at first, and then you get used to where to touch like anything else.
Great video, I really hope that Ford brings proper Explorer back to Europe, 😍🤟. I love the looks of it the most and plug-in variant that we used to have was just perfect to drive
Honda Pilot will out last the other 2 cars Reliably is where this Vehicle shines my last Honda Pilot lasted 350,000 miles and I bought a New one the other 2 cars will be at the Junk Yard way before that many Miles.
A friend was just left stranded on a 2021 Pilot and I picked her up on my Telluride lol. Hondas specially newer ones are not that reliable, Toyotas have always been better at reliability.
I believe the Telluride is going to be all-new quite soon, and I'm really hoping they don't ditch the V6 and smooth torque-converter automatic for a turbo 4 and clunky DCT like they did in the Sorento. I'm hanging on to my 6-year-old Sorento V6 in anticipation of the next Telluride. Don't let me down, Kia. (I'd actually be very happy with the EV9, but the price is a bit much.)
I hear a lot of good things about the Telluride but the Pilot's superficial disadvantages pale in comparison to the likelihood that it'll be the only one still on the road with 200k on it twenty years from now, still driving almost like a new car, still with half its useful life ahead of it. That's exactly the condition of my '04 CR-V today and the reason we're planning to buy the Pilot's Ridgeline sibling in the coming months, since for our needs the bed is useful but a body-on-frame truck isn't needed or wanted.
Unlikely. Your 2004 is a 2004. They were built for more longevity then. Honda has had massive issues as-of-late. Lots of oiling problems. The fact that you still drive a 2004 speaks for itself. Your only consideration is probably longevity over 20 years. 97% of people aren't shopping for the same reason.
You’ll love the Ridgeline. I’m on my second one. My first was a 2017 RTL-T. At 20K miles it was totaled by a distracted driver who ran a stop 🛑 sign, hit me mid truck just behind driver’s side , turned left into a concrete wall. Walked away with seatbelt bruise. My current one is a 2022 RTL, great quiet ride, hauls over 1,500 lbs and tows up to 5K lbs. Good luck with yours.
8:53 meaning they still have the old powertrain, which kinda have some problems right? Of course it comes with the industry leading 10yr/100k miles warranty I believe.
I own an ST this comparison is unfair, but 21:52 I’m happy we are still talking about “driving dynamics” as a criteria for cars these days. Second row seat ventilation is a tad lower on the priorities list. Please keep people buying Tellurides, I’ll keep passing them on the freeway like regular traffic.
In this segment I am looking for room to haul things, comfortable ride and power. The one thing I wish Ford would do is quiet the cabins, other than that I would take the Explorer.
I’m a long time explorer owner and I love my Explorer. It’s not the value choice, I get it, but the engine is great and the “ is he the police “ factor on the highway is a great no cost , standard feature 😅
As a 2024 Honda Trailsport owner, I can wholeheartedly agree that the transmission issues/jerkiness really spoils the Honda experience. I've had several dealers look at it several times, and each time they say 'that's just how it is' and nothing is wrong. It's honestly a big issue, and I expect it will turn a lot of people off from the product. I wish I'd test driven MY car before I bought it, as I would have felt it beforehand. My mistake. Either way, I'd caution any potential buyers to TEST DRIVE THE SAME VEHICLE YOU INTEND TO BUY. Not all of the Pilot's have jerkiness in the trans, and some are better than others.
Watch Savagegeese’s video comparing the Pilot and Acura MDX. They tuned the transmission on the Acura much more smoothly even though it’s the same transmission
I’ve owned a 2025 Pilot Elite for a couple of months and have had zero problems with transmission jerkiness over 5800 miles. I also watched the savagegeese reviews and didn’t understand what they meant. My transmission is smooth as silk and always shifts appropriately. I did notice some weirdness on a test drive of another Pilot a couple of months back, so it must depend on the individual car - which is not a great endorsement of quality control(!)
You've forgotten to figure in the $$$ over MSRP that Kia dealers are charging. The Ford will get the best discounts and the Honda will get seasonal specials. In 2020 the Hyundai/Kia dealers in the Albuquerque area were asking $7-10,000 over MSRP. I'm sure they must have cut back on that amount, but by how much?
Telluride is nice but my boss at my job has a top trim one and it’s been a complete lemon to her n bothers me cause I’m from the Hyundai excel era n seem like things ain’t change . So I’d go Pilot . Explorer never been reliable any gen .
This was a bit of an apples-to-oranges comparison, since the ST was like $10K more than the other two. The reviewer also didn't mention that starting with MY25, the ST (or Platinum with V6) is 6-passenger only. You cannot get a 2nd row bench, only captain's chairs. This is a deal-breaker for me.
The primary issue reported with the 2024 Kia Telluride is a significant recall related to a potential fire risk due to a faulty front power seat motor that can overheat if the seat slide knob gets stuck, prompting Kia to advise owners to "park outside" until the issue is fixed; this recall affects a large number of Telluride models from 2020-2024. Key points about the Telluride recall: Fire risk: The main concern is that the front power seat motor can overheat due to a stuck slide knob, potentially causing a fire while the vehicle is parked or driving. Affected models: The recall applies to most Telluride vehicles from the 2020-2024 model years.
"not the latest tech" is the Best tech... I don't want to have to go to night school to learn how to operate my car. Give me a good stereo, physical hvac buttons, and... well, that's all the tech I really need...
(Woman that likes cars)I’d go ford but not the st trim level Iv driven the telluride not a fan, Iv driven the active and platinum 2025 trim on the ford I loved the way the ford drove assuming that’s the rwd based chassis. I’m gonna save more for the platinum for its better ride quality. Pilot was also a really a nice vehicle aswell as driving the trail sport trim I think.
I'll take the Explorer in ST form. Also, why no mention of safety ratings? Towing capability? An actually test of their AWD systems in real world conditions? No way you can honestly pick a winner without these considerations.
Not getting any of them. Kia and Palisade are best for features and style but for reliability, features, and style I'm going Mazda CX90. May have less space for adults but when you buy these SUVs who has anyone older than teenagers lets be real. I like that Mazda reliability and inline 6. Interior is nicer than Lexus too
@@uludak8468CX90 built in Japan which tends to be very picky with production quality similar to what Toyota does and the other brands don't do. Long term maintenance I've heard can be more expensive but Hondas seem to have transmission problems all the time. Idk how I feel about Toyota turbo 4s...Kia and Hyundai have had history of catching on fire. Ford is Ford. Nuff said there. Id rather pay the little extra for Mazda for something that seems worth the premium these SUVs are charging nowadays. If I'm limited to a vehicle in this class. Outside of this class I would get a last gen Avalon trd pro in White with low mileage. Or a previous gen Sienna V6.
Almost every car, truck, SUV, etc, from any brand looks good, but i don't have much money, so i prefer Honda (Civic, Accord, Pilot, etc,) almost over any other brand
Look at any Kia or Hyundai from 2019 now. Peeling coatings, leather worn and mechanical issues after warranty expires. They are great as a lease or if you upgrade every 5 to 6 years. If you plan to keep a car 10 years then the Honda is it.
Wireless android/auto and carplay is finally coming to US Genesis products. It's an OTA/dealer update and is supposed to go as far back as to 2019 Genesis products. Same thing will eventually be coming to older KIA/Hyundai vehicles including the telluride. Fun fact but Korean cars sold in other parts of the world have had this updates for up to a few years. They just took FOREVER to release it to America. Extremely annoying but I also prefer the stability and cooler charging of wired android auto/carplay. Using it wirelessly and charging via a wireless charger makes your phone hot and will indeed degrade your phone's battery quicker. But the option of having it is needed.
After driving all 3 suvs from here, one will just burnt down after 50k to 100k kms. No prize for right guess. So there is literally no competition between 3 of them. Its just 2 of them 😅
Honda Pilot is the best value but the Kia is second. Ford even though it will be fun to drive likely won't last as long as the others and the upkeep will be more on average.
Honda Pilot is the slowest of the bunch with the oldest looking design. Ford Explorer is the least reliable of the bunch and worst in gas efficiency. Kia, by far, is the best pick among the three. But it still lacks reliability and efficiency. My pick is the Toyota Grand Highlander. Despite the recalls on its new engine. I know Toyota fixes these things for the consumer peace of mind. But with its history of reliability and efficiency, Toyota is the best pick.
Yeah, Toyota never has a problem. Outside maybe their Tundra and a few other problems. All car dealerships have service and parts departments where they make most of their money for a reason and it is not just for oil changes.
I got 2025 Honda pillot black edition top tier. Just drove 1500 miles. Now has electric issue. VIN code starts with 5. DO NOT RECOMMEND 👎👎👎👎👎 Within those 3 options. I prefer CX90. As right now, I won't recommend any car made in America or made in Mexico. Made in Japan no good as before but still more reliable than other. Which those most options we can can get for daily drive. If Chinese car can import to u.s I really want try.😢
Complete BS, when he talked so dismissively of the Explora's middle seats, he sat there with more than an inch of space between legs and back of seat but it was noticeable he did not sit in the Honda's second row while bashing the explorer... Fair?
I think it's important to point out that these reviews are just the concluding thoughts by many different Edmunds staff who have spent time with all the vehicles and provided their input to Brian for presentation.
@@ALMX5DP My point was about optics why is this so difficult to understand? There he is in the video literally sitting in the Exploerer's seat while demonstrating the space between knees and the seat back while in the other take standing outside of the Pilot saying it was more roomier. Why wasn't a like for like comparison? We all would have seen the difference and not having to comment i]on perceived misprepresentations.
@@JibWangson Are you serious? Mate he did not give a side view like @3:30 are you that vacuous or simply dishonest? He called the ST's seatbacks flat but look at te Honda's
Ford does the best in a crash, but safety did not seem to be a concern? Honda and KIA had the worst rating, seems more important than cup holders? Telluride has the worst seats and is dominated by plastic.
I actually agree with this test completely The key day-to-day living is the better one I've had the opportunity to test all three and love the key away more and it seems like other people do as well It's crazy that some people are still paying over sticking for this car The dealership cannot keep enough of this model in stock and plus even on the streets I see far more kias than the Honda pilot or the explorer combined even my neighbors trade it in there Ford explorer for the Kia and couldn't be happier

I’m a long time explorer owner and I love my Explorer. It’s not the value choice, I get it, but the engine is great and the “ is he the police “ factor on the highway is a great no cost , standard feature 😅
This video is really informative, KINDA LIKE THE HOST!!!!
Explorer, but the ST model with 400 hp really puts it far ahead of the pack for me
As a 2024 Honda Trailsport owner, I can wholeheartedly agree that the transmission issues/jerkiness really spoils the Honda experience.
If someone could get past the brand KIA, it's a great buy in my opinion.
Pilot 10/10 times
My family loved the Telluride so much, we bought two. One is wolf grey like this tester. Love it. Highly recommend!!
Which one interior smells the best? Love the new car smell
Telluride is nice but my boss at my job has a top trim one and it’s been a complete lemon to her n bothers me cause I’m from the Hyundai excel era n seem like things ain’t change . So I’d go Pilot . Explorer never been reliable any gen .
How good 2025 all new Kia Telluride will be.....
We have loved blue cruise in both our Ford and Lincoln
This was a bit of an apples-to-oranges comparison, since the ST was like $10K more than the other two. The reviewer also didn't mention that starting with MY25, the ST (or Platinum with V6) is 6-passenger only. You cannot get a 2nd row bench, only captain's chairs. This is a deal-breaker for me.
How much is the Ford Blue Cruise subscription??
The primary issue reported with the 2024 Kia Telluride is a significant recall related to a potential fire risk due to a faulty front power seat motor that can overheat if the seat slide knob gets stuck, prompting Kia to advise owners to "park outside" until the issue is fixed; this recall affects a large number of Telluride models from 2020-2024.
Key points about the Telluride recall:
Fire risk:
The main concern is that the front power seat motor can overheat due to a stuck slide knob, potentially causing a fire while the vehicle is parked or driving.
Affected models:
The recall applies to most Telluride vehicles from the 2020-2024 model years.
That’s old news dude. Most Tellurides have already had that recall done and no fires have been reported yet.
@fcg243 That's not even all the recalls 🤣 no thank you. The major one is the piston failure
"not the latest tech" is the Best tech... I don't want to have to go to night school to learn how to operate my car. Give me a good stereo, physical hvac buttons, and... well, that's all the tech I really need...
The latest tech is easy to operate… I’ve had that Honda system - it’s OLD and clunky
@@skycaptain3344 yeah, but it works great, it's simple, and does what you need.
Biggest issue woth HONDA is that they will get stolen or vandalized for just about ANYTHING
2025 explorer ST is the most powerful one and brings you a lot of fun!
(Woman that likes cars)I’d go ford but not the st trim level
Iv driven the telluride not a fan,
Iv driven the active and platinum 2025 trim on the ford I loved the way the ford drove assuming that’s the rwd based chassis.
I'll take the honda over the others
Not getting any of them. Kia and Palisade are best for features and style but for reliability, features, and style I'm going Mazda CX90. May have less space for adults but when you buy these SUVs who has anyone older than teenagers lets be real. I like that Mazda reliability and inline 6. Interior is nicer than Lexus too
i wouldn't touch a mazda bc of reliabilty
@@uludak8468how are Mazdas not reliable?
10 and 15 years later which of these are likely to be running without breaking the bank?
My 2020 ST tuned and exhaust EATS
Eats Pilots and craps Tellurides
@zapcity8992 and SRT's 😆
Almost every car, truck, SUV, etc, from any brand looks good, but i don't have much money, so i prefer Honda (Civic, Accord, Pilot, etc,) almost over any other brand
Did Hyundai/Kia fix their engine issues yet? I have met numerous people who have needed full engine swaps.
What happened to AC seats? I'm sure ventilation is okay, but I want AC.
What is AC seat?
@vzheka1981 air conditioned
Hmm no Grand Highlander?
Look at any Kia or Hyundai from 2019 now. Peeling coatings, leather worn and mechanical issues after warranty expires. They are great as a lease or if you upgrade every 5 to 6 years. If you plan to keep a car 10 years then the Honda is it.
I would take the Pathfinder
I would take the explorer st over the other 2 its performance and looks are better than the others
Honda Pilot V6 N/A is the best option!
400K miles guaranteed vs 150K to 200K
i hardly see any the explorer with the V6 TT IRL
The I-4 TC would make more sense in this comparison
Kia telluride ❤❤❤❤
After driving all 3 suvs from here, one will just burnt down after 50k to 100k kms. No prize for right guess. So there is literally no competition between 3 of them. Its just 2 of them 😅
Don’t Kia engines blow up prematurely?
Honda Pilot is the best value but the Kia is second. Ford even though it will be fun to drive likely won't last as long as the others and the upkeep will be more on average.
Why no Chevy Traverse in this comparison?
junk!
@@retgi1So says you. I would prefer a professional review over some random opinion.
They got tired of getting out pushing it through out the test.
Ford…the king. Kia…contender. Pilot…pretender😊
In todays techno world, warranty warranty warranty.
I got 2025 Honda pillot black edition top tier. Just drove 1500 miles. Now has electric issue. VIN code starts with 5. DO NOT RECOMMEND 👎👎👎👎👎
Within those 3 options.
Fair?
Agree. I own none but the visuals speak for themselves

The only one there that is worth anything is the Honda. It will last a lot longer and costs lower than the other two
I actually agree with this test completely The key day-to-day living is the better one I've had the opportunity to test all three and love the key away more and it seems like other people do as well It's crazy that some people are still paying over sticking for this car The dealership cannot keep enough of this model in stock and plus even on the streets I see far more kias than the Honda pilot or the explorer combined even my neighbors trade it in there Ford explorer for the Kia and couldn't be happier
Why bring the st and Not the active or st line they are more in price and still better performance and gas mileage.
Meh, 3 row mid sizers are silly. Just get a Tahoe. Or a mini van.
When purchasing a vehicle, reliability is at the top of my list. Honda wins I know it will outlast the Kia and Ford.
Both Honda and Ford have the newest gen models, but 4 year old Kida still wins. Telluride is a very, very nice suv.
Why no highlander?? Not grand highlander but the normal
Highlandet?
Smaller than these. Almost unusable 3rd row
@ yea but the price is same as a honda and lets face it thry have reliability which thr korean or ford dont
You shouldn’t have this comparison with the Ford ST but rather the Ford Explorer Timberline🤷🏼🙄
I would buy the Honda all day
This edmonds so anything Hyundai group is the winner your welcome
no.1 I'm South Korean!!
Ugh....just delete the comment. It's embarrassing to Koreans everywhere
Winner: Toyota Grand Highlander
Reliability and longevity of the Explorer and Telluride leave much to be desired.
You are comparing different trims with what’s featured.
No Palisade? I would take it over Kia for just a bit more luxury touches.
I'd be happy with the Kia or Honda.
Ford for Fun
Where is Toyota, Mazda and Nissan ??
13:22 😂 palisade in india have wireless carplay, just not in the USA.
Honda all day long it just does everything right every day all day
