Me too. But those memorex tapes I used were crap. I think they were “normal bias” if you remember those cassette days….normal bias were the cheapest kind. 😂
The encore of the "farewell" show lived on one side of a cassette and I wore it out. Such beautiful and powerful music .... 40 years later I still feel every note.
I crack up because i used to play this concert in the burger King break room every day. Everyone eventually got into t, and asked for it. Hell i was 14, 15 at the time. The freaking place did allow me to meet the woman i will wish i could be with. But this version of the song is one of Pete best imprvisional solos, He was on it in 1982/83 with Gilmour, VanHallen, all the other fingers making impacts. But Pete played with emotion this night. A+
As I said in my own post, he just has this way of calling us out on our own bullshit. Naked Eye, Dr. Jimmy, Eminence Front, The Sea Refuses No River, The Punk And The Godfather... We could be here all night. ❤
Only cool people KNOW how deep the Who really are. When they're serious and have their game faces on theres no better locomotive Rock band on earth. What a badass rock group
Press any button! Simply the best band and they are firing at their max here. I loved Keith as we all did. But Thank God we had them. What a gift to us they are.
"you hold the gun, I hold the wound" these are real lyrics, take note music of today. also Pete’s part here blows me away every damn time. I love these men
This is best live version of this song. This is the way live music should be played. No auto tune, no backing track, just four guys playing instruments and singing with power, passion, and bravado.
Wow. Wish i did. I just saw the Who last year for the first time but no Keith or John. They were incredible tand Zac Starkey was great but how i wish i could have seen the original members
The Who have been blessed with some great drummers Keith Moon, Kenny Jones, Simon Phillips and last but not least Zak Starkey all excellent drummers with different styles plus of course the great John Entwistle great bassist.
Saw them on this tour and was overjoyed when they did this song - one of my favorite Who songs. And they did the whole thing, lots of versions I've seen and heard leave out the 3rd verse which is a shame because those are powerful lyrics. While Pete's solo was great, the Ox was on fire as well - he was so great for so long that I think we took him for granted
The Who performed Naked Eye at Outsidelands Festival in San Francisco on Aug 17 2017. It was quite an unexpected song to hear and i was so happy to be there.
His 1979 shows were incredible. He played with fire and was faithful in many ways to Keith’s sonic space within songs. But even then his simple time keeping instincts created sonic gaps. Compare 1979-82 Jones Baba O’Riley with any decent Moon era performance and the difference immediate. When Roger asked Kenney Jones to leave as not meshing with Who catalog, Jones stopped really caring and his drumming became what it is here: workmanlike.
Guntag, plasticweapon, and Amaterasuheika your three opinions are all well and fine, but Roger himself had expressed not liking his much simpler style compared to Keith's manic drummer with four arms approach. So 'nuff said. Lol I'm 52 and never got to see the 'horrible 'ho, but did get to see Kenny with them at the Los Angeles Colosseum in 1982. Kicked ass. In 1989 saw them twice in one week with Simon Phillips on the kit kicking ass as per usual for him. In 2007 with Zak Starkey, Ringo Starr's very capable son bashing away at the skins. 2013, again with Starkey. And finally in 2019, last year, Starkey. As much as I love The Who that was it for me. Long Live Rock. But the original conversation seemed to be Moon vs. Jones. Sorry, but Moon all day and 100 drunken pill popping days of summer and still Moon. Why? Kenny Jones is great, competent. A historic mod from back in the day with The Faces. But booooorrrrrring. Moon? Possibly the best rock drummer ever. No fucking comparison. Moon the loon for lifetime acheivement award-best drummer on multiple substances holding back from pissing on stage when they yank him off at the end of the night on occasions too numerous to count. Lol
@@markvaught672 In his autobiography, Daltrey says that Jones was not a good fit for The Who. He said that Jones did great with the material on "Face Dances" and "It's Hard" but had difficulty with songs on which Moon had drummed.
Having seen Starkey on two disparate occasions (16 years apart) I wish I could have seen Kenny Jones play. I loved his work post-Moon and man... he really has not gotten the accolades he deserves.
This is my favorite song by THE WHO you never hear it on the radio, this song has lot of meaning to it, this video is the best version in my opinion, I also like the way ROGER winks and smiles at the beginning!!!!
Hey way too go on cleaning this concert up, appreciate it immensely !! My brother and I have watched it thousands of times no lie.. The versions of theses songs are CRUSHING! Pete's soloing was never better. And the bass level tipped to the left speaker helped open my ears to what john was REALLY doing. A real master work this is!
Was one of the first Who concerts I watched when I was 12/13. Premiered on HBO.. I listened to them many times on albums, but never saw a live performance until this. Blown away by it. Still one of my fave things to watch.
Such charisma. I first heard The Who play this song live in August 2000 at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, CA; I was 16 years old at the time (younger Who fan here!)! Then I heard this version on the companion CD to The Who's farewell tour show in Toronto in 1982. Absolutely love it; so mesmerizing and poetic!!!!
"You can cover up your guts But when you cover up your nuts You're admitting that there must be something wrong..." Still one of the most powerful lyrics I ever heard in my life. Pete just has a way of calling us out on our own bullshit.
One of their greatest. Pete is god here, his voice is so good, and just listen to that solo. It's definitely up there. No not that first one, the second one. Ya, Pete sucks right? He's actually a little pissed off I think. I love Roger here.
So happy I was able to experience this two months earlier at the LA Coliseum. I had a head full of acid and it was the first time I ever heard the song...it remains one of the most magical musical moments of my lifetime.
great epic solo by pete, I re play it all the time[ so much for those guitar snobs who ridicule Townshend[ also entwistle unmatchable and jones better than moon in my view on this showing
God wnen it moves i to 6/8 time iforget rush etc. This is musianship at its finest everyones playing lead its just awesome greatest rock&roll band of all bar none
Was a freshman at the University of Buffalo in '82 when they played this gig. Was only 90 min from Toronto, but living on a college student's wages, couldn't see them. Made up for it in '89 on the Kids Are Alright Tour. Saw them at Giants Stadium, and they played this as well. Still have the concert tee from it.
I have this concert on vhs! It's been with me 20+ years...The intensity is unreal, especially this song! My favorite song by The Who by far! I'm on my way to see them November, 27th in Minneapolis, MN touring Quadrophenia! Thanks for reposting this song and concert!! Its a gem!
I like the part where there's a split screen of John and Pete because it's like joint lead guitar and bass guitar. Normally the camera goes on Pete way more often
I remember listening to this on a cassette boombox while waiting for the bus in San Diego circa 1976 while in the U.S. Navy. Such a formative song for me. I wonder what happened to that gold Telecaster that Pete was playing. Worth big bux nowadays.
This was their FIRST LAST SHOW. I wanted to be there, ut we had a gig of our own about 5 blocks down the street at The Nickelodeon. I did get to see 2 more 'absolutely te last shows' in Toronto over the years.. :D
Nobody rocked it like The Who. Saw them four times. Loved them. One night at the Forum in Los Angeles...this is back in the mid 70s...Moonie cut himself really badly on a cymbal and could not continue...taken to the hospital...so Pete asked if there was a drummer in the huge crowd, but he said you have to be really good...well, some guy actually stepped up and played with them...what a thrill, and he *was* really good...great show...
I dont see anything wrong with the way they look here. They just look different. Could have been far sillier (Rodger’s hair looked very silly at some point after this period!)
I saw them on December 11 In Worcester, MA. Pretty much the same clothes - and set list. Unfortunately, they didn't play this song. They did play Magic Bus though, which was cool.
call me crazy ,,, never took any dope ( - oh no , thats wrong , once some 30 years ago , must have been in my mid forties , i had a most wonderful acidic spring afternoon here in the oldest Amsterdam park , then went on to make some of my very best 'glorious' spaghetti Bolognese , one of the almost too many of my wonderful days of my life with my friends , good wine and all ... !!! ... ) - but this performance by this 'band' is just - one of the plenty ! - as good as it gets ,,,, and that must be why they're the greatest rock-band ever to 'thunder' down on us . .. again and again and again ..... thank you so much , guys ! - and thank you for the upload !!!
Pete had a problem with Keith too! Why do you think Keith was so insecure? Why was he so wild? To make himself larger than life...but nothing impresses Pete. Interestingly he was happy with Zak behind him...because he reminded him of Keith and he was a more professional Keith.
MAN, I LOVE this song and especially this performance!! Pete's in the ZONE baby!! I should have been there. but we watched the tv w/the simulcast!! Does anyone notice that at 3:24 Pete hits the wrong string/note and kinda reacts. I LOVE Pete!!!!!!!!!!
Saw this show live at a remote rock theater big screen broadcast, thousands there. Many in the theater, long time Who fans, were so let down by this phoned in show although this song did stand out for us. The difference between this and their incandescent live performances so painfully stark.
Townsend's solo is golden as well as his other gripping strands. But honestly this rendition has an almost sleepy feel behind it. I mean, yeah Roger is still belting it out but there's a feeling of restraint/tiredness compared to say The Young Vic or Isle shows. One can get it of a band aging and while still slinging it somewhat sinks into that "Vegas" rote. Still, a too often unrecognized song from their catalog that's always good to hear in any regard!
Schecters, Like a Tele with 10lbs off it and dual humbuckers for the mid 80's. It was a great guitar, but where i kept it, weather got the best of it, the neck warped /- .062 each way in 6 months
The best version and one of (if not THE) best version (apologies to Keith) The guitar solo & Roger simply rule this song, and The Ox is not too shabby either. Barry Wholigan
This is the best version of Naked Eye for me . I taped the 82 Toronto concert off FM rock radio and had my cassette for many years
Same here! I stayed home this Saturday night they broadcasted and taped it!!
Life changing

this is the best naked eye hands down. well said
This is probably the Who's most underrated song ever. I love every version of it I hear.
Cant believe it was on the cutting room floor. Might be my favorite who song if i was forced to pick just one
I agree!! This is one of my favorite obscure Who songs.
I agree...
And arguably the best version.
That doesnt look like jason bohnham ,son, on drums. Great tune though,!
For my money, the best lyrics Pete ever wrote, and a perfect example of why his music is often described as "thinking man's rock & roll".
As I said in my own post, he just has this way of calling us out on our own bullshit. Naked Eye, Dr. Jimmy, Eminence Front, The Sea Refuses No River, The Punk And The Godfather... We could be here all night. ❤
No one knew what to think of them when Tommy hit, was too much…
Townshend is underrated as a lead guitarist. Undoubtedly worlds greatest rhythm guitarist.
Hes not underrated.
Not by me...a great all round guitarist
Bob weir holds the title for greatest rhythm player
The Ox's guitar was as much a rhythm guitar, as it was a bass...
Only cool people KNOW how deep the Who really are.
When they're serious and have their game faces on theres no better locomotive Rock band on earth.
What a badass rock group
Best rendition of this song. Explosive!!!
The best song of the who . It is perfect

I get chills during the second solo, specifically @6:28. After I saw this concert I started playing guitar.
Absolutely a great epic tune
The finest lyrics Mr. Townsend ever wrote IMO.
This is best live version of this song. This is the way live music should be played. No auto tune, no backing track, just four guys playing instruments and singing with power, passion, and bravado.

Great version, Pete's solo is so haunting!
His guitar is sparking , and some great harmonic notes in there...
That's the version , fantastic ! 🎸

YES
I agree
Millions agree
I still get goose bumps whenever I hear this song or see this video. I thank God I got to see Pete, Rodger, Keith and John at Anaheim Stadium.
Wow. Wish i did. I just saw the Who last year for the first time but no Keith or John. They were incredible tand Zac Starkey was great but how i wish i could have seen the original members
Rodger?
I am speechless!!!👍👍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Could not love a song or a band more than this !!
Some lovely guitar work from Pete.
Over the top
Brilliant !
My favourite version.

The who are the greatest band of all time
that solo at the end it doesnt get much better [ awesome
8 minutes of bliss
Those huge Hiwatt amp heads behind Pete...so sonic and rich.
I have this concert on VHS ...sounds and looks great still
Pete inspires me to pick up my guitar again and again, brilliant
they actually had a closed circut/pay per view showing of this concert in nearby bars and theatres!
The Who have been blessed with some great drummers Keith Moon, Kenny Jones, Simon Phillips and last but not least Zak Starkey all excellent drummers with different styles plus of course the great John Entwistle great bassist.
So true 👍🎸
Add Scott Devours to that list. A monster of a drummer.
God what a song. Kenny is amazing. They are all amazing. Pete is the greatest.
Pete definitely is the greatest

Always good to see good ol john.... Love his playing..
The "Powerful" Who !! No other band can play as clean ,..as tight,..as together ,..as the "Masters" ,...
Kenny Jones f'ing rocks. I love Keith Moon more than anyone, but Kenny got a bad rap as his replacement. He f'ing rocks.

Pete’s killing it and the ox
Like alot of others..taped this off the radio and played it to death. I think I still have it. Long Live The Who!
AWESOME SOLO AT THE END [ TO ME THE WHO AT THEIR PEAK HERE
I remember listening to this on a cassette boombox while waiting for the bus in San Diego circa 1976 while in the U.S. Navy. Such a formative song for me. I wonder what happened to that gold Telecaster that Pete was playing. Worth big bux nowadays.
Shoot First fun fact, this is not a fender tele, this is a schecter guitar.
Yep, and he donated it to the Hard Rock Cafe in New York I believe. Lucky sods !!
And from this they went directly into Squeeze Box which I’ll always remember laughing at. The Who were funny!
This was their FIRST LAST SHOW. I wanted to be there, ut we had a gig of our own about 5 blocks down the street at The Nickelodeon. I did get to see 2 more 'absolutely te last shows' in Toronto over the years.. :D

you weren't there. it was 1973 at the cow palace in san fran. he passed out from doing horse tranquilzers.
I love Pete's voice, the 80s glam look betrays how great they sound.
Pete's voice is everything😍 partners so well with Roger's strong rock vocals I think x
The look wasn't their fault everyone looked awful in the 80ies lol! At least their music was, and still is incredible!

So Great, Amazing!!!
nothing wrong with kenny jones to me
Kenny Jones is a fantastic drummer 🥁❤️✌️
I agree, but he's no Keith Moon or Zak Starkey
Correct. He and Pete just didn’t get along. He’s certainly more interesting than Ringo’s kid
He was always a good drummer. He just didn’t have the out-of-control playing style as Keith did, which the Who was known for.
Pete had a problem with Keith too! Why do you think Keith was so insecure? Why was he so wild? To make himself larger than life...but nothing impresses Pete. Interestingly he was happy with Zak behind him...because he reminded him of Keith and he was a more professional Keith.
One of my favorite solos by Pete. 80's in Mind, Gilmour, Vanhalen, etc. were all popular, so he had to make a fit. He did.
Genius lyrics.

Townshend's lead playing is so fucking tasty here!
Kenny Jones rocks...!!!!
