Need a review, he too was corrupt all these rulers have been corrupt ever since.
I only respect Gowon for being the youngest President in Nigeria, but the bloodshed he caused at biafra war will hurt him till eternity
Gowon was overthrown because of his carelessness
He was a young man at the time. Probably didn't appreciate the threat. Still, those were wild times!
I need you need a recommendation for a national award. Keep this amazing work of delivering our history in such a meaningful way.
😊
If Gowon wasn't wealthy, then how come Mrs Gowon would make trips to London to buy luxury items ? Doesn't compute.
You missed the part where the narrator said Mrs Gowon did not want to miss the summer sales. Also, you don’t have to be a wealthy Nigerian to travel abroad - even back then for shopping purposes.
Broke because his savings N75,000 was stocked in Nigeria and he was in Kampala.
I met and chatted with General Gowon on a long train journey in London. He was by himself, friendly, approachable and humble. He was based in Sussex University when we met.
Lmao same
No wonder he's still alive despite the war and rebellion he faced during his time in office so gowon will be considered one of the head of state that left office broke.
History is really important.
England: *Gowon left with half of Nigeria's economy*
Historyville I respect your accurate information and love you guys ...
Great job. Welldone
Your are a good story teller.
Thank you.
Sometimes it painful for someone to bring your dream to an end without your notice.
Thanks so much for your historical analysis and unbiased reviews of event in our nation, Nigeria tragectory. Kudos and keep up the good work. Very elucidating, balanced and informative. Shalom
Thank you.
Very good content - well done sir
Thank you.
All the military heads of states in Nigeria and the civilian head of states of Nigeria are clueless
The ran Nigeria down to her knees and to the abyss. That independent should have been delayed until 1970 or 1980 perhaps we would have been better off
Say what you may about Gen. Gowon. He was not corrupt . He is a good public servant.
Nice video...Do a video on Col. Joseph Garba please.
Gowon did not have much money you said but his wife flies regularly to London for shopping. interesting.
What an irony
Nigeria then was different.
The average one year salary of Civil servant was enough to save money to go for a master degree Abroad.
So General Gowon’s salary was more than enough to take her shopping 2 times in a year.
@@agadaojile8241 fair enough
I almost ask the same question
Nigeria was a richer country then.
As a teenager when General Gowon was overthrown, I remember the feeling of sympathy for General Gowon by southwesterners, notwithstanding he came from the North.
Thanks, Jah bless.
He became very very very complacent...
You reading this historical information knew nothing about how corrupt Gowon was then.He knew about the coup before his journey to Kampala. He moved enormous amount of money from the central bank account to his personal account in the UK.
So saying that he was broke on his trip to Togo and Britain was temporary. His family were all waiting for him to arrive London
Lol Abacha moved money than him still yet he's stuck on position. He just wants it to happen and avoid another bloodshed
General Gowon was a decent leader. The rumours that he went with a lot of money in anticipation of his overthrow was proved to be wrong. He went back to school and led a modest life, thereafter. He ruled Nigeria well and the country prospered. All the infrastructures enjoyed today in Nigeria were developed in his time, and hardly anything thereafter.
I was at Harrow school with his son so I believe you , they had a lot of money
They did him what he did to Ojukwu 😂. Great video
Ojukwu was a big fool and a coward
@@agberodongetinternet8651 your mama be coward. I'm sure you're not mature enough. You still believe the lies you were told by your useless elders.
@@agberodongetinternet8651 u talk like a fool, u really don't have respect
They didn't do to him like that, he seems he knows it's gonna happen and don't care
It's called Karma.
A good one. Poor gowon.
These thugs (Gowon, Murtala, Obasanjo, Buhari, Babangida, Abacha) weren't heads of states but brigands who only saw the barrel of a gun as be-all and end-all.
God really had mercy on him to still keep him alive and well till today. He never stole the nation's wealth.
He'll live to see Biafra become a nation again.
@@tochi8262 biafra will become a nation only in your dreams and deluded mind.
@sundayaito4366 it already did. You will quake in fear when it is formalised. Remember this comment, my friend.
Biafra is not a country but an idea that has come to stay. No one can kill and idea which has come to stay.
These young Naive military officers disrupted the direction of Nigeria 🇳🇬 and the country has not recovered
A biased report, how do you know he did not steal one kobo. Based on what research. I expect channels that purport to share history to stick to known fact not assumption.
Big lies that he was broke. He had monies in UK accounts. My Uncle was his senior and worked with Sardauna. Gowon made a lot of fortunes in those days. He was Chairman of National Oil.
I was at school with his son, the family seemed to keep their wealth
I think a documentary on Vice Admiral Joseph Edet Akinwale Wey is necessary. Alot is not known about this character in Nigerian history.
We'll look into that.
@@HistoryVille Thank you. I know he is a mix of Yoruba, Ibibio and Ijaw. He was also a very close family friend to the family of Ben Murray-Bruce.
Gowon stole and looted half of central bank and now cant help his people get rid OF boko haram shame on him.
But his people don't have boko haram issues ma. You apparently don't know he is from plateau state do you?
@@emkayadams5993 his people are been killed on a daily basis by Fulani X-men and it’s seems like you don’t read the news ?
This is a dangerous overthrow, Generals running, naval, air force everyone gone for just one dangerous Joe Garba to make an announcement. Joe G must have been a beast
He seems like Thoms Sankara
I can never believe he was broke.. he had access to the country's income during the civil war without anyone questioning him.. am sure he'd av received millions of pounds then as support from the Britain
Seems he knew it was going to happen
Oh yes very good leader I respect him so much
Mugu
We had young leaders then
A great leader indeed
The Butcher Man himself doesn't want Bloodshed. What an Irony of a Man. Talk about Cowardice.
@historyville nice story but you are self conclusive, UK parliament of resent talked about how Gowen stole half of Nigeria wealth, Could that be a lie ?
Well, we are yet to see any proof. The British parliamentarian that made that remark added "...so I was told", so we aren't sure yet. Proof is all we need.
"personal integrity" this man literally oversaw genocide????
Mind you #75k at the time was so much money.
Buhari is a great problem for Nigeria
He was too naive
I no like this Man either but just thinking despite knowing this might happen. He still could say this words by saying do it without bloodshed. I think he could have avoided it but he just let it happen anyway
very devilish man. he planned it , he left, sent his wife abroad and left with with all Nigeria had. he is yet to apologize for the war he caused.
@@LadyDiuto on this I agree. He need to apologise for that war. He was the one that did not honour the Abori accord and the fired the first gun against the Eastern Nigeria
Ok
Gowon wasn't given a pension?
It's always the closest one to you.
Bubu participated in most of the coups
Lol
Too passive as a leader. Should have been decisive when threats of coup was told to him.
Nah he's not passive the one that killed over 1 million southerners in the civil war. they all planned it to hand over to another north man. He was in on it...very convenient
Only a few Western countries could march Nigerian wealth during Gowon. Your story of him being poor is inaccurate
Gowon is the very foolishness
U no get senses
Mr reader go and find something better to read, stop telling us this fake Strong's
How can he save money when he spent all the national budgets to fight Biafra's.
Gowon na theif
Karma is a bitch. This is exactly what Gowon did to Gen. Ironsi in the counter coup of May 29, 1966. Gen. Ironsi trusted Gowon more than he trusted his fellow Igbo folks in the military. But Gowon betrayed Ironsi 😢 and Col. Joseph Garba betrayed him too. Karma has an uncanny way of settling scores.
What did Gowon do during the counter coup, from alot of accounts I've read, he didn't have any direct hand in it.
@@oye8211 Yakubu Gowon was actively and directly involved in the plot to assassinate General Ironsi in particular and to eliminate any external threats that may impede their plot. That was why Colonel Fajuyi was killed. Fajuyi became collateral damage trying to protect Ironsi, his guest, as custom and the traditional practice of hospitality demands. Not only did Gowon was a participant in the coup, but he also betrayed Ironsi, the man who took him in as a son.
I disagree on actively. Gowon was not active in the counter coup (that is a soldier actually firing or ordering stationed troops), as it was said after the counter that had to wait for his arrival despite the fact he wasn't the most senior officer (Brigader Ogundipe was), as the Northern troops wouldn't take order from any other tribe. If you say he was involved behind the scenes, I 'may' agree to that, even though from books I've read, online documentaries I've never seen Ironsi name brought up in that counter coup (I stand to be corrected with evidence). Infact it was what started the friction between Ironis and Murtiala Mohammed, as he felt cheated that on Ironsi assuming power, despite the fact they were both Lt. Colnels at the time and ge didn't actively take part in the coup. From what I've read it was Major T.Y Danjuma who came to arrest both Fajuyi and ironsi. I've seen list of those involved in that coup and I've never seen Gowons name there .
@@oye8211 Gowon was in Dordan barracks directing and monitoring the actions of T.Y. Danjuman's operation code-named "Aure" a term in the Hausa language for marriage. What I'm providing are unbiased and undiluted facts that are incontrovertible.
@@primeminister51 Send me a link to your claims. I hope you know Ironis and Fajuyi were killed in Ibadan and not in Lagos. You can Google list of 1966 counter coup plotters, his names does not appear. I've never seen this your your before I have tow books on my table about the 1st, counter coup and civil War, by ObJ and Ademoyega ( Among 1st coup plotter ) and I've never come across this. Provide me with link.
