  • This turned out to be one of our scariest days of our lives. We are at a lost for words and are very confused.
A few months ago we bought our dream property in the foothills of the Italian Alps. We have been working hard to renovate this old stone house into our dream home. When we bought the property we inherited a donkey by the name of Stella. She has quickly become part of our family, but today something tragic happened.

Please be kind in the comments. I’m having to delete a higher than usual amount of hate on this video. Remember that on the other side of these videos are real people, not digital punching bags.
Addressing some top comments and concerns:
yes, we have talked to a vet and several people who raise donkeys. They are as confused as we are, but the most likely answers are that she is not happy about the amount of change happening on the property (donkeys hate change). As a result she is becoming territorial of her space, such as her shelters. Her outburst was likely exasperated by the fact that she’s likely in heat. She of course is also lonely, all the love and attention we give her isn’t enough and she needs an animal friend.
No, we are not abusing her.
No, it is not our fault what happened.
    Again, please be kind.
Thank you for all of the supportive messages and helpful insights. We will update you in a future video.

Most likely it's because she's lonely and needs a male donkey to mate. Same happens with cows when they seek a partner for mating.

Firstly you have talked to a vet. That is a start But has a vet actually been out to examine Stella? If not, why not? You have animal with a sudden change in behavior, the responsible thing is to get her examined and rule out any physical reason.
Secondly, and people don't like to hear this bu t generally whenever an animal behaves badly it is indeed the human's fault either as a result of lack of training, expecting too much too fast, abuse, lack of kowledge, even inability 'think like the animal', eg.,donkey is herd animal yet kept alone. What impact might this have on her? What does it mean to be a herd animal? Well, first and foremost she is a prey animal and a herd gives protection. A herd gives her a place in a hierarchy which is important. Also donkeys are social animals. Depriving her of a herd whether donkeys or other animals leaves her feeling vulnerable and lonely. Also, Winter is here and a solitary donkey is more at risk of predators.
Lastly, there are so many kinds of abuse, keeping her solitary could be considered one form.
I venture to say no one here is a hater, just concerned with the well being of Stella and you'all.

So sorry that on top of your very challenging renovation of the house, hard physical work on the property, and everything else you have to deal with being in a foreign country , Stella is acting up 😔 You are kind, compassionate people, THANK YOU that you find time to care for her, consult the vet, take videos and share with us. This too shall pass, you will find the way in everything, it will all come together like pieces of a puzzle just give it time....and patience. God speed !🙌🙏

I was a kid that was raised with a Donkey (years ago). Donkeys are very smart. Smarter than horses. The smarter the animal, the more of an individual each one is. Stella did not go crazy. She did not seriously go after your family. If she had been serious she would not have been stopped. Stella was trying to tell you something. It could have been simply that she is the dominant head of the herd. From what I have glimpsed, you all allow Stella to crowd your personal space. That is a message to her that you are subservient to her. There may have been other factors at play. Stella is very fat. Are you certain she is not pregnant? Was there something in the pen that Stella perceived as a danger, and she wanted you out? Was she bored and unhappy that she was left alone, recently? Try to think from her point of view.
A vet check would be a good idea. Then get a trainer to give you pointers on dealing with her. This will help you decide if being an equine livestock keeper is for you, and will give your kids some knowledge on how to deal with donkeys and horses for the rest of their lives. If you do decide to keep Stella, she needs a purpose in life. That can be as simple as she needs to train your family on how to deal with donkeys, or it could be guarding a sheep or two. Perhaps you could find a neighbors sheep to host for a bit?
Listening to your description of Stella charging with her head down, sounds like it was a feint (to which your daughter responded perfectly). When donkeys really go after something with their front end, they almost always grip with their teeth and do front hoof strikes or, if what ever they are going after is light enough weight, they will jerk it into the air with a snap sharp enough to break a coyotes back. Butting something like a goat is not even close to normal behavior. Still...... do not allow the kids inside the fence without you or your trainer, until you trust Stella to behave. And you CAN trust her again. Trust her to be a donkey, that is.
I hope you are able to take the time and effort to retrain yourself on how to handle equines. I had the experience of growing up with a donkey in my family, and I would not trade that for anything! As long as everyone is safe, you have time to consider training vs. rehoming. Please, though, don't keep her, long term, as a pasture pet that you are hesitant to deal with (she will be aware of your hesitancy). That, in time, would sour her to the point of being a true danger and of needing to be put down. From the small amount of your videos I have seen, I can tell you will act in the best interest of all of your family (including the equine part).

As a farmer livestock kid, I can really agree with everything that was said here. Even house pets acts like this. It is important to always attend to the characteristics and needs of any animal, and see how you as human need to behave and react and adjust around them. That girl showed she is the boss. Good. Often movies pictures of animal lovers only show the cudly bit, seldom the control and conflict side behind the scenes. Any animal lover, carer, must always establish who is the boss. The animal, even a dog, feels safe then. It can also be that Stella started to feel you are leaving, and donkeys is NOT good at being lonely. Trust me!! I think she behaved really well up till now for being alone. Because she established she is your boss, the message could also be "don't go, stay". She just does not want to be alone. You were leaving when she behaved like that. She is your boss, you must stay. I really think in solving the loneliness problem for her, she will be excellent and very trustworthy afterwards. For your own healing, then just get basic animal counseling for you as a family, in how to stay an animal's boss, no matter which breed. All the best!! Don't worry!! All animal carers lovers need to learn this small lesson at sometime. It's part of establishing a relationship with an animal. Don't read too much into it. Animals have basic needs. Nothing is wrong with her or you. Just little adjustments. Hope you can soon find her some accompaniment. As above, they are very smart!! They need a purpose. Another donkey or sheep or anything, but not alone. She really has a very very special character if I may judge from the videos. I think she is a perfect fit for you. She also adjusted well to your characters and behaviour. So don't worry!! See it as a stepping stone to a better relationship.

I was raised in the country. Donkeys are herd animals .. they do better with other animals, especially another donkey. They get frustrated when their alone... territorial and can be swift to get "hormonal"...as was told to me when I was younger. Always be cautious...but know that any field animal might do the same. Stella is mostly calm, but perhaps she's feeling the stress of solitude. Trust me, they do better when they aren't alone. Doesn't mean another donkey....but perhaps a couple sheep.

My cousin had two donkeys, they were nice and cute but... They convinced me that donkeys are a lot to handle. Definitely not the kind of animals you just "fall in love with instantly" and decide to keep . they are much stronger than you, they need a lot of care (or at least serious comitment) , they hate being alone so you'll have to have two , they are very emotional means you can hurt them or mistreat them without realizing it, they get angry, they also make "jokes" like bumping into you when you don't expect it, and they live very long. One of the donkeys pushed my father "gently" when he was repairing the trough , my dad got hurt. Then my cousin grew up, the donkeys were ten years old, she had to leave to study, the poor donkeys ended up in my grand mother's field, then my grandma left for retirement home... then there was noone left to take care of them and my cousin was becoming a pharmacist and had other things to do. Fortunately , a donkey afficionado took them in, god bless him, I don't know what would have happened to them. They are almost a lifetime comitment. People should really think twice. NOt some present for kids, no matter how much these kids are gentle, love animals are responsible. It's puting your kids in an impossible position because they will abandon them at some point.

After one of our favorite horses got into locoweed, and tried to kill anyone that came near her, we have learned to scour our property for it.

I was raised on a farm and we had cattle, horses, and even a mule and donkey. Plus more animals. One of the very first things I had to learn as a small girl is that we needed to treat the animals as animals and show them that we were the dominant one. And you can do that and be extremely kind. In fact they have always called me The Horse Whisperer because I used to train wild horses in less than a day. But you need to remember you are a human and they are an animal. If you spoil them too much that's exactly what they do they become the alpha and that's what you do not want them to do. It's normal for them to be an alpha over other animals but you need to watch and make sure that you are the alpha person and you are alpha over all of your animals. FYI I'm a 78 year old woman who still loves the farm.

Yes but that animal’ s size and offensive moves ; of kicking and butting is by comparison a larger source of power and quick for them to be overpowered and injured . Even though she was quick thinking to use a hand signal to hault it and responding . They do not have time for Donkey Whispering to train and becoming appropriate by response as gentling a horse to obey ! ? Takes time and for parents , as kids , to have to be constantly vigilant .
And the kids need a shepherd, herding loyal companion dog first ! They herd other farm animals Ie sheep and have it in their nature automatically , to be loyal to their family members stay with them if injured ! Hope this helps as my daughter was a young horse whisperer in order for the animal to over come any issues , whether fear or spooked , by even a foreign object » UNFAMILIAR « or behavioural response to run off or charge in dominance ! ... To kicking raising up its legs , waving its hooves to become larger , for even a plastic bag on the ground the wind catches to move ! ! Your talking about animal behavior studies in animal psychology in animal sciences most farmers learn , teach their family by 4 H clubs . Or a wise farmer could share if they would meet for a reason , socially of being neighbours or helping one another .
As busy as they are ? They must go into the town or meet neighbours locally shaking hands 🙌 They cannot remain isolated nor on they mobile devices but personally join in to meet them , maybe at a church social .The bells 🔔 🔔 are calling them !

I've read the majority of the comments. I think as some have already said, working on the home, Stella not having a companion, treating and talking to her like a human, it's a lot for a donkey. There are some farm animals who need companionship and they do thrive without any human interaction except for feedings. Most don't do well alone. The very fact she's happy when she is around them, make a valid point to either get her a companion or REHOME her where there is other pack animals that would offer her companionship and not isolation.

I have a Jersey cow that is so sweet and gentle most of the time but recently tried to act like she wanted to mount me! I realized right then to get out of her paddock and give her space for a couple days. She has completely returned to her normal self.
It would be good for you to talk to a farmer who has donkeys, about their heat cycles and gain some more understanding of this donkey as farm animal rather than a pet. This doesn’t mean she can never be trusted again, but a healthy dose of respect for her “territory” and cycles will help. A fence is a great barrier for interacting safely with her for the children. She can back off if she’s in a mood.

If you can, lay a strip of chicken wire fence down or burlap to hold the leaves until they start to decompose. Also, it is a good rule of thumb to not make the bed wider than you can reach to the middle from each side. 4 foot is ideal.

Also start adding some greens (nitrogen) to the leaves (carbon) mix. If you cut some small tree and shrub branches start layering them with more leaves and you'll accelerate the decomposition process. If there are leftover vegetables from your meals that you're not going to eat, add those in too. Definitely cover the beds with netting or burlap as suggested above to keep everything in place. There's a lot of info online about no-dig.

I have felt for this poor donkey since a started watching your channel and was really happy when you mentioned a few weeks ago that you would find a friend for her. Donkeys shouldn't be kept alone, that's just cruel, like having an inmate in solitary confinement, only this animal hasn't done anything to deserve it. Without being an expert, I guess she was afraid to be left alone again.

This situation made me think of a chapter fromLaura Ingall's Little House in the Big Woods, where their dog seemingly went crazy and anytime anyone tried to leave the house, he would growl and even nip . It was terrifying for a woman alone with a toddler an an infant. She honestly considered shooting the dog as he seemed out of his mind. It was only the next morning when they went out and saw cougar tracks all over their porch that they realized why the dog was so adamantly, even ferociously keeping the family away from the exit.
I admittedly know very little about ruminants, but that is just what popped into my mind.

Two points.. Re Stella. It is never advised to keep one donkey.. They really need a companion donkey. Provided a male is neutered it can be either a male or female. The second point is that donkeys originated in drier barren landscapes and feeding them a rich diet can be lethal for their stomachs... or get them wired up. The Donkey Sanctuary will send you an information pack... But also available online..

Hello! I can imagine you got really scared when you saw Stella like this and when your daughter was in danger falling. But as an owner of donkeys, I believe there is nothing wrong with your Stella. I would strongly advice you to give her company (another donkey) because that's VERY important for donkeys. You will probably see them fighting at first - who is the leader? - but in the end they will be best friends and MUCH happier. Your loving and caring company is not enough for Stella. And even being together, my donkeys act like this now and then. But they are not mad, not unreliable or mean. Be careful with children - always - but give Stella a donkey friend, please.

Having grown up around all types of farm animals, primarily cows and goats, but we had our share of donkeys as well, this isn’t abnormal behavior. Donkeys can become very territorial and exhibit aggressive behavior. If not mindful, it can be dangerous-particularly the kicking. Those suggesting another donkey or friend are probably not far from a viable “remedy.” Typically this behavior occurs when the donkey lacks stimulation. For example, moving her to her current location (which is understandable given you are trying to bring order to your land) may have isolated her from freely roaming areas before that kept her “engaged.” A friend may be helpful. Also, getting her out for walks around the areas she used to have access to (of course getting her back may be difficult given the fact it wasn’t the easiest thing when you initially moved her to her current terrace). Best wishes with whatever your decision is. Do what’s best for Stella, but most importantly do what is best for your family. I loved/love the animals that were and are a part of my life, but there are realities of the animal world that aren’t always compatible with ours.

I know Stella is an animal, but it is so out of character for her. You guys said she was standing at the gate like she didn't want you to come back down there. • @rendabullock3503
      @rendabullock3503 Год назад

Agreed. She may have been trying to protect you all from a venomous snake! Since shes older and more experienced around that part of the country, she may have seen one in her paddock. One way for her to be clear about that is her "serious" demeanor towards you! Ask your neighbors if they have snake issues certain times of the year.......and yes about considering a pasture friend for her. They are emotional creatures and need others of their kind. Also, I agree with cutting her back on the grain. I grew up with horses and too much can make them "hot", as in too spicey.
I hope you can work it out with her, but be firm. She must respect that you are the boss. A kind and understnding one, but the undisputed leader.

I had 2 donkeys, they played real rough, zoomed around braying, kicked each other and went for each others feet. They went to the donkey sanctuary in Devon, Uk, they wore collars with their ID on with a second tag on the hoof as the donks often pulled the neck ones off playing. My donks would go into attack mode if a dog came into field, stamping on them with front feet, trying to bite and ears pinned back. I think Stella was over excited, she wasnt biting or pinning here ears. Get a halter and lead rein and find out how to lead her properly. She will respect you more.. I’m just now starting to follow your story and I’m excited to binge and catch up to current events… as far as livestock goes, we have had many different farm animals in the last 30 years including a donkey and a horse right now. I’ll just say this wise statement I was once told by an old horseman and uncle, “a horse is still a horse”. Basically no matter how much you love them or want them to be a pet they are still animals and livestock. They all have different personalities and donkeys are protective and territorial plus you factor in the hormones. You can care for them and love them but always always know they still animals and when it comes to little ones you can never be too careful. We have had our horse and donkey for years but I’m always aware when the littles are around. Hopefully she can get a companion to protect and herd and an area that is hers and separate from the fam and all will be well for you all. ❤

I was actually already surprised when I was seeing you so close with the donkey. I thought you know something I don't.
Frankly speaking the terrible thing isn't actually kicking but they bite so and so strong and they can hold heavy weights into the air just by biting and when they bite something they don't release.
they could kill many animals that you won't believe (wolf, hyena, sheeps etc.). and even experienced shephards may not predict when their donkey will get crazy and attact a sheep or so.
so please be very carefull with donkey(s).

You need to contact the vet, and get a diagnostic on the donkey health!!!

Sorry to hear about this incident, I really love to watch your videos
I am from the Caribbean Islands and I grew with donkeys around our environment,
Donkeys will get very wild and irritated especially when they need a male and would sometimes break loose and runaway
So we were always told as kids to not get too close to them because they will kick

When you related the sudden change in Stella's behaviour, of an animal which went berserk...it was terrifying.
Thank God nothing happened to our precious Chloe.
From the safety point of view, Its best to consult a vet, the soonest as to how best to deal with such a situation .
Rather risky keeping Stella as she cannot be trusted any more.
I love your family, the way you have overcome the shock of being attacked by an animal which till now was docile.
I love the way you work together, raking leaves, reworking the interior walls, cooking...such a nice, close knit , loving family. So much to learn and appreciate the way you stay together.
Bless you with all the happiness in the world.
Much love to Alexa, Chloe. Heather and Bradey. May God keep you all safe always.

For those that are being unkind to you ignore them block them. Also there is no such thing as being too kind. Keep being kind to Stella but definitely keep her on the other side of the fence. You should contact other people who have donkey sanctuaries on RUclips and ask them questions.😢❤

Find her a new home with someone that knows how to handle her. You are clearly out of your element. Horse's/donkey's etc., play and when they play they run full speed at you and spin and kick and rear. She needs to be with a handler that can re-teach her spacial boundaries. Best of luck Stella...

I wont blame you, I just think you've got a lot to learn about having farm animals. I am glad to see that the girls are physically ok from what happened.

I’m impressed! You are wonderful parents. Your girls love to help . Many parents don’t give their kids a chance to do so.
As far as your donkey goes. She needs a friend. A baby donkey would be cool.

Crikey, poor Stella she looked very stressed and frightened and/or cross! I hope the girls and you and hubby have recovered from this shock. I guess its just a reminder that she is a big strong animal with a mind of her own, I hope you find out more about what might have caused this. The no-dig garden sounds very interesting.

Without knowing if there is a medical cause to Stella's behaviour the one thing I can tell you is that you have behaved with Stella in a way that tells her she is equal to, if not in charge of, your family. It is important with equines to establish good ground manners. I also notice that you are feeding Stella grain. Mostly Stella should be eating a good quality hay. Hay keeps an equine's digestive track in good working order. Stella appears to be a bit heavier than is ideal for her so for the time being she may not need any grain. Also given her diet her issue may be digestive, perhaps ulcers. Adding a magnesium supplement to her diet may help calm her down. These are issues that should be diagnosed by a vet.
