The bug is that the game is trying to expend a strand melee charge while using a normal melee.
To show this, normal melee the air then spam your melee ability. The ability has a high casting speed. As you will see, its a lot faster than hitting 2 normal melees. Whats happening is that the game is trying to expend a charge while doing a normal melee, allowing you to chain them until the game recognizes the error and uses the default melee speed. I found this a week ago but only found it reliable to do when I had melee charges, and didn't have people to test with.
Indeed. If you have auto-melee on and run out of strand melees, it'll auto-cast uncharged melee at high speed. These effects may be related, as the auto-melee seems to start a bit faster than another needle would have.
Yeah that makes sense. Ive found strand melee will go off a lot when i use normal melee
Auto-melee and melee binds are a bit buggy. The game sometimes uses the charged melee when I'm jumping and want to do a regular one instead.

that would explain why people seem to be able to 2 melee's in half the time i can sometimes. I have noticed that a bunch of times over years when playing in crucible where both up melee near same time but i can't melee a 2nd time while other guy is almost instant.

How i wish Titans felt
The underlying cause for this bug has likely been around since launch, it just hasn't had any opportunities to show itself until 3.0 subclasses came out with very uniquely coded melee abilities. It causes uncharged melee to have properties of the equipped melee ability, its the main reason some melee ability visual/audio will still happen when you have melee energy and do an uncharged melee.
Arcane needle has more attack speed but bungie put countermeasures in place to prevent it from applying to uncharged melee. There is a ghost melee protection system that is not mixing well with these countermeasures, the ghost melee protection requires the opponent be in a lunge animation, not just a melee attack. (The sword block thing is just an addition to the system because sword block makes melee lunges janky.)
the point in the pve melee animation where "lunge" turns into "hit" is hard to see, just have to get used to it. some enemies like centurians have melee attacks that do not lunge.
I had it happen a month ago and clipped it. For the life of me I couldn't replicate it though. Knew it was something to do with arcane needle getting faster melee speed then translating that to an unpowered melee.
Looks like the thing I was missing is that I got meleed back - resetting the cooldown as Cheese said.

This bug was present when strand first came out i think, but it was a lot more consistent back then

I've been doing this in crucible for a while now. It seems to also happen when someone melees you, I have my binds different so I want to use a normal melee vs a charged one it works differently. The result is you almost double slap the opposers

Right i was wondering how a f****king warlock one shot melee me in crucible yesterday 😅
It's kinda interesting. It technically doesn't change the interaction that much. To pull it off, according to this video, the Warlock would have to hit the first melee, then get meleed back to reset the cooldown. So either way, you were losing that melee slap fight unless other factors came into play.

I found this glitch shortly before TFS dropped. Had no clue Wtf was going on.
I know how to fix this game. Just disable CheeseForever until a fix can be found. 😂
Some people will call this a bug, other will call this a guardian with world champion boxing belt.
Bungie: Due to their power level being over 🗣️9000 we are disabling Warlocks. To even this out until we can send out a patch, we have also limited Hunters to one super per week. Use it wisely guardians. Titans will have their bubble increased to the size of Zavala’s house to help protect hunters in the meantime.
Since it's been uploaded to RUclips I might as well bring up when the glitch first appeared and how to best replicate it in PvP.
First it appeared when they fixed a bug related to warlock T-Posing because 9f the melee.
This is after the fixed the first iteration of the bug.
To have a more consistent time doing it in PvP you need an elevation change of some kind when the lunge happens. Either from jumping or falling.
I only bring this up because I want the melee to be fixed properly and I'm really tired of being forced to use charged melees when I use a melee bind specifically for uncharged melee

I did that accidentally in Trials, went through an enemy Titan barricade and did like 6 million melee's.
The question has to be asked: How many punches do you need to kill a titan blocking with a sword using bastion?

This is what every titan/warllock player looks like to me in pvp triple melee while my hunter struggles to put off a second melee

In my experience it seems completely random regardless of the opponent having a sword or not which is already extremely situational i have auto melee turned on and have separated powered and unpowered melee on my ps5 controller it just kinda randomly happens tbh but man is it funny to suddenly have my melee spammed when i use it which is more common in pve specifically after final shape release

This seems similar to a glitch when strand came out, if you had strand warlock melee equipped you could uncharged melee then jump and do it again quickly, it could kill people in the crucible almost instantly for a while before it got patched
