    A stunning rendition with crystal lucidity of this pulchritudinous yet demoniacally challenging piece!
    It is said that in order to strenthen his fingers to play this monstrosity, Schumann come up with a device that crippled his fingers and therefore ruined his pianist career.
    When I listen to the recordings of Pogorelich and Criffra, the endings struck me like "why on earth end this piece by banging? Schumann would DEFINITELY ABHOR it!"
    Glad to find out that there are pianists also share this feeling!

    This has got to be up there with the best recordings of the Toccata. Has the musicality of Lhevinne but also the technical bravura of Horowitz.

    One of the best voicing and phrasing I have heard in this piece. Like, the part at 4:13 has so much emotion, almost sounds angsty.

    Love the way you handle the voicing in this piece, especially around 0:25 onwards, where the top voice of the bass sounds exceptionally clear. Now that I´ve thought about it, I think the voicing is why I like Lugansky´s recording wayy more than Argerich´s, whose voicing unfortunately suffers as she just breezes through everything

      @@L1102 Based is a generally positive descriptor, particularly prevalent in younger and/or frequent internet users. As Collin M. pointed out, the opposite of “based” in current internet slang is “cringe,” which functions identically, but as a negative descriptor. Both of these are quite recent developments in internet slang.

It is such an inspiring performance full of character; I have never heard it played this way, with technical brilliance and musical inspiration. A very interesting performance, I must say, and it inspires me to go back to working on this piece.

    • @pianovirtuoso1000
      @pianovirtuoso1000 Год назад +7

      It is honestly impressive to be able to play at this tempo, but his technical quality is excellent. Such a criticism would be more justified if he was sloppy in terms of precision, but this is not the case. This is a musical performance and technically brilliant. Remember, Schumann was not exactly a stable man; he finished his life in a mental hospital.

    • @GICM
      @GICM Год назад +5

      1. the tempo is literally allegro
      2. pretty weird that you find Schumann to be typically slow

    • @francoisdyckmans1210
      @francoisdyckmans1210 Год назад +1

      Yes I agree that it is allegro but the metronome in mid 19th century was s!ower than today and this toccata played too fast (which is an outstanding piano performance) tends to hide the music, to my opinion. As an example listen to Gilels or even Richter. Nice to speak about music anyway ! 😀 Kind regards

      @@francoisdyckmans1210 on the metronome point i see too much recorded evidence that contradicts any double beat theory that you seem to be implying. in fact it confuses me that you mention Richter since he plays just about as fast as Caleb (in his studio recording at least)-Caleb even plays it with more legato than Richter so i don't see your point about musicality. as for Gilels i also don't think he plays this that much slower either.
