  • I had this video on the plate for a while and I'm happy I finally got out and tried this film!
Has anybody else given this film a spin before?

Andrew, the film in the Funsaver is called Kodak Gold 800. It's a decent film!

I think it has been confirmed somewhere that Kodak Gold 800 (funsaver) is the same emulsion as Lomo 800.

I saw this from Ikigai camera out of Australia. But I don't know what it is based on. Either way they look similar!

Hey man really enjoyed those photos thanks for sharing! How do you usually meter on the tube and shadows with the m2? Your exposures look right on! Cheers.

Thank you! I either use a phone light meter app or sunny 16. A lot of it is trial and error. I have found that I can shoot some of the train stations with 800iso at f5.6 and 1/60th or 125th and it works out. I think for all the underground shots in this vid I used something like that.

Interesting for sure, and the results are surprisingly nice. In the U. S. at B&H for example, the Funsaver 800 ($14) is $1 more than a 35mm roll (36) of Portra 800 ($13). So it appears to be a much better option there.
Always enjoy the photo walks - and always amazed by Japanese architecture - all over the place but must be a blast to shoot. And the overhead wires.
    Cool video, thanks.

Thank you! yeah I was looking at these at another store and they were almost $17 so at that point I may as well buy Portra. To tell the truth the architecture here is one of the reasons I ever picked up a camera. I love it.

Awesome experiment, and surprisingly great results! It almost seems to have a little cinestill-esque halation on the extreme highlights too.
Also I absolutely love the aesthetic of the building you focused on a bit from 6:00 onwards. I walked around it for like 20 minutes trying to find a good composition to really show it off in all its Blade Runner glory, but wasn’t happy with any. Really dig yours though, well done.

Thats awesome you found that building while here. This was my first time seeing it and yeah its rad. I actually went back at night and took a photo or two with my RB cause I wasn't all that satisfied with these shoots. I'll post to insta in the near future.

    That opening!!
Pretty good film, gotta wonder though if this isn't basically the same thing Lomo uses for their 800 film. Would be interesting to shoot them side by side.

Thanks Phil! It crossed my mind! And what some people are saying in the comments, could be the same emulsion.

I'd be tempted to scan it neutral and make adjustments and profile myself just to see how it looks. Did you try any other profiles other than portra 800?

I am sorry for my directness, but this is just stupid. A complete waste of resources (plastic, batteries, work). Absolutely not in the real analog groove, but I guess you‘re too young for this anyway. If you can‘t afford Portra, then buy cheaper film, or shoot digital.

    • @CLOCKCOUNTRY

Thanks for your directness. I agree it is wasteful, but these types of cameras always are. What do they do with them when you take them in to get developed? It could be said though that these little cameras are keeping film alive for people who are not so invested. I think my local shop sells a lot to the people who are not going to go out and buy a (now very expensive) camera. Going forward I'm not sure what will be cheaper than Portra, options are becoming limited and film prices are becoming wildly expensive across the board. If worst comes to worst, I will shoot digital and save film for special projects, in the end I'm mostly interested in image-making as a whole no mater the medium.
