Hi, Anja. I just saw this video today (YT says it was posted 3 months ago). I am so sad that you lost your beloved horse friend and partner. I am glad you shared about it and that you are allowing yourself to take time to grieve. I remember when I had a puppy when I was 12 years old who, sadly, followed her mother onto a country road to chase a truck carrying chickens to a nearby processing plant. Sadly, while her mother was fine, my puppy was hit by the truck and died instantly. I still remember how strongly the grief and sadness of losing her hit me, and I am sure there are more feelings when one has to consciously make a decision to let an animal be put to sleep. You were brave to do the right thing to release your beautiful horse from pain and disability. Many blessings to you. Be kind and nurturing to yourself. I love your channel for your regular content, and I am glad that you felt you could share on it about something so personal and difficult, as well.

When i was a very young girl I brought home a kitty and wanted to keep it. Ok. The kitty had to live outside. It was my responsibility. I had to be the one to feed it, be kind to it, make sure it had shelter etc. And if it was injured, or old, or seriously ill, I had to have it 'put down'.
Now at 80 I still remember what my dad said. "Remember, our animals are not volunteers."

I am so sorry. My heart breaks for you. This was very timely for me personally. Last Monday, I went through a very similar situation with my beloved dog. He had a wonderful life and was constantly at my side. Very suddenly, last Monday, I noticed he started to have extreme pain. I took him immediately to the vet. Tests, x-rays, then finally surgery. Expecting a good report, after 3 hours in surgery, I received the devastating news. I'm thankful I could be there to tell him good bye, wrap him in his favorite blankets and take him home to be buried. Emotionally, it may have been easier to let the vet handle everything, but he was such a loyal, loving companion, I felt I needed to do that final service to him. As hard as it is, I'm allowing myself the room to cry and grieve. My family and friends have all been wonderful and supportive. I'm so thankful God has blessed us with animal companions. I know one day, I will have another dog, but it's important to take the time to grieve. Thank you for your openness to share even the hard times. That is real life.

I am so sorry for your loss, Anja. Such a beautiful, sweet boy. I lost my boy, Sandro, almost 10 years ago in similar circumstances. One week he was learning canter pirouette, the next he was leaning against the wall, any wall, so that he wouldn’t fall down. When the vet and trainer both are telling you that there is only one compassionate way forward, you do that. He was my boy for 14 years and I miss him always. Listening to you tell your story makes me realize that I haven’t fully faced this loss. And I need another horse in my life. Thank you for sharing.

May God bless you and be your comfort in your grief.
My husband says that horses are like large dogs and we've lost a number of our dogs over the years. It's hard. Our last elderly husky past on the day after I entered hospital for my emergency spine surgery in 2022. My husband coped alone. That was hard to not be there for him and for our dog. If I wasn't four hours away from our home I would have checked out of the hospital and walked home to comfort my husband.
I send you love and hugs. May your memories of your horse always make you smile, even amidst your tears.

I feel for you. I had to put down one of my horses because they developed a severe case of EPM I had to make the decision quickly. The horse could not feel his feet. He couldn’t hold his head up, but when he was laying on the ground was sort of OK, but I knew that he couldn’t live his life like that. Other people in my Barn had used medication‘s to quiet the EPM, but it seemed like it only lasted for a few months and then they were putting the horse down. The Vet did not think that was think that was an option for my horse due to the severity of the case. I do not regret putting him down, but I miss him terribly and frequently will still cry even though it’s been over two years I believe horses have a special place in our hearts we ride them. We work as partners and they keep us safe and we trust them,I think you did the right thing and it’s obvious that you really loved your animal.❤

I wish I could give you a big hug full of comfort. It's so hard to lose a pet. They are family. I had to put my 32 year old Paso Fino down on my birthday in 2020. My two other boys were mourning his loss and each dealing with it in a different way. My 30 year old Quarter horse stopped eating. To get nourishment in his body, I had to hand feed him and fill him full of oils and supplements to help his appetite and to put weight on. He was losing weight so quickly and muscle of course. My vet and I tried best we could but he just didn't want to live. He was such a silly and funny horse and because of that his nickname was Monkey. But after the loss of his buddy, he became mean and angry toward our other Quarter horse. It was such a sad time. On my birthday 2021, exactly a year after I loss my Paso. As soon as I got up I looked out the window to check on my boys as I always do and Monkey was down. My vet, my husband and I tried for over an hour to get him up. He didn't want to get up. My vet told me what he thought was best for him and I agreed. So he passed on the same day, a year later as his buddy. It was a tough year because in September of 2020, I had to put my 16 year old Dachshund down and in November 2020, I had to put my 14 year old Dachshund down. Only nine weeks apart. I had lost four of my babies in exactly a year. It's still hard to deal with as I cry and type this. I'm thankful for each of them. They brought so much joy to my life. I miss them so and I am reminded of them each day. Thankful for the memories. My heart will be with you. I'm very sorry for your pain. ❤

First of all, thank you for sharing this hard decision to put down your beautiful horse. Just found you for your bread making. The fact that you are also a horse enthusiast is an unexpected bonus! Just today I have hired a trainer to assess my 20-ish year old Percheron who has fallen to his knees twice with me and his vet check when I purchased him 5 years ago warned me that he may have neurological issues wherein he could fall on me. Your process of deciding the safe outcome to your situation with your horse has helped me immensely. Thank you for sharing your loss, and inspiring me with your strength. 🙏

Losing an animal you've bonded with is a heartache and can leave you just as devastated as losing a family member. People who have owned pets only to have this happen go through the same thing. You did the right thing; otherwise, what you said just might have been that way, and your decision was the best one for the horse and everybody else even though it was a sad decision to make. He lived a very good life. The replacement horse sounds like a very good.idea.

I’m so sorry for your loss. My little sister has always been a horse woman. Her first word was “horsey”. When she was diagnosed with scoliosis it was equestrian riding that was her solace. As soon as she was making her own money to support the expenses of a horse she acquired a retired blue ribbon pacer horse that would not allow herself to be bred. The owner was her then boyfriend’s uncle’s horse and he told my sister to get the horse off his land or she’s glue.
She retrained her to equestrian ride and was the national champion in 1988. She would have one two or three horses at a time. It was very painful to have to say goodbye to each and every one. Especially when it was due to illness.
Then the having horses after 38 years she said goodbye to her last horse. She chose not to continue with horses as the bond is so strong that the loss is great.
Keep your boy in your memories and rejoice in each moment you had with him. ❤

Horses are close partners- much sympathy for the horrible and necessary decision.
For me, it was the cat who was born on my lap and lived on my shoulder. She looked fine, but unrecognised kidney failure had already taken her sight.
She’s under the apple tree now, since she was obsessed with round things, surrounded by pebbles inscribed with loving words and all her favourite things, placed by all who attended her funeral. This seemed to help all those who loved her.

I deal with death a lot because my brother died in 2021 at 35. Life cut very short. There are lots of deaths we are certainly oblivious to. There is no amount of guilt for not being sad or sadness itself that can compete with your ability to bring the thought of them being alive back into your mind. When you realize how that state of mind was and what it gave to you, you can take it with you.

So very sorry Anya for the loss of your dear horse. Pets are part of the family and I can relate with your feelings.
As you say Life is not always easy especially when we have to take difficult decisions. I am sure you did the unthinkable to keep Donnie at your side but came to the right decision as painful as it could be.
Keep the happy moments Anya, there is a lot to be thankful for.
    Big hug for you.

I am so very sorry for your loss. It’s so hard when we , as pet owners, have to make those decisions . I have been through this MANY times. I have had dogs and cats my whole life and am in my 60’s.
We fostered. And many were elderly… in poor health to begin with. My children sadly had to learn this is part of being a pet owner. And when they are blessed to go on their own in their sleep… it is heartbreaking, but also can be a blessing. It’s much harder when you have to decide… 💔💔😢
    Again, I’m so very sorry.

It's so hard to make those choices. It sure hurts. Our animals are family. We love them. You made a decision for the best. Have a good cry. You need to do that. Take care. ❤ I had a cat the family adored, just a cat, but a big part of our lives. He got very sick, we spent a lot of money but it couldn't cure him. We made the decision and we were with him at the vets when he died. Probably brain tumour. Two weeks later my husband was diagnosed with a brain tumour. He died 2 years later. Devastating. Soon after we adopted 2 kittens. We have found them the best therapy. ❤

I am so very sorry for your loss, Anja. The pain of having to say goodbye too soon to a beloved pet is almost unendurable. I am going through the same thing as you, I will soon have to make a decision about my little cat who has cancer, although she has had 14 good years, but I am just waiting for her to fail. Healing will come in time, as I am sure you know, I am thinking of you.

I am so sorry for your loss. I am not a horse owner but I am an animal owner. Losing an animal is heartbreaking and there is a very real grieving process. We make the very best decisions that we can. I agree with you regarding the responsibility - it is a privilege to own an animal and part of that privilege includes making the difficult decisions. I have been through this a number of times with my children and I so firmly believe that caring for an animal teaches children kindness, empathy and responsibility and it also teaches that there will be difficult times during life Bless You!

Allow yourself to grieve and feel it fully and over time things will lessen and become less harsh. We suffered the loss of our beloved cat about 2 years ago who died from cancer of the spleen and it came on very suddenly so we made the decision and it was all for the better of her not for us.

    Dearest Anja,
I am truly so sorry. You tried your best and your big guy knew it. You will never forget Donny. You will have that grief and feelings it’s okay. The beautiful love you shared with your big guy. I had a great horse once. My mare had him on April 23,1972. I broke him , showed him and loved him. My big baby was a big bay QH. I loved him so much when I had my daughter, he would let her walk all around him and even under him for a stallion. He was very calm. His dad was just like that also , bloodline from the kings ranch in Texas. My daughter rode him also and he was always gentle with her. I guess he knew she was my baby. My husband on the other hand tried to ride him a few times and he did very well with him. Only thing is I had to hold his head for him to get up on him. He didn’t seem to like Males. But only a few people rode Sundance beside myself. I wouldn’t let them ride him or miss treat him in anyway. I had him till he got sick at 28 years I had him. I had to make that decision to put him down. He had congestive heart failure, and there was no cure for him now in helping him, but he lived a good life. I hated I did that, but he was suffering so much he looked into my eyes as I was holding his Head I could tell he was telling me it was time for him to go, and he would be OK. I still cry I still miss him. You have that one , and for one time only! I think.. and I was blessed to have him in my life. It’s OK to grieve And your heart will still ache sometimes. I had three horses, but I have a road many many many horses in my time. I can no longer ride due to a BAD back. But that doesn’t stop me from loving horse events, or watching them on TV or in person. I can relate!❤❤❤❤❤ to you and the family.

I am so sorry for your loss Anja. I too have lost working partners and for some reason, they are much more difficult to let go than the average pet. (having lost many beloved pets over the years, I do not negate the pain of losing a companion animal, just that a working partner has usually involved a lot more time and effort on my part) All the time spent working and improving and in my case, finally reaching that point of great partnership and trust... There is terrible loss involved. Although it is some time after the fact, I hope you are managing your grief better every day. You are absolutely correct, we have a responsibility to the creatures we decide to have in our lives. I am glad you were able to make an informed decision and do what you knew to be the right thing for your horse. It is one of the most difficult decisions we ever have. Thank you for bravely sharing your story. Thinking of you and your lovely boy. Nancy in Canada

I’m sorry for your loss, I truly understand how you feel.
I recently started watching your RUclips channel and I really like everything you share with us.
I am a believer and believe that God made me click on your video today.
We lost our dog a week ago, we had to put him to sleep, he was 12 years old and got him when he was a puppy 🐶 , we bought it for our son who was a child then.
All the emotions that you are going through, we feel as well, and even though our pet was a small dog, no comparison at all with a horse, which I know are very special animals, he was the joy of our household.
I’m glad you talk about grieve because I think we all need that time to heal . I wish you the best , you are an intelligent person and although I am not German, my mother in law is of German descent and in some ways you remind me of her.
Take care of yourself, God bless.

You're right. When we bring animals into our lives we open ourselves to heartbreak when certain times come. We then have to focus on the fact that we did the best it was possible to do under really tough circumstances and they knew they were loved and cared for. Take care of yourself and when you're ready, you'll begin again 🥰

Grief can be so unbearable at times. There is a bond that seems to happen that turns into mental telepathy. It is something that becomes spiritual and it is what I call a Blessing from the Great Power of our God. That bond is Love ❤️. It goes beyond speech, of any language between the two involved. Continue to grieve, take walks on your land, cry your heart out. But deep down you know you did the right thing and that should give you Relief. It was a lot to bear so when you feel the relief, release yourself slowly from your beloved horse and eventually God will let you know by bringing in another sweet horse. You will start thinking about it until you can’t stand it. Then you’ll know the time is right to become a good steward to take care and love one of God’s sweet horses again.
By the way, I gave up on making sourdough bread for the time being. But I’ll never say never.
