I met Art at a convention as a kid. I asked him to sketch a pic of Longshot on a blank page in my graphic novel. I realize in hindsight I was asking him to work for free but he graciously said “ok but it won’t be a very good one” and sketched out a quick but awesome Longshot face. I still have it. Thank you, Art!
Jay and Miles brought up the point that this series was pretty much the genesis of the 90s X-Men/Image style and I'm inclined to agree.

My favorite artist of all time!
I got to meet my childhood hero, Art Adams, for the very first time face-to-face a couple of years ago. Now, I never get starstruck, but shaking hands with the GOAT and suddenly I was a studdering fanboy. :-)
Art is one of my favorite X-Men artists and just favorite artists in general. This work was crazy. In hindsight it almost has a Manga vibe.
Have an Art Adams children of the atom x-men poster, huge, found it when I was cleaning stuff out and immediately asked my wife if I could put it on the wall.... she was not a fan.
What's so fun about y'all's videos is that I'm close in age to at least Ed, so a lot of what he talks about being excited over as a kid parallels with my childhood.
Art Adams was a favorite of mine back then, though I can't say I've enjoyed his more recent stuff as much. This series was so much fun, though! It was also the beginning of my admiration of Nocenti, who I've long been a fan of.
Art Adams went through a few phases in his art style. I also like his old stuff more -like Longshot, the X-Men/Asgard special/annual, and his X-Men Classic covers -especially the Wolverine which is used in marketing and stuff. He was my number one artist for a while back then; then to be replaced by Jim Lee when Art's style changed and began drawing less.
@@brianng3414 Totally! All that stuff you listed I loved!! Jim Lee also became a favorite of mine around a similar time as you, probably. I was also a HUGE fan of Sam Keith around that time, from his covers for Marvel Presents and into The Maxx which would blow my eleven year old mind when I read it, lol.

Arthur Adams was my favorite. I was frustrated that he didn't do a regular monthly title. His art work was so beautiful and detailed. What I didn't realize was that he was a slow artist which is why he didn't do monthlys. So sad. You know I can see where Todd McFarland may have gotten his influence for his style. Arthur's rendering of Doc Strangein the Longshot series looks like it could've been drawn by McFarland.
I love seeing anything about Art Adams.
I haven't gone through all your videos but have you guys done the Rocket Raccoon miniseries that Mike Mignola drew? That's another good flashback comparing to where both character and artist are now.
@cartoonist kayfabe - will you ever do an analysis of J Scott Campbell's Danger Girl? He is a huge Art Adams fan and while DG is often derided as empty cheesecake it's one of the most fun comic series in a long time, wears all its influences right out in the open and is the best summer blockbuster movie adaptation we never got. It's also peak JSC, not just in the character work but in the storytelling and attention to detail with locations, machinery, vehicles, weapons etc.
Adams being viewed as weird seems cruel...by comparison to people like Leifeld or even early Kirby. Adams seems so articulate and refined. Love his stuff..his art was crisp and detailed...Love me some Art Adams! He and Michael Golden need more spotlighting!..Thanks for your video..quick and thoughtful critique..you guys Rock!
so arthur adams's style is basically responsible for like 95% of american comic book art in the 90s. i heard his name mentioned before but i never knew who he was. but after seeing these examples of his work, i can see his influences in a lot of comics i that i used to see and now. even with their page layouts. im mind blown. i always see people reference the image founders when they speak on that 90s style, or anything that looks like it. but it all came from this guy. so many people copied his style it's insane.

It's all still very impressive to me. I had the first 3 issues and they blew my mind. Tried to take in every detail of every panel. Then I got the trade paperback and the printing was too thick. It made the detail overly busy instead of the perfect balance of the lines in the floppy issues (basic defects aside).
Arthur "Art" Adams is my favorite comic book and graphic novel artist, colorist, illlustrator, inker, and penciller ever since the early 1980s. His Marvel Comics comic book Longshot is probably more than likely his best comic book and super hero character work ever.
Wouldn't it be great if they made a movie series featuring the amazing & complicated story of longshot. Who doesn't like this guy???
3:03 Thank you so much for showing me early Art Adams. I aspire to get to his level...and I thought, man what do I have to do, study more Anatomy? Layout better? And His Artwork is good or decent here. That shows I dont have to have it all figured out by now. Just put in the Work. Page by Page.
Love your vids, guys. I have to say one thing though, so please bear with me. Yes, there is the Michael Golden thing, but I've always believed the one component that everyone seems to miss in Art Adams' work is MARSHALL ROGERS. Look closer at his work on X-Men: The Asgardian Wars. Someone please give Marshall his due! His style is all over McFarlane's early work too. McFarlane's Mary Jane is a more stylized version of Silver St. Cloud. Marshall had me hooked at eight years old with Detective #471, and I was never the same. That's just this Old Fart's opinion, anyway. Keep up the great work!

I regret passing on this Longshot mini series back in the 80s but if I would have looked at it I would have loved Art Adams work on this.

you can see this comic as an artist developing their craft on the job until their style is fully formed. I had this comic in back issue form from dollar boxes, then sold it to golden apple 5 years ago

I think I see a bit of Kaluta and a bit of Simonson as well. Adams was drawing from a lot of influences beyond Golden.
I remember seeing this on the shelf! It was so cool, though I only read the first issue. More recently I got it in TPB form.
Jim - would one way to keep the rawness of the art be to try new things you’ve never done before or doing things you don’t feel comfortable?

You spoke about Strikeforce: Morituri. Loved that comic. It had it's ups and down, but the core of the story world make a great programme on Netflix. Re Me Adams, he bought his own style to all that he did. Often copies, seldom bettered. His figure work always looked real and so well observed.
amazing. I would love to see that micronauts artists edition. I had an issue of micronauts but I couldn't appreciate the art at the time and now IDK where it is.
I just picked up the Micronauts Artist Edition today, which is incredible. They definitely need to put together one to showcase Adams' work.

I could've bought those back in the days but I ignored it.
Why'd you skip issue #5? Question, wasn't there a rumor for a minute that Cable was a future version of or related to Longshot, you know with the whole flashing eye bit?
And the same thing with Gambit when he first showed up cause he was throwing cards and people thought "Hey, theres another guy who throws things - Longshot!"
Hmmm... I think that is just more Rob Liefeld stealing original ideas... hahaha... The flashing eye and the knife pouches...those look cool, let me put them in my character...heheheh...

This art doesn't sing to me, and I love Art Adams' work. However, those covers are gorgeous!
