Might be stereo typing here but I gotta say it. Canadians are the golden retrievers of humans. The way this guy smiles and the patience to explain everything from such different angles. Amazing videos. Thank you!
Thank you so much, watching your videos is teaching me how to repair a gutted out townhouse to include destroying the closets. My husband is 70 and I am almost 62. We are both retired marines and I believe your videos about Sheetrocks and tools are helping us do what we were hesitant of doing. Once again thank you.
Yes, please, more videos for the beginner!!!
I did miss one thing - what prep do your tools need before you can use them the first time? Smoothing rough edges?
Jitterbug is helpful to save your shoulders
Mr Jeff, I have viewed your entire series of putting the sheetrock up, and all the steps up to ready to paint. I have an old pole barn here in a swamp near Gainesville, Florida that I'm making a sewing room for my wife of 43 years. I have already put the interior walls up, wired the electrical, and put in sub flooring. I've got the sheetrock up at this point, and I've got more holes and cracks than "Carter has liver pills." I've never done taping and mudding before, so I think I'll do it your way. I like your way of instruction. You have a kind face. Thank you for your tutorials. God Bless You!
Might be a bit late for you, but a automatic taper will really help. If you are doing a barn, it really is worthwhile to buy some specialty tools.
Always teaching us DIYers to be self-sufficient in a good way! Love your helpful videos so much!! I 👍😎
Glad you like them! Cheers!
Jeff, Thank you so much for your drywall videos. I just finished a basement project and I can not belief how great it turned out.
So enjoy to watch your videos and learn so much as entry level person. I really appreciate.
I'm so glad!
I just got a maintenance job, and after watching your videos you made me look like someone who knows what there doing. Granted I'm still learning I appreciate your videos, soon I'll subscribe to learn more. I'm a visual learner, and my wife is like your watching his videos again.....
You are the best instructor EVER!! Thank you!!
My wife and I appreciate the tutorial for those of us who need skills.
Jeff, You are an amazing teacher. You always not only demo HOW to use proper techniques but best of all you explain WHY we do it that way as well---the science or logic and that is wisdom. Thank You Rich
Cheers Rich. happy to help!
Nice technique on removing screws and using the handle. I'm one that has made those 3"-4" mud circles for that drywall sticking out 🤭 or sandpaper trails, but no more. Thank you.
I like to think im way past the "DIY'er" stage but l always still find your videos super helpful, so well spoken!!
Jeff, one of your best! Awesome info, I learned so much!
AWESOME! Video for other trade like me . I'm eager to try to DO patch up after learning watching this .
Great explanation for all the tools and professional demonstrations.
You do a wonderful job explaining everything. I am a DYI homeowner and have completely upgraded my old knob and tube 1890 home to putting in a new boiler, and spending a summer vinyl siding with making all the trim breaks buying a used break for $700 and selling it at the end of the summer for $600... beats the rental prices. Anyways you remind me so much of my self its uncanny. I love to teach others because its rewarding. I don't have any formal training other than being raised by my Grandfather and Uncle who both were in building homes trades so I paid attention because it was interesting, Honestly I wished you were around when I watched a lot of Bob and Norm. Anyways keep up the teaching and I have watched a lot of your videos and became hooked on RenoVison DYI and enjoy them very much.
Chuck Cox
Thanks for the video. I was surprised not to see the larger more common drywall knives, similar to the 4-5inch shown
Understand the corner and mudding technique too. One side and dry so, there's no dirt in the mud doing the other side. Less is more. 🙂
Great video thanks for the good helpful information! I am getting into updating our home and these videos have helped me a great deal and have saved money from doing it ourselves.
Thank you! This helped me finish my living room ceiling.
I enjoy watching your videos. Thank you so much for your help! 👍
Hi Jeff! OLFA style knife trick... I leave my blades long... super convenient when I want to extend the blade and bend the knife flush to cut flat along a wall or clean a corner... then retract to cut routine. To keep it razor sharp, I have a discarded diamond rod ... kitchen style ... like $16 on Amazon or Ebay.... few swipes with that and razor sharp. Also... my blades last a year or more by resharpening... the ten blades that come with the knife will last a lifetime! You have helped me learn so much! I just review your vids before tackling the impossible!!! Subscribed! Thanks, man!
Hey Jeff great video! A drywall vid that would be great to see is new to existing and what some good tips for how to tie a larger repair into existing. Thanks for all that you did for us here in TX!
Like the boxed paper tape idea for corners! Going to be repairing a tall recess that leads to a skylight in a bathroom, so the stiffer construction of this particular paper tape could make it a better solution.
Great work Jeff!!
Im loving the low key critique he's giving his son for the mistakes 😂
Great video with much useful information. Thanks you for sharing.
Everytime I watch this, I learn something useful that I missed the last time I watched it.... Thx for these tips.
As always thank you your videos are so helpful.
definitely a home handyman guide. I use the same sort of tools, but have a very different technique to be sure.
On your advice I picked up a drywall hawk, and it's been a game changer! I can't imagine doing any amount of drywall work without it.
Good stuff! I can't understand how folks want to use a tonka toy instead of a machine designed for production.
I go around first and fill large gaps first.Use the back of the knife to push in non tapered edges.Jeff ,thanks for the portion on proper angles you hold the knife and trowel for each phase of the process.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you
Thanks!
So helpful, thank you!!
Your a master at this stuff
Thank you
Perfect 90 is an awesome product
Thank you very much for this video
I'm planning on renovating my office space in the house I bought a few months back. They got these thick trims in the corners, saggy wood textured paneling on one wall and a ugly textured ceiling. Turns out all that thick trim everywhere was covering up the fact they didn't even try to mud or finish the corners at all. They are just inch gaps in the drywall behind them and I'm gonna need to put in a lot more work than I was expecting. At least I have this channel to get me up to speed on how everything should be done.
It helped a lot
You da man, Jeff!
Your kids job is better than my best day already. Can’t wait to see them in a year.
Some really useful info here, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks, good info, gef
Thanks Jeff great video! My question is when you add a little water in your pail of mud, do you dump it out the next day or mix it in with the mud?
I need to do some drywall repair in a room with carpet. Of course I would use a drop cloth. Most of your drywall vids are on a construction site. I have to be much more careful. Would using a tray be better than a hawk to minimize spills? Will the 4x10 still work or would I have to use a 10in knife? Having carpet changes the process like cleaning the tools etc. Maybe a video addressing non new construction would be helpful. Your videos are the gold standard for DIY homeowners.
Great video
Jeff is the contractor dad we never knew we needed
thank you🎉
You're welcome 😊
I am making a tiny house out of a 420sqft. Building and installing shower, watched your video on it a few times you do great at instructing and have giving me confidence and information to try it myself! And I havebeen watching your videoes on sheetrock, mudding and tips ! You said to put questions in comments, so here goes! The sheetrock was done prior to me getting building and in moving have bad spots cracks and some walls painted, I had to remove to upgrade wiring! Here is the questions, can you mud tape etc. Painted walls?
And cracks , how do you do them , , have not seen in your videos yet, saw one you said you sprayed something on torn or scratched places, but can not find name of stuff you spray!
Anything you can do to help with going behind poor mud job or torn or scratches and especially what to do or tricks when doing painted walls, or if it can be done!
Thank you for all your work it is exstremely helpful and appreciated! And you help me stop getting ripped off by industry, but they do so much to not sale us complete products , never get everything needed and they try to trick you if you do not look close and I have noticed they even say 1 thing on outside and on inside find out it will not work as is or without other parts! Really bad and vague information, almost criminal!
Thanks !
DID i tell you that you are FANTASTIC ? LOVE your lessons. sorry i couldn't find how to repair a crack on the wall , right at the 2 corners verticals.(my luck) thanks anyway
You rock man
Take it from me, I have going been to drywall school, Jeff is really good at drywall. I haven’t seen a thing he does that would be bogus in the trade.
Very good videos,
Although I don't see anyone do this today, my grandfather built himself a box that held mud, a spool with paper on it. You'd draw the paper which would slide under the mud in the box, and out the other end where you would would pull it to the length you needed, and tear it off. It'd be coated with a film of mud, which could be slapped directly on the wall and pressed or imbedded directly onto wall. It was super fast as I recall and didn't require you to pre-mud the wall for the paper.
No problem
If you’re using a brand new 4” knife give the corner edges a sand so you don’t rip and tear every piece of tape you try and bed
Doom Guy would downvote this...
If you’re inexperienced, or get the 4inch knife with 90 degree corners
Hi Gregory Brown if u have a brand new drywall knife u never sand the edges of a new knife for drywall the edges are designed to be sharp so u get perfect corners especially on your smaller knifes your problem is u don't have enough experience it takes time me to get the feel of drywall knifes something this guy y forgot to tell u taping is an art and Jeff dose not compare to a real pro big jobs should be left to the real pros Jeff is good enough to do his own work but he is no where as good as guys who do taping for a living
Great!!!
I've been watching your videos to be better prepared for our renovations on the new house. Most of them I've watched twice so I retain the information. This video in particular though, something stuck out to me at the 24:18 mark. With all due respect, was that a fart? Either way, thanks for what you do. You've helped us tremendously. And I got a hearty giggle out of what sounded like a fart. 😊
Killz oil primer can is one of the oldest and still used by many for any kind of drywall repair this product is just amazing
Love your videos! Where did you find your angled drywall knife?
its the lowkey grilling of the sons learning the job that gets me lol my dad was like that too years later im like damn he sure grilled me a lot and gave me crap but hell if i cant set plumbing and concrete like a landscaper lol
The tip on only mudding one side of the corner at a time makes a lot of sense. I was driving myself crazy trying to do both sides at the same time.
Just to make sure I'm understanding him correctly - Jeff is saying to do one side of the corner at a time. Let the one side dry thoroughly. Maybe use a fan or a vacuum to speed up the process. Then come back the next day to finish the other side of the corner. Is that how it should be done?
Always hav CA small. Plastic sharps container for blades. Had 1 guybpoke himself in the rear he learned
Jeff, most olfa knives have the cap on the end that is slotted to allow you to insert over blade and snap off. Please wear safety glasses when snapping the blade like you showed. Having been in the construction industry and safety engineers for over 30 years safety is very important. You do a great job and I enjoy your channel.
Hi buddy thanks for all your help and expertise. I have accomplished and learned a lot watching your videos. Quick question what are your thoughts on buddy taping system. Its like 39.95 on Amazon. Please let me know. Thanks once again
Hey Jeff, i cannot find the video where you comment about this product you use to sweep the floor after working with drywall. Anyway they dont sell it here. So I used ... used ground coffee. It is ideal if it keeps a bit of moisture because it works like adhesive to the dust. It is perfect for sweeping when you are fixing drywall inside finished house (with finished flooring).
Jeff, your videos have provided such good info over the years, that it gave me the confidence to do my own kitchen remodel (which turned into stripping everything down to the studs because I kept finding more problems). My mud work is far from good, but things are coming together. After painting, I can see some flaws, but I plan to go back and repair them. Cabinets and flooring are not installed, yet. It won't be perfect when done, but I'm taking my time to do it the best that I can. Thank you for all your hard work in providing these detailed videos, and for educating those of us who are DIY-ers.
More great stuff Jeff. Thank you so much. FYI, I'd like to help you out at Amazon, but I cannot click/open the products (to purchase) through your recommendations pages. Is it broken?
First off, love your videos. Second, I used the Kilz on exposed brown paper and it is leaving a rough texture behind. Is this normal? Do I knock this down, sand, or just mud over? Thanks!
New to this channel. Freaking love the details in the videos. I am learning so much.
Can you make a video of how to mud over painted walls. Large area!
Beautiful. Thank you!
when you remove the bottom it should have a slot to use to remove the part of blade you want to remove so you have control of the blade so it doesn't go flying!
Was hoping for more details about types of tools, like for example, what the heck is blue steel? What type of sanding blocks should I get? Do I really need so many knives or can I just get by with one?
Excellent video. Jeff these kinds of videos explaining 101's is very helpful to homeowners. It gives a high level understanding of how things work and then can be tweaked to their application. thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Can you please make a video or comment on how to lower a playhouse that is 5ft off the ground on posts to ground level. It is 10x10 fully sided with roof and could use some advice. Thanks
Thanks Jeff. With my new cottage, I will need lots of these tips.
Hi Jeff, thanks for the great videos you've provided to us novices.... I'm wondering if you ca answer a repair question??? The walls in my garage are 25 years old and the joints have not failed yet the tape(on the edges) is separating from the wall. I want to clean up these issues and am wondering if tape is needed at this point? Can I just remove the tape and clean up the joints or do I have to start by clearing out the joints and then start over??? Thanks for your help!
You want to remove the tape, score it as necessary so you don't pull a bunch of extra stuff off. Check out Vancouver carpenter video on fixing bubbles.
Do you recommend PVA on new drywall or just a paint/primer?
can you use plaster paris as drywall compound....? i already have for small patches/skimming... but will it hold finish ?
Hey so this is completely unrelated but I could use some advice. So sorry in advance
If I'm attaching a dishwasher and washing machine to my kitchen sinks out-pipe (The pipe goes straight down under the concrete floor after the kitchen sink), am I better with double input hose connectors Or A standing water pipe? or does it not matter and should I just use whatever best suits the space
PS i live in the UK and either is allowed but not sure what's best?
Thanks
Did the California patch for the first time on a repair job after a frozen pipe repair, worked great. Thanks for the great info!
Can you go into more detail as to why you apply muf on the side of the knife? Are you applying mud to fill the crack or to give the tape some sort of adhesion?
I've noticed some explanations like this missing from your more recent videos. Is one of the things that always helps me a lot. Explanations why you do something a particular way.
When would you choose fibre tape over paper tape? Or are they interchangeable?
Hello Jeff,
I have a question about the trowel that you are using. Is this a flat trowel or a curved trowel. I am kinda struggling with what trowel should I use. I picked up an anvil finishing trowel but looks like it’s for concrete. Looking forward to your response
Hey, do that kilz product gets rid of the water leak stains? Specially on the ceiling!?
Another great and helpful video. Thanks, Jeff! ...from Idaho
Glad it was helpful! Cheers to Idaho!
Thank you so much for all the info. I would have loved to have this sooner lol but I can now fix all the little problems
Happy to help!
Hey Jeff, can you put this video in the "Drywall" Playlist please❓❗ 🙏
Thanks much‼️🙏👌🥰
Thanks I appreciate everything ure teaching
So nice of you
Jeff, does your drywall trowel have the concave bow?
You Rock... I love this Jeff...
I only use the 5 minute mud at work and it needs little sanding after I’m done
6:45 how to fill crack with mud
7:00 how to keep tape from getting bubbles
9:30 how to fix tape blister
18:00 how to tape/mud corners
20:30 4x12 Nella Trowel
Thank You.
Jeff hi bro, can we use paper for concrete corner thanks
I seem to get ugly results. I think my mud started to get a little dry and leaving some rough spaces. I did try to wet it a little, but after awhile still had the same issue as if I was working on the area too much (trying to get it perfect) and it had dried a little and I keep adding more mud. It's truly an art and takes practice.
