Canada's Plain and Standardized Appearance (PSA) initiative changed the look of cigars and other tobacco products in Canada, including:
Packaging: Cigars must be sold in standardized, brownish-green packaging with large health warning labels and no distinctive features
Bands and boxes: Traditionally banded cigars, tubes, and boxes were removed from shelves by April 1, 2022
The PSA initiative was created to reduce tobacco consumption and protect younger populations. However, some say that the initiative could complicate operations for small businesses that sell premium cigars. They say that the initiative could lead to reduced product availability, additional costs, and the need for small businesses to downsize or close.
Canada also taxes cigars at a minimum of 55% on top of the cost of the cigars.
