FILM DESCRIPTION:
Stanley Kubrick's take on the Vietnam War follows smart-aleck Private Davis (Matthew Modine), quickly christened "Joker" by his foul-mouthed drill sergeant (R. Lee Ermey), and pudgy Private Lawrence (Vincent D'Onofrio), nicknamed "Gomer Pyle," as they endure the rigors of basic training. Though Pyle takes a frightening detour, Joker graduates to the Marine Corps and is sent to Vietnam as a journalist, covering -- and eventually participating in -- the bloody Battle of Hué.

As a Vietnamese, I must say the scene is really aesthetic given the fact that it was all shot in the outskirts of London. At the beginning of the clip, the smiling black man on the building is actually the advertisement for Hynos toothpaste which is really popular in the former republic.
As an American I must say, aesthetic doesn’t mean what you think it does.
Realistic, authentic, accurate, detailed or believable is more like what you are conveying.
@@jaxturner7288 oh thank you, i didn't know that.

The photographer's hands shaking while taking photos of combat was very well acted.
I never understood how photographers can go in and take photos during these major battles. Take Robert Capa, he took the famous photos of D-Day at Omaha Beach. The amount of bravery it takes to go even after the first few waves to an active combat zone armed with a camera is impeccable.

Screw you cowboy , screw ALL you guys !
I love how in the first minute as they approach, there's not a single edit. If this movie was made today it would be changing angle every 2 secs with shaky dutch angles and CGI explosions. Kubrick was a true master at making you immerse into the battlefield he's presenting you.
:(
Filmed in location, LA
There's lots of good war movies made nowadays with single shot scenes. 1917 was all one shot. Don't make it out like all war movies made now are horribly edited, that's just bullshit.
I think you're just watching the wrong modern movies lol
Bro you simply have bad taste. Watch good modern war movies. 1917 and Dunkirk have great long shot editing. Private Ryan and Black Hawk Down use chaotic and quick editing to their advantage.
Mother came around that corner like a gangsta
To think all of this was shot in the outskirts of London…
Yeah well definately looks like East/South London to me
Nah , no enough stabbing or accid attack

Beckton gas works.
I thought this was a random street in Detroit 🤔
One of the best scenes in movies.
The low camera running with the Marines & the confused drum/percussion sounds just add to the chaos of this scene.
What i love about the opening scene is not only the moving shot but the realistic squad search patterns, the movement in sync was euphoric

It's pretty refreshing to see an urban Vietnam war scene. Not the stereotypical jungle warfare with US soldiers bogged down
Thank you! This is what makes FMJ the best Vietnam movie, the war was not just fought in the jungles. This battle changed the game for us, it became clear that we probably were going to lose the war
And the final scene in that burning building is more terrifying than any jungle warfare scene
Best Vietnam War movie, in my opinion
Apocalypse Now and Platoon are better, I think.
@@ryangreene2159 platoon isnt better
@@mrsinister8978 The American Film Institute would disagree, ranking Platoon on its list of top 100 greatest American films. Full Metal Jacket isn’t on it. Platoon is better in the sense that it’s not satirical, but rather a touchingly intense portrayal of the war through soldier’s eyes. Full Metal Jacket may be more well known in the pop culture department, but Platoon is widely regarded as a better movie.
@@ryangreene2159 I'm not convinced that the critics get to choose which movies are the best. A lot of it involves politics and sometimes there's a massive discrepancy between what the viewers see and what the critics see.

One of the best movies featuring THE best drill sargent! RIP Robert E. Emery.
R Lee Ermey, you maggot.
In the Marine Corps, they are not Drill Sergeants. They are Drill Instuctors. They are called Drill Sergeants in the Army. Referring to a Marine Corps Drill Instructor as a Drill Sergeant is blasphemy in the Marine Corps. Thank you.
*Ermey
R. Lee Ermey
He was so good he got fragged.
This is pure genius. I can't quite tell whether the backing is drum beats or bombs and machine gunfire and I think that was Stanley Kubrick's intention, to show the tenseness of this battle.
The best scene in Full Metal Jacket, just because of those drums! I believe that ambience with those drums really exists for war veterans.

Yeah it was filmed in an abandoned gasworks in the East End of London bc the architect of said gasworks also designed a lot of downtown Hue hence their similarity
@@Internationale7 Thanks for confirming that!🤟
Filmed in London.
@Miles Almond I had heard that Kubrick hated to fly hence the filming location, which was very convincing.
I may not remember this quote or who said it. I think it was a US general describing the Tet offensive saying that there was no greater instrument of war than a pissed off 18 year old United States Marine.
Adam Baldwin in this move was awesome. Animal Mother is my favorite character. He deserves his own movie!

I love this movie. The only nit-pick I have are the marine’s gear. They can get rare M51 boots but not M55 flak vests or M2 JFAKs
Helicopters are British too

I think it’s the Only Vietnam war movie focused on urban warfare.
One of my favorite top ten war movie ever made.
One of my favorites. Classic.
as an old salt who remembers this conflict like it was yesterday, it's a helluva hoot taking in all these holllywood depictions. and, this one especially takes the prize. these producers and writers obviously see 'nam from a different lense where infantry troops all have each others' backs and sling racial slurs at the third world enemy who are fighting to beat back their superpower invader. the vietnamese as i recall were educated, thoughtful and didn't just fight with ak assault but had air power support provided by russia. furthermore, the 'enemy' title didn't just pertain to the v.c., but to u.s. troops against themselves targeting the commissioned ranks. hanoi with their own 6 million + k.i.a. troops deserved to win that war
Hanoi invaded the independent South, Laos, and Cambodia twice.
Best Stanley Kubrick war movie ever. It's one of my top five favorite war movies (along with Stanley Kubrick's and 1987). And I also recommend Casualties of War with Michael J. Fox and Sean Penn (which is another movie about the Vietnam War) if you can upload it along with the new Nobody movie with Bob Odenkirk, Natural Born Killers with Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis, The Quick and The Dead with Sharon Stone and Gene Hackman, and The Juror with Demi Moore and Alec Baldwin.

Someone edited out the sound of chirping birds. You could hear it clearly in all the versions when Kubrick was alive.

Do you like Stanley Kubrick or are you just happy to see Matthew Modine?
One thing I'll say about this movie. It reinforces that idea that the Americans did all the fighting while the South Vietnamese military did nothing. Every time when something thinks about Hue city, they think it was an American victory. In fact, ARVN (Army of the Republic of Vietnam) committed more troops and lost twice the amount of casualties than the US marines did in Hue. This is not to downplay the American importance in the battle, but people need to remember that in the Viet Nam War, the US lost 59,000 men while ARVN lost 250,000 men. I hope that people will learn to appreciate that sacrifices that ARVN gave for their beloved country. RIP to all US and ARVN fallen soldiers in Viet Nam.
Australia, South Korea, even Taiwan shed blood there as well.
The set is truly breathtaking
That damned music still haunting all these years later.
Fantastic! Kubrick rules!
I just wanna say that the music in this scene is rly well done 👍
As one who served in the Marine Corps infantry, I will say their movement up the road was so not tactical and very unsafe. Yes. I understand it is a movie, so nobody was at risk of truly dying. I'm just saying the way they moved is not a very safe way to advance. Notice how one person would set, and then another would come around them from the inside, crossing over in front of the person who is set to provide cover. Suppose the person who is set to provide cover fire, now you have friendly fire. The way they should have moved is with the person advancing going around the set person to their outside, not crossing in front of the set person.
You're right! The way they are advancing up the road made me think that the threat is off to the left somewhere. There is added confusion because the camera dramatically pans left at the end of the road. But I think that the building they exchange fire with is actually ... straight down the road the whole time.
Also those troopers were usually taking set position beside cover and not behind it.
I see the very same thing in online war games like call of duty and such.
The boot camp portion of this movie was great. The rest of it, as far as Vietnam, is bullshit as far as I’m concerned.
Keep in mind these are draftees, not professional soldiers. It’s all one giant clusterfuck.
In this situation
Sniper is the best weapon

Everybody says this was shot in the Outskirts of London but the truth is that they shot it in Detroit. They actually didn't shut anything down. They told the actors to just keep on going
"Uhh,Mr Kubric,we just lost the guy who was to say the next big line."
"No problem. We'll just have it look like he was killed & his next NCO takes over."
"Ok guy,in this scene, your leader has just been killed but you have to keep going okay? Let's take it from there annnd ACTION!"
This scene was definitely shot in the East end of London near the Beckton gas works not far from where I live today in the Isle of Dogs.

I just found out that the scene was shot somewhere near London, surprised me how realistic it is (I'm a Vietnamese)
Oh and it's actually Huế and not Hué but sure, Vietnamese is hard as hell for foreigners
This scene summed up the Vietnam war. All the firepower in the world (relatively speaking) couldn't save that soldier from a determined lightly armed enemy.
If the US had fought the war without restrictions and invaded the North it would have been over in weeks.
