  • In this video I build a Mutable Instruments Shades triple attenuverter module for my eurorack system. I'm using it in combination with a doepfer envelope follower and a VCA to create a sidechain compressor for my synth bass and drum machine setup.
In this video I build the "Shane" PCB from modular-addict, but as you'll see I found it unsatisfactory from a layout and documentation perspective. I think a better alternative is the "Mutated Shane" pcb v2 from Pusherman, which looks to have been updated a little bit: pushermanproductions.com/prod...

How have I never thought of soldering the power connectors by attaching them to the cable before?! Game changer

Tough build with that board! I like to solder on the IC's first with SMD. That way I have more room to the get the iron in there for drag soldering.

If you have a PCB that comes with it's CAD files you can load (or import) it into kicad and have that build you an interactive ibom file, which will make assembly SO much easier. In this case the original was most probably an eagle .brd file, which kicad can import directly, other formats, in my experience can be exported from it's native application as an eagle .brd then imported into kicad.

Many thanks for an interesting and informative video! I'll refer to your guide when building my DIY Shades 😎
Whilst doing repair work, you placed aluminium foil over some parts ( 8:40 ). Was this to prevent them from being desoldered due to the hot air? If so, couldn't kapton tape have been used instead?
