Hi Giles, you timed that upload perfectly for my morning commute into town! That looked like a nice walk, nice camp and nice bit of food topped off with some wine and the pitter patter of rain on canvas. What more do you need! Them Victorian brickies new what they were doing didn't they! Great point about dropping by the church yard for a top up of water. I often carry a small adjustable wrench with me on my camps so that I can access the mains water that is often connected to the Cow troughs around my way. Thanks as always for sharing 👍

Thanks Giles another quality vid. I ve been lucky enough to race many of the off road marathons and ultras that use the south downs, there is a timelessness about the landscape that I find fascinating, your videos remind me off those happy times, thank you.
Great to hear from you ultrarunner - appreciated as always. Blimey, running up and down some of these hills !!! Total respect to you Buddy. But I understand where you’re coming from - it’s beautiful and on the right day you even forget the pain …… maybe…..Cheers 😊👍
Ah that's great, Giles, another wonderful excursion. Thank you so much for sharing! I knew I was in for a treat as soon as I saw it in my notifications, but I had to wait all day for a suitably peaceful, uninterrupted half-hour, so that I could properly treat myself to this relatively recently acquired indulgence. The great music and calming voice, along with the lush scenery and the interesting side notes about local features are inspiring and good for the soul. There's only a couple more days now before I'll be out on my own for two or three nights, after the virus got in the way of my plans the last time I took some time off for this. In the meantime I find your videos to be the next-best-thing to actually being out. A lot of the people I watch online seem to miss the point a bit of being out there, by being too focused on either their equipment or themselves, but I like the way you explore, showcasing the scenery with your subtle voicings and thoughtful filming, it's hard to beat! Please keep them coming, and well done.

Lovely Jubbly Giles. That Chalk Pit was far larger than I had envisaged. Lime Renders and Mortars were used here extensively in country houses as much as we White Washed our walls. Folk here still use it and paint the bottoms thirds of their fruit and other trees with it against crawling bugs I assume. British Builders frown upon the stuff, but they don't know about its flexibility during extreme temperature changes and a lot of attributes too. Anyway, I digress; another great camp, always look forward to watching your camping videos and again, came just at the right time as I sat down to eat my Cod Liver on Toast with grated red onion, Greek Kalamata Olives and Bulgarian Feta Cheese. Enjoy.
Thanks once again Robert and great to hear from you. Hope you and yours are keeping well. You are bang-on about lime as a useful building material. Not just more flexible but breathable compared to cement too. And the simple, cheap white wash (which I’m interested to hear is still being used where you are) is naturally disinfectant too ! But now I’m under pressure to time my video-release to coincide with your next meal 🤣😂 (which sounds very nice by the way). Cheers Budd 👍

Hello again my friend it's great to see you do another video I enjoy it so much.Your videos really pick me up. I've been waiting for your new video and I saw it about an hour ago I was talking to a friend of I hope everything's well with you I am smoking in this Arizona desert it is very hot!. As I told you I should be going to Colorado and I think we're going to go camping in eastern Wyoming in Yellowstone national Forest if everything works out. I don't know if you're on Instagram but if you would just like to chat a little more I sure would like to chat with you sir. Be safe in your travels your friend David
Thanks David and great to hear from you again. I can just imagine that it is incredibly hot there in Arizona - it’s a State that seems to have that reputation over here. I hope you are doing well too. And looking forward to your camping trip - sounds like it will be a wonderful place to go camping - so much more space than Southern England 🫤. I hope you manage to get it done. I’m not on instagram (yet!) but a few people have asked in the comments - so I might get around to it one day !!! ATB Budd 😊👍
Nice 1 G.B 👌🏕 for a second there, when the hip flask came out I thought it was gonna end up like your other video with the whisky 😬🤣 always a pleasure watching your vids, keep up the great work 💪👍
Awesome video as always, really makes my day to see a notification that you posted a new one. Really enjoy the history you highlight. Always enjoy seeing the WW 1 and 2 history on RUclips. Please keep it up and safe travels. Cheers
That was an interesting sojourn through the countryside there Giles taking in both man-made and natural historical features. I'm constantly fascinated by barrows, tumuli and red hills, real physical connections to our ancestors. Another great video that I thoroughly enjoyed watching 🙏🏻 Cheers, Paul 👋🏻
Cheers Paul - great to hear from you and appreciated as always. Hoping yourself and friends have been able to enjoy the improving weather. And remember to keep dancing Buddy 😂🤣😂 Take care 👍
Great little film, I wander all around Amberley to Chanctonbury ring etc, it looks quite similar, I noticed you removed the bolts you added to your fire bowl?
Thank you very much. Appreciate you watching this and commenting too. Yes, I have bolts on the veg steamer ‘fire bowl’ which use wing nuts for easy removal for packing away. Also when there are plenty of rocks about I stand it on those instead because this offers even more protection to the ground 😊👍
Thanks Steve. Appreciate you watching and commenting. The bag was got on eBay. It’s an ex Croatian Army haversack - was really cheap and pretty much 100% natural fibres 😊👍
Thanks very much. When filming maybe around 12 miles but less if I am hanging out a while at a geographic or historical feature. A lot more are possible (if I want to !!!) when you are not filming 😊👍
Good evening just subscribed on the back of a few recommended vids from you that I have really enjoyed. I subscribed to a couple of other UK outdoor channels who at the time had similar subscriber numbers to you and they are well on the way to 500k subs now. Just thought I should prepare you for the fame and "RUclips millions" coming your way 😁
Thanks very much Craig. Appreciate you watching and commenting. Looking forward to the RUclips millions…….but not sure I’ll sell up, leave the family and head to Hollywood ….. yet 😂🤣😂🤣 Cheers 👍😊
Great video to watch just before bedtime. That chalk pit was interesting. I’ve heard of them. Are there a lot of them in the UK? I watched a guy in another video setup his tarp in a plow point configuration, but he didn’t use a ridge line like you do, and it sagged a lot. Another good one Giles. I’m slowly catching up. Take care, my friend. 🇬🇧🙏😴
Thanks very much Steven. Appreciate you going through all the videos and taking the time to comment. Yeah, we have a lot of old chalk pits - the rocks were fired in the production of lime - mainly for lime mortar (but other uses too) before cement. It was required in great quantities to supply the great structures of the industrial revolution 🍺🍺👍
Great video, Giles. I know the area as it’s where I’m from. I’ll be back there in July from New Zealand for a month and I cannot wait to wander in the countryside.
Great vid I'm in the south of England beautiful country side I have the same problem with water sources as I'm the chilterns and there's not alot so a village church is a saviour for water really enjoy you vids maybe one day you will visit the chilterns got some great history here a few large Saxon forts which is great atb Giles jay
Thanks for watching and another kind comment Jay. Appreciated. Yeah, the Chilterns look good - I’ve seen a few YT vids 👍 You’re right, I do need to expand my wild camping into different areas etc 👍
Thanks for watching and commenting Phil - appreciate it. Yes, I found your vid and think it’s a very useful, and cost effective, idea. As you probably notice, I like to arrange some kind of adjustable pot-hanger in order to have a bit of heat control. (I loved the beaches in your vids - think I know where they are !) Thx again 👍
Love your videos. Your kit and setup is simple and consistent (not needing to try every new thing!). I’m curious about 2 things. Your gaiters and how low your pack rides on your back. I’ve never gotten on with gaiters mostly due to heat and sweating and not much other benefit. How do you find them as you always seem to have them on? And does wearing your rucksack low feel more comfortable and give more air flow to your back? Again, curious why that technique. Thanks again. Great videos, look forward to ever more this summer.
Thank you very much. Glad you liked and thx for commenting too. I tend to put the gaiters on every time because I end up scrambling across country very often and they really help in throwing off brambles etc without tearing trousers or worse ! Luckily I find they don’t make my lower legs too hot in summer. Yeah, the pack hangs very low. I thought about customising it to bring it higher but as it is pretty comfortable I’ve left it as per original manufacture. I really do need to start researching some small packs which have a decent harness and waist belt to spread the load a bit better. Options will be restricted being it must be natural fibres 🤔Cheers 👍
Just watch your latest video it's nice to see you out again love the video m8 this mite sound silly but why don't put any thing round the sides off your tarp to stop any cold breeze come from the sides m8
Thanks for watching and commenting Keith. Very observant point you make there - sometimes in colder and/or windy conditions I do kick up the leaves and debris around the base of the shelter. But as this setup sits quite snug to the ground I don’t always bother. Cheers 😊
@@gilesbinyon I just noticed this and how you said it really cold at nite though by filling in the gaps it wud help with the cold m8 and keep you a but warmer
Thanks again for watching and commenting. The knife was a good deal on Amazon (less than £25 I seem to remember). It’s made by Western Knifes. I think the blade is stainless but incorporates some titanium. I haven’t upgraded cos it’s been great. Just regular stropping seems to keep it razor 😊👍
Wonderful video Giles👌👏 2 questions..... 1. Love the knife. Make/model please? 2. Ticks are rife here in Cumbria. Any probs/prevention tips? Cheers and KTF🙏
Thanks very much as always Marty. Great to hear from you. Not sure the model of my knife. But it was really good value on Amazon (less than £25) some time ago. It’s Western Knives which is a US company I think. It’s stainless incorporating titanium ! Re ticks - a good vid is from UK Wildcrafts and it gives 5 tips to avoid them. I think this is very useful. But I haven’t gone down the Deet spray route yet. I suppose I’ve just been very lucky not to need to (so far) 👍Thx for your support 😊
Thanks for watching and your support. The fire pit is actually a vegetable steamer !!! Real cheap but robust. Knock out the silly little legs and replace with longer but removable bolts for easy packing. 😊👍
Hi and greetings from Finland. I just recently found your channel and I have to say that your videos are very good and nice to watch. I like the traditional gear approach, it's something I try to do too! What's the backpack you're using? :)
Thanks very much Niko, I’m glad you like the videos. And nice to hear you are also trying the traditional type of equipment too 😊 . The backpack was got from eBay. It was a Croatian Army Haversack. It hangs very low but I haven’t changed this because it seems quite comfortable (with about 10kg). It was only £14 (about €16 I think) and it is almost 100% natural fibres - just a bit of Velcro. Cheers 🇫🇮🇬🇧😊
I'm not criticizing, just making a remark. I think the backpack is too low on the back, causing the weight to be concentrated almost entirely on the lower back and this is not good for the spine. I think I should adjust the straps and pull the top of the backpack higher. Just saying...
That's a good point. However, that old-school gear doesn't have an external / internal frame that allows one to transfer the majority of the 'weight' then down to the hips onto the integrated waist belt .. the shoulder straps being then more supportive than load-bearing. Using this type of kit, my experience with lugging heavy combat loads through the Southern African Bush .. one's preferred, most comfortable setup was what was the most comfortable one for each individual. One eventually found it 😏.
I think it’s a nice set up for the type of minimalist kit that he is using. Not like many moons ago when I was with the U.S. Marines and had to hump my gear plus ammo, extra water and a Mortar round or three. Then a full frame pack is warranted. Other wise keep rocking what you got.
Thank you guys, there’s a lot of good comments and well made points there. I take on board all of them. Yes this pack (ex Croatian military I think) does seem to ride very low even with the shoulder straps fully tight !!! I thought of customising them but as it seems comfortable (so far) I have left them as per manufacture. I tend to be thinking along the lines of Thomas - just finding what seems to work for me. I would certainly consider a small civilian pack if I found one which was reasonably affordable (this one was about £14 I think) and also made out of non-synthetics. I would love to be able to transfer some weight to my waist with the correct harness/frame. I need to start looking !!! Thx again everyone. Being comfortable hiking all day is so important to enjoy the outdoors 👍
Thanks very much - appreciate you watching and commenting. Do you mean the backpack? - it’s an ex Croatian Army haversack which hangs really low but seems comfortable and it is 100 % natural fibre except for some Velcro 👍
@@noblesavage149 sorry 😂. I got the knife from Amazon for less than £25. It’s been great so I haven’t bothered to change it yet. It’s made by Western Knives and is stainless steel combined some how with titanium? I think the design is more of hunting than Bushcraft. It is a hollow grind but with a distinct edge bevel. Regular stropping seems to keep it razor sharp 👍
Always carry more water then you think you are going to need. Better to have it and not need it. Then need it and not have it. I live in a state with very little surface water. Specially in the heat of the summer. So even say on a 10 mile day hike. I will take 4 quarts of water with me.
Thanks for watching and commenting James. And you make an extremely sound point. I just got lazy and instead of carrying the extra load relied on stopping off at a church grave yard - but this is not always a guaranteed option tho 😳 Cheers 👍
@@gilesbinyon Yeah, but as you drink the water, the weight does go down. I live in a dry part of the US, so I've always carried more water then I think I will need. Whether I am hiking or biking. Keep up the trips. Love the country side.
Thx for watching Dan. The pack was an eBay buy. It’s a ‘Croatian Army Haversack’ I think. Small and oddly long shoulder straps but comfy and 100% natural fibres except for a small amount of Velcro 😐👍
"I'll leave these by the fire to get a garnish of ash." LOL. Keep 'em coming Giles.

@@gilesbinyon ..... I was down the south-west coast late spring a couple of years back. Stunning it was. They do a magic trick with apples down there too. They turn them into a liquid which makes your legs go all wobbly. 👍

ATB Budd 😊👍
Awesome video I'm enjoyed watching thanks
Thank you so much Amy. Glad you enjoyed 😊👍
Nice 1 G.B 👌🏕 for a second there, when the hip flask came out I thought it was gonna end up like your other video with the whisky 😬🤣 always a pleasure watching your vids, keep up the great work 💪👍
Ha ha! Yeah, the hip flask brought back a few (hazy 😂) memories !!!
Thx for watching and commenting again my friend 👍
Awesome video as always, really makes my day to see a notification that you posted a new one. Really enjoy the history you highlight. Always enjoy seeing the WW 1 and 2 history on RUclips. Please keep it up and safe travels. Cheers
Thank you very much for watching and that really great comment. Glad you enjoy the videos and thx for the support 😊👍

Thanks for the effort, glad to see you didn't fall over this time after the tipple.
Ha ha! Yeah, that hip flask did bring back a few hazy memories 🥃😳👍
Trying to work out what bag you are using as it looks interesting once again nice relaxing video
Thanks Steve. Appreciate you watching and commenting. The bag was got on eBay. It’s an ex Croatian Army haversack - was really cheap and pretty much 100% natural fibres 😊👍
Another great vid Giles. How many miles would you cover on a trip out.
@@gilesbinyon Giles, your replies to my comments are also greatly appreciated. Not all people respond to comments. Good 👍 job, my friend. Cheers 🍻
Great video, Giles. I know the area as it’s where I’m from. I’ll be back there in July from New Zealand for a month and I cannot wait to wander in the countryside.
Thank you Adam. Appreciate you watching and commenting. Hope we get some nice weather in July for your trip 😊👍
You must be somewhere further along the same chalk ridge as me, looks just like home! I won't ask ;)
Ha ha ! Thanks for watching Jim. 😉😉👍
Excellent! Well done. 📝
Thanks very much James. Glad you liked it and thx for the comment - appreciated 👍

Thanks for watching and another kind comment Jay. Appreciated. Yeah, the Chilterns look good - I’ve seen a few YT vids 👍
You’re right, I do need to expand my wild camping into different areas etc 👍
Great video! Crow✌️
Thanks very much Crow - appreciate you watching and commenting 👍
A pleasure to watch at ever …did you get to watch the UCO stand video?
Thanks for watching and commenting Phil - appreciate it. Yes, I found your vid and think it’s a very useful, and cost effective, idea. As you probably notice, I like to arrange some kind of adjustable pot-hanger in order to have a bit of heat control. (I loved the beaches in your vids - think I know where they are !) Thx again 👍
@@gilesbinyon your welcome mate, if yoh down this way look us up… Take care
Great camp Giles
Thx for watching and commenting - appreciated Frank 👍
@@keithoverfield1864 thx Keith, yeah, I should do that more often 👍

Nice Job. What’s the knife you use ?
Thanks again for watching and commenting. The knife was a good deal on Amazon (less than £25 I seem to remember). It’s made by Western Knifes. I think the blade is stainless but incorporates some titanium. I haven’t upgraded cos it’s been great. Just regular stropping seems to keep it razor 😊👍
@@gilesbinyon thanks for that
Wonderful video Giles👌👏 2 questions.....
Awesome video, where can I find one of those folding fires? Subscribed for more :)
Thanks for watching and your support. The fire pit is actually a vegetable steamer !!!
Real cheap but robust. Knock out the silly little legs and replace with longer but removable bolts for easy packing. 😊👍
@@gilesbinyon genius! A lot more compact than the tripod fires with wire mesh, thanks 👍
Was thinking the same thing. Top of the pack level with the base of the skull would make a lot of difference methinks. Likewise just commenting. :-)
Tipple, pasta and your shelter in a forest...living better than any vagabond or king. 👍
Thanks so much for watching Alex - appreciate the comment - yeah, just the simple basics is all you need for a good time 😊. Cheers my friend 👍
I love your set up minimum but enough to keep hyperthermia away, just lol
Ha ha! And sometimes NOT quite enough to keep away hypothermia 🥶 😂 Cheers 👍
Sometimes I think you escape to the woods just to have a drink Giles... 😆

Hi.

Hello and thx for watching. No this was not in Devon but Sussex 👍
@@gilesbinyon Ok,I’m in Somerset and it looked like not too far away, onto the way to the Jurassic coast.👍🏾
Is that a modified RS Bushcraft Plus? S England == beautiful :)
Thanks very much - appreciate you watching and commenting. Do you mean the backpack? - it’s an ex Croatian Army haversack which hangs really low but seems comfortable and it is 100 % natural fibre except for some Velcro 👍
@@gilesbinyon I've noted the haversack for future reference. I meant the knife :) Not that I want you to turn in to a bushcraft review channel hah!

Thank you kindly Handy Mandy. I really appreciate your positive words 😊👍

What pack is that mate?
Thx for watching Dan. The pack was an eBay buy. It’s a ‘Croatian Army Haversack’ I think. Small and oddly long shoulder straps but comfy and 100% natural fibres except for a small amount of Velcro 😐👍
