Vibrato is one of the things I am still struggling. This video helps me so much. Finally I know how to practise my vibrato over and over. :)
I'm so happy to hear that!
meeresstill what do u play
I’ve been trying to do vibrato for years and you simply saying to not grab the side of the fingerboard with your index finger made me be able to instantly do it!!
What do you by mean not grabbing the side of the fingerboard with your index finger? I think I may be doing it too, but I have no idea if I am or not.
@@bad_luck27 so my I index(first finger on fingerboard) naturally rests on the side/underneath kind of supporting the instrument. When I open up that space between my hand and the instrument it is able to move more freely and I am able to do vibrato. I still can’t tell if I’m doing it right to be honest, but it sounds good😭
@@mynamesstrawberry7579 OHH! I see now! I’ve been doing it too, and its much more possible after doing that small adjustment . I just have to do some practice
I try to vibrato, I end up shaking the whole viola.
*EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.*
KingCP08 :D me too but it gets better with practice
Same
FR PLS
SAME- 😭✋
😭
i’ve been a violist for four years now (i’m 15) and have always struggled with doing vibrato, and the pressure to learn has been crazy ever since i joined my school’s chamber and pit orchestra. it made everything surprisingly stressful for a couple months, and i was worried i was never going to get it, but this video was super helpful and i think i’m finally getting the hang of it? anyway, tysm, this was a great video :^)
One time I was performing in front of the class (I’m in beginning orchestra) and my hand was shaking so much someone complimented my vibrato 😓
Because of this video, I SUBSCRIBED!
+deltafour1212 Awww haha thank you!!!
same
I fail so hard at this
Four years later and I found your video. Vibrato is the one thing I never learned how to do when starting on viola, and even though I got into music school without it, I know it's an essential skill. Just wanted to let you know how much of an impact your video is having on others like myself years later, and to thank you for taking the time to put this together for all of us.
Thank you for the video! I am an 11 year old violist, abs this is helping me a lot!:)
That Strange Child Nice! Keep practicing and you’ll get really good!
Viola is like the offspring of a cello and a violin
Actually, the cello and violin are offspring of the viola :)
ThatViolaKid Woah, new perceptive :D I feel like viola is underrated
SilentRecon you feel
It is.
SilentRecon yeeett u thought
And the cello is offspring of a bass and viola
i just shake so violently :-(
Try relaxing more!!!
we were doing baroque music in my string quartet and earlier in the year we were doing a lot of exciting/intense and fast pieces so I got used to doing a lot of wide and quick vibrato (I was concertmaster as well) and so when we got this new piece from our chamber music director, I was doing quick and very wide vibrato and he stopped me right away and said, "didn't you know that Purcell is a baroque composer?" I felt really embarrassed so I just smiled at him and he said "your vibrato is so wide you're changing the pitch and because of that, the viola and 2nd violin are in misery!" (in chamber music the inside lines usually have to change their intonation to fit the group in case you didn't know) I had forgotten that in baroque music you barely ever do vibrato😁
I finally found a viola RUclipsr! Thank GOD!
Also why am I watching this I already can do vibrato
You should do a collaboration with two set. I wonder how that would go. lol
Love this! I have been playing viola for 16 years now and I so wished that I had this video back then. Haha!
Wow, that's longer than me! O_O
+ThatViolaKid. How old are you sir
Robin Henderson 24
Cool cool. We're only a couple years apart. Well I dont want to have full blown conversation under your video BUT
Perhaps we could contact each other through FB?
Sure! My page is Facebook.com/TVKUnlimited
I have been struggling so much in vibrato and I tried your method and it was like a revelation and now I can do it, thank you so much!
Thank You so much you are the best! I love all of your videos they help me so much!
You should totally make a video about your favorite repertoire and what it's like to be in an orchestra (college level wise) :) Love your videos!! AND GREAT JOB ON YOUR RECITAL!
+Xareny Polanco Thank you so much!!!!
I've seen a lot of vibrato tutorials and I have to say this one is the best I've seen so far! I loved the idea of electrified fingers! I've been playing the viola for three years now, and I think I'm finally getting the hang of how to do vibrato. Thank you for this amazing video (and the other ones too!) Keep it up Drew, greetings from Finland! ☺️💕
+Aino Palo Thank you so much!!! That makes me feel so happy--I'm glad I was able to help!!
I play Cello, and I'm pretty good at Vibrato when DOWN-BOWING, but I SUCK at doing it while up-bowing...
Oh. My. God. A black VIOLA RUclips. I've been blessed!
I've looked at about a dozen vibrato how to's. This is the best! Thank you. Now to practice.
I'm in 7th grade and i'm learning how to vibrato and you have really taught me well.
Holy crap, I play the viola too and I've been trying to find someone who's really good at vibrato and I just found you!! Great video!
i have been looking for a vibrato video for MONTHS and i randomly stumbled upon this one out of nowhere. i think this is the first vibrato video i've found that is actually helpful! thank you so much
Wowwww thank you so much!!! =D
Viola was the instrument I played in elementary whe. I joined Strings class, Also, my older sister played violin when she was in orchestra throughout middle and high school.
It's easier on the cello
+James Reyes Definitely :D
True
I agree!
ThatViolaKid um yes i play the cello, why is it more easier? Because your finger is more freely to move BUT it's still the same hard to do 4th finger vibrato ESPECIALLY doing it down-on the below part of the finger board wich makes it harder than violin too
It's easier on the microphone tbh
Omg thanks ur so cool I thought the only people on yt were pianists and violinists🙄😉
Thanks for the tips, hopefully if I use these I can make it to Chamber orchestra next year for 8th grade (I play the viola of course it's a beautiful Instrument)
Thanks for posting this video! This is my 5th year of playing viola, but all basic tips are still appreciated!! (Especially for small hands and 4th finger vibrato) :)
+OliLikesOlives I'm so glad it helped a bit!!! Best of luck out there!
1st: watch this video
2nd: practice the metranome thingy

You may remember my lost sole a little while ago asking for help with vibrato, through many hours of tearing the house down with super slow sirens and watching and rewatching this video as well as little help from my teacher (I've sent her slightly mad with my stupidity) I finally learnt it! Thanks so much tvk my playing is improving so much now thanks to your videos.

thank you so much~

So happy that you found it helpful! =)
I play the Viola and we are learning this, this really helped tHANK you
i feel like i cant do vibrato correctly because my 6th and 7th grade orchestra teacher never really put thought into his own students holding their violas and violins correctly or incorrectly. i started in 6th grade, and I'm going to 8th in august, and I'm still struggling to learn how to hold my viola correctly because of how much he neglected our learning. glad I'm getting a new teacher in 8th grade!
He started singing notes and I started singing happy hoedown and entry of the tumblers
+beautyislyfe eee Awesome :)
You're fantastic. Thanks for the awesome video.
+apm20131 Thank YOU for watching!!!
Love your videos dude! Thanks for helping an old man out! I'm a 57 y.o. newbie and you've really helped me, keep it up!
...thanks for the video!
My pleasure! Hope it helps!
this video helped sooooooo much. Thank you thank you thank you. My right hand position is so hard to get right! This is the best i've ever heard it explained
I'm so glad I was able to help!
this is a common misconception. Vibrato goes from the pitch down. Your ear picks up the highest point, which is where the starting point is. If you vibrato up and down, your vibrato is too wide. But, completely agree that being able to use different kinds of vibratos and speeds is important.
This is the best vid on learning vibrato. Thank you.
I play Viola and I just learned Faded by Alan Walker and I'm gonna need vibrato X3 ( FINALLY A VIOLA RUclipsR )
Wow... This really opened up my eyes to looking at vibrato in a different way. Instant subscribe and like.

Oh! Hey! Vibrato. I've only ever been able to do finger vibrato. I think you mentioned what I was doing wrong, though: my index finger is too grabby with the side of the board.
Well, now I know what I'm doing wrong, so maybe I can try to fix it.
Glad to hear it!!!
