Got a Crunch new two years ago: it's the most beautiful piece of engineering in such a small package! Love it
The crunch is one of the best multitool ever made I love mine
😳 That knife on the Irwin is CRAZY
Nice to see a multitool that doesn't come with a can opener
I still have my toolbox lying around the house somewhere. Used to have the needle nose version & the curved jaw versions as well. Both came with sheaths.
Bring back the crunch! I've only seen one in real life when I was a kid. My dad didn't get one because he couldn't see the potential!
I EDC a Crunch - it’s a GREAT tool
I loved my leatherman crunch. I lost it while fishing and waited to late to get a new one. I really wished they would bring it back.
I had the Irwin Schrade Toolbox. While useful, I find locking pliers are a hindrance when operating as a regular set of pliers. I Carry the Surge as my EDC Multi-Tool it works better for me with the rachet driver and 40 piece bit kit while maintaining a 9 building government complex
i have 2 leatherman crunches i bought an extra one before they discontinued then just incase i lost mine i carry it with a wave its awesome
I missed the Crunch. But I got the Engineer PZ-64 screw removal locking pliers. Those $22 pliers have notches that allow me to lock in t-shank saws and the Bibury t-shank file. They allow me to lock in the Leatherman ratchet, turning the pliers into a screwdriver handle. So: 1) locking pliers, 2) metal saw, 3) wood saw, 4) crosscut file, 5) diamond file and 6) ratcheting screwdriver. Sounds like a multitool to me!
@@ParkerBinion Nice!
That wobbly Irwin bit driver is as USELESS as the idiotic knife !!
We'll probably have a Chinese Crunch clone as soon as the patent expires .
I read this and thought, "How bad can it be?" Then I saw the video.
I can't stop laughing 😆
I had a Crunch at one time that I picked up cheap at a yard sale. While I do regret selling it I’ve got to be honest with myself and admit that I would never carry it. To me it has a very specific use for a specific set of people. Most people don’t often need locking pliers. It is generally the exception. I have a vintage set of Visegrips for my locking pliers needs. To each his own I guess.
There was a very rare Crunch knockoff already, made by Viking Norway (China) in early 2000s. It was about 5-6 times cheaper than Leatherman. I don't have one, but I've seen it and compared with original - the construction and dimensions were absolutely the same, the tools inside were same as well, exept the knife, it was plain, not serrated, and had different blade shape, more like clippoint. They also sold them on Amazon UK under "Silverline" brand for about 15$, but those good old times are gone.. The thing is steel quality. And that is the main problem for chinese clones, as I see. For something not so heavy duty, like Wave for example, chinese 3CR13-ish steel kinda works, but when we speak vise grips.. When I made comparison, it didn't broke, but after amount of force ordinary for LM Crunch, Viking Norway (we called it Viking NOway) frame just bent and twisted, so it couldn't perform it's function as a GRIP, only something light duty. That's why they don't do them anymore. The soft steel they work with (I mean oerations to press pull and bend the frame) can't provide strong grip, to do so, they need to change the construction, but they don't want to invest money in this engeneering research, all the clones we see are slightly different in design, this can be done fast and cheap, but all the main parts of the construction are just copied from LM - that is the difference between design and engeneering. So, to make real working Crunch clone they need either to reinvent it or to change their factory machines to work with more hard types of steel, and none of these options worth money they spent on it.
@@sukharev Appreciate the info!
I would love to see a crunch clone from bibury, rocktool, or dai camping
I've always wanted #SOG to make locking pliers with their compound leverage feature.
I'm thinking SOG PowerLock could be an ideal candidate to be a Crunch successor.
Compound leverage would enhance gripping force, improving usability in high-torque applications.
There’s new Kobalt vise grip pliers that have new features , like a side mounted release button. That could be ideal as base for a next generation multi tool.
@@ToolTechGeek Interesting!
Kershaw used to make their own version of the crunch.
when does the patent expire? Ready for some direct clones
1999. I think the patent is expired. As someone metioned, there has been a crunch clone already short lived unfortunately. It seems even overseas countries want in on mostly the popular models.
Hopefully one of these Chinese companies steps in and fills the gap Leatherman inexplicably left.
what is the schefield model for the Kershaw A100 clone? trying to find any info and you didnt mention anything?
It is impossibly hard to find unfortunately.
Sheffield crocodile, sometimes on ebay.
I have an Irwin schrade from the late 90s/ early 00s. Found it still in package in a general store, the packaging had dry rotted it sat there for so long. I like the idea, but the execution was poor. The needle nosed vice grips on it are wobbly and not good (your tool box version has the vice that I like better). The tools are small, poor quality, soft and not very useful. Better than nothing I suppose. I feel like they missed an opportunity to do something great with platform. I often carried a pair of malco vice grips and a Victorinox hiker to cover the bases. What was the tool set on that giant vice grips ?

The only real contender in the demain was the gerber grappler however it didn't had any bit driver...
Loved my shrade, it was stolen and many other multitools I had from my car. Sad day been trying to replace it..
@@christopherpotkonjak3802 That's awful!
I'm not try to knock the Leatherman crunch or the idea of a locking plier multitool. I think that, especially with the discontinuation of the crunch, you be better off just pairing a 4-6" locking pliers with a more standard multitool.
Do you know of a channel locks multi tool?
It was the toolbox
Only the Irwin model is currently sold new.
I so badly want a crunch for my collection
I wonder if Kershaw would be receptive to a petition for a revival of the Kershaw A100
@@Quizerno That would be awesome!
Hard to beat the Crunch’s size
Longer version next time.?

Sorry for the late reply but this gives more info on the larger one.
