  • Are we still using phrases like “gu niang,” or “man up” as insults in today’s context? As a society, most of us are already making large strides away from gender stereotypes but has this changed the way we raised the future generation of men at all? We invite our very own Singapore pride, Fandi Ahmad, who has literally raised 4 sons of his own, as well as his youngest son, Iryan Fandi, to discuss what it’s like to be a man today.

Haha...Fandi talked about playing anywhere the coach asks, so long as you get to play. I was in that position in my younger days too. In my own school team, I played across the back four, and was the reserve 'keeper even. With my adults business league team, I played in central defensive midfield. I was willing to play anywhere, yes, and I was fielded in a lot of different positions too. But not because I was skillful. Rather, the coaches saw that I knew how to read the game and anticipated moves better than most of my team-mates. I remembered one game when I was stuck in traffic and turned up 10 mins late, and the game had already started. When I was ready, our manager immediately subbed me in. It was only the 15th minute of the game. Man, I felt the pressure then......lol.

doesnt anyone else find the title problematic and sort of perpetuating a toxic form of masculinity? Just as we dont say "how to raise your daughter to be a WOMAN", we shouldnt do that for men. We should raise our children to be decent human beings without forcing them to conform to gender stereotypes. I'm fine if Fandi has his own thoughts on raising his children but the podcast shouldnt be framing and titling the video in this manner.
