Scaling this up with bigger “sticks” (sections of tree trunk) and a suitable rope, you can make a “flip-flop” winch to get your vehicle unstuck.

I think of this every time I hear or see a windlass after seeing that happen once. Now I have an easy way to move boulders and logs since I know that.

Neat idea. This might benefit from the old Y branch as a hook to hold it

I always use a taught line hitch with three internal wraps in any situation where I need to adjust and maintain tension. They have never let me down yet and I am in my 60's. I am sure the windlass works very well too, and I will keep it in mind in case I ever have a situation where my taught line hitches fail me. Thanks Dan.

Cool trick. Trucker's hitch can also be improved easily and more securely by making the loop a different type of knot.

If you place a stick in your truckers hitch it prevents it from over tightening.

Use the roman method and sting loop on the line, wind your sticks to the required tension .
Then just slide loop over the winding stick.
How the roman soldiers used to do it my friend.

After tensioning and last crossover, takse another short piece of twine (or cord) and throw a hitch to tie off so it wont flop loose and unwind. Even a wire tire or ziptie

This is brilliant and so simple. Whilst the Trucker's Hitch might be better if you don't tie it on a regular basis, most people including myself forget how to do it. When you're stood in the pouring rain you don't want to have to pause so that you can try to remember how to tie a knot.

You could put a prusic knot on the line you are tensioning and use it to secure the sticks. It is a more secure way of holding the tension.

Throw a sheep shank loop over one end of the stick parallel with the line and it won't go anywhere.

I will probably stick with the TI for setting up ridge-line, it's just too good of a knot. But as a tightening system on an already setup line, this is gold.

Could you not use a clove hitch to lock in the lever? When you get done winding it, just make a clove hitch in the line that goes to the shelter and loop it over the end of the stick. Yes? No?
Plus I think it would help spread the tension over the device. Maybe? I was on the path to eagle scout, but that was 44 years ago.

Because of how easy a truckers hitch is ... And how it doesn't come apart in a breeze. This is a dangerous mistake not a replacement

Why not use a "Y" stick as the winder so when you turn it sideways to lock, the "Y" will keep it from slipping?

But, but...I feel like such a bad-ass every time I successfully make and use the trucker's hitch... (Disclaimer: I still feel like one when I ignite a Vaseline cotton ball with a ferro rod, too. I am easily amused.) Hey, as long as we're all having fun, right? ;) I will give this new tensioning way a try, though, just like I keep working/playing with other ways to start fires. Thanks, Dan, for another great video. And for an intro that made me literally LOL!

An Alpine Butterfly loop would give you a place to hook the end of that stick so that it wont come out. However if you are competent enough to tie one, why wouldn't you just tie the truckers hitch?
