Make your own Viking / Rus historical straps and hold your gear tight
A second video, this time filmed as a tutorial, or DIY straps. It’s not the most spectacular, but certainly one of the most useful item in your kit. And definitely one of the few things that make the difference when you want to be as accurate and historical as possible.

Thats a really neat and simpal project. Id just be worried the wood might slpit along the grain. I lnow your working inside the growth rings of the twig or branch, so its as solid as it can be. But ld be leery of putting to much of a load on one. Just my thought, still a cool project and definitely a cool accessory for closers and jewelry

Thank you 😊. Using oak here, I’ve something really sturdy, this is also why I’ve chosen that wood (even if it’s much harder to work with than for instance birch… but that’s the price of that sturdiness). So I don’t really worry about it to break at some point… moreover as a simple sling for my tarp.

Love the beautiful scenery and birdsounds in the background. I do wonder though, what is the purpose of the wooden ring? Could you not just use the loop on the rope to the same effect?

About the wooden part, you’re absolutely right, BUT (of course there is a “but” 😉), it won’t be a durable solution, as friction of the two leather parts will really quickly weaken them. The wooden part avoid this friction, being smoother (it’s also for the same reason that I scratched the external part of the loop to avoid sharp edges). Of course, if you use modern paracord, you don’t need wooden piece as direct friction there won’t be a problem. So if you want something historical and durable… this is the best way (you can also replace wood by bone if you want, a metal ring would also work, but is not very historical, being too expensive for such a piece of gear at the time).
As for clothes… well noted. I’ll think about it 😀.

Hi, I bought it on a flea market in Eastern Europe, no idea where it comes from. But you can find some historical replicas on Etsy for sure, I’ve already seen some.

Hooooo there is a whole story behind it ! I ordered a piece of crap on a website I absolutely don’t recommend (bad quality items not corresponding to the pictures, problems with delivery, etc.) and had to work it myself to make it that good. One of my next video will be entirely on this subject.
