  • @nickolashessler314

Peterson's entire philosophy can be summed up as follows:
"1. Have discipline and take responsibility for the problems in your life, but not _those_ problems; those would take a lot of discipline and effort to change.
    2. Treat yourself like someone worth helping, but don't treat you community that way.
    3. Befriend those who want what's best for you, just as long as "best" just means anything you already want.
    4. Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, so long as you can make yourself look good or your current goals look worthwhile.
    5. Do not let your children do anything that makes you dislike them, but if the right people are doing things that would normally make you dislike them, it is what it is.
    6. Clean your room, but don't try to fix your society; again, that's too much effort.
    7. Pursue what is meaningful, so long as it's expedient.
    8. Tell the truth - or at least don't lie - unless the truth is complicated or inconvenient.
    9. Assume people you listen to know something you don't, unless they're one of those woke postmodern neomarxists.
    10. Be precise in your speech, unless vagueness can further your goals better than precision can.
    11. Do not bother children while they are skateboarding, bother them when they're exploring their identities in a way you don't like.
    12. Pet a cat when you see one on the street; compassion is a virtue best exercised expediently to random animals, not to those you find hard to have sympathy for."

I suspect Kuba and/or Ben will get to this, but its so wrong I just have to pause the video lol. What Peterson says at 6:00 is just completely wrong. You can read this in the associated Guardian article with 'word salad of nonsense' in its title if you look it up (they dropped their paywall, yay!!). Climate models don't have errors that accumulate like compound interest. Weather does, but not climate. There are models made back in the 60s that are still valid today. And then at 6:40 when he says that Germany ended up using more energy than they created, that is just plainly false. You can look up the energy usage graphs over time in Germany, they are free on Wikipedia. Since the year 2000 Germany has considerably increased their use of wind and solar, to the point where now it accounts for 20% of their energy sources. So what he is saying is total nonsense. The technologies are proven and they work. There are even entire countries like Iceland and Costa Rica which are 100% driven by renewables. So if renewables really "cost more energy than they created" then these cases would be impossible.
The thing is Peterson has garbage sources. He only talks to like one or two people - either Richard Lindzen or Bjorn Lomborg, two well-known climate change deniers known for cherry picking their data, and concludes he's done solid research. The man is a total fool. And what is stunning about it is that he's supposed to be a psychology professor, so you would think he's well-equipped to understand the dangers caused by psychological biases that would lead him to reading two partisan sources and thinking he's done his background reading. How can you ignore 10,000+ scientists on the other side who are united in disagreement, including leaders in the field? How is that possible, for someone who went to Harvard? I can't even DREAM of an undergraduate making such a gallingly bad mistake in any of their term papers, as to summarize an entire field by reviewing the work of two cranks. It is just jaw droppingly stupid.
But anyway, I know we all know this. But it helps to let this stuff out lol. I really did myself a favour when I chose to stop reading anything this guy put out you feel way better

    • @liamhickey359
      @liamhickey359 4 месяца назад

Peterson is wrong for sure. But he's right about renewables at a superficial level. The world will not be producing 19 terawatts of energy out of renewables. In ways I find the left and the libs are far too credulous about what can be done to fix the climate as it were. Read any study from the 70s. The were calling for immediate emission reductions. The exact opposite happened with a doubling of emissions. The c02 dumped into the atmosphere in the last 20 years will do it's work in the next 20 years. In short the highest emissions in history haven't even kicked in yet. There is hardly any recognition of this. And absolutely nothing is being done or will be done about it. Peterson cant see this even if it came up and it kicked him in the balls. He's too busy wallowing in his own magisterial self importance to get it. I found on the otherhand that girls question utterly cringe worthy. A question so fcking wet you could shoot snipe off it .The problem is: illusory panaceas are distracting us from a reality that I happen to think has largely slipped out of our control. In a sense I dont think humans can really steer civilisation it could very well the other way around.

As a psychologist, I suppose I do get his preference for testable interventions. If you're considering multiple approaches to a problem, obviously it's nice to know the efficacy of each possible path.
While that's great and all in clinical psychology, where you can set up a randomized controlled trial, planets and climates indeed don't really lend themselves to that sort of methodology.
He then gets really sceptical with "How are you going to solve problems if you cannot measure the consequences of your actions".
Ok, so what? Does he really think that "If you cannot accurately predict the future, you might as well sit back and hope for the best, or that the light will eventually dawn upon you"? Intuitively, is it really that unreasonable to, if you have a pretty good grasp of the mechanism behind your problem, just try to intervene on the level of that mechanism?
I get the sense that Peterson either doesn't (care to) understand the methodology behind climate science, or that he discounts it somehow, perhaps because it doesn't seem to fit with what he considers a sound method for testing interventions.
At any rate, I'd have hoped that doing a PhD would give someone a little more appreciation for the depth and nuance behind the methods and produced knowledge of any particular discipline. Presumably, seeing the amount there is to learn about the foundations of your own field, might lead you to believe that other fields have similar depth and cannot be dismissed just because it isn't intuitive to you how the conclusions are supported.

I think a rather reasonable point gets totally lost in all the talk. nuclear energy is expensive for silly reasons, the silly reasons are based on good reasons like safety, colliding with politics and unpredictability for the industry, nuclear plans can be made more or less idiot proof (relatively speaking), the safety issues are far from the level of concern the anti nuclear activists associate with it. and shutting down nuclear power in favor of coal is silly, the cost level can be brought down by a lot at scale and also when industry can actually use data and tests from old projects to build new reactors. nuclear energy is a nice and safe way to produce power, and Germany shutting down their was kind of silly in my opinion, just the flip flopping alone makes nuclear power way more expensive than it really is. so all in all he is right about nuclear power, but that is a kind of small side point to the discussion anyway. it is good to worry about the politics of climate action, but that doesn't mean climate action is a bad thing :P, it is just difficult to achieve what we need to without causing political backlash, that is a real problem but i think it is kind of irresponsible to just assume the best thing to do is to ignore it, we have no idea what a +4C world looks like politically, nor how many tipping points we reach along the way, it is dangerous to ignore it. the sober assessment is to consider the political issues as adding to the climate issues, making the whole situation harder to handle, not to then shrug the climate issues of as somehow already unsolvable.
