Despite all good things you say...Photography is no more Photography...people in now days are replacing sky, replacing object...because its easy to get more and more likes and followers, this is not Photography, this is cheating...but i believe that this cycle of stupidity will end some day,and people will start apreciate again real Landscape Photography.

That mindset will never get you where you want to go though... Direct all attention to what you're trying to accomplish. There is no utility in paying attention to things we can't control. It will only distract you from working on what really matters. This is the biggest trap of the information age. Don't fall for it:) Make a plan and execute it. Repeat.

@@DaveMorrowwow, wise words. Absolutely true that information overload can distract us from our goals. Make a goal and stick to it.

Hi Dave, good advice video. BTW have you read Aldo Leopolds' book "A Sand County Almanac". I highly recommend it to you if you haven't - yet! I suspect that you have.

Really informative video clearly explained and useful for a beginner/intermediate photographer like me. Thanks Dave. I also like your ability to mix experience with humility, sharing that you weren't always an expert, but made plenty of mistakes too. Like we all do. Please keep it up!!

It's interesting to hear about your creative process and the trials and errors you went through to get there. I feel that you genuinely enjoy teaching and have that unique ability to be aware of your viewer's "beginner mind" and thus you don't gloss-over essential details that many other teachers do. Many teachers give me the impression that they consider teaching as a necessary evil they have to do in order to support their photography business.

Thanks Rich. Teaching and designing the process is one of my favorite things. Challenging and fun.

The weather tip is a great one Dave. I made that mistake of always relying on weather reports and letting it dictate when I go out. It's never a wasted trip is it...being out in nature and getting the exercise makes it all worth while regardless of getting a shot or not.

  • @craigallenphotography

On the weather point you mentioned, even if you don't get a good image being out in adverse weather is an exhilarating experience and some of my most memorable times outdoors involve VERY bad weather. I totally agree on the gear issue as well, too much is made of "I need this new camera..." Great video.

There is no such a thing as a BAD weather. It is just a weather and it only gets bad if you won't get anything out of it.

Dave, I am new to your channel and have seen perhaps 3 of your videos and I am mightily impressed. I have been a photographer selling my work for some years now and consequently have seen many tutorials etc on RUclips however none have been as engaging as yours. It is so refreshing to hear someone as eloquent as yourself speaking about this passion of ours. Well done sir!

Thanks! Glad you like the videos. Camera gear matters a lot after you understand the basic skills of camera technique and composition. After you have a good full frame camera and a nice set of 2 lenses, there isn't a reason to upgrade for a decade though. More here---> www.davemorrowphotography.com/landscape-photography

The learning process is one of the negative aspects of learning on your own. Since you don't know the field you don't know in which order you need to learn things. Thus you're constantly being fed information in the wrong order, where as you said we never learn the fundamentals of the subject we are trying to learn and me might spend years practicing a false/flawed method. Thinking we know the subject a lot better than we actually do. Very kind of you to remind me of this!

Thank you, Dave. Very inspirational. We were on our way to a sunset shoot on Pfeiffer Beach near Big Sur, CA when rain threatened. Instead of persevering, we turned around and went back. We might have lost the opportunity to get some nice storm clouds on a windy beach. Next time, I will not turn around.

I upgraded from a canon SL1 to a canon R because i had outgrown the SL1. Now I am having to learn how to use the canon R so I can get back to my ingrained skills with SL1. The R is very different so I am having to relearn what to set when. When I get better at that, then I can go back to focusing on composition like you said.

I really appreciate your honesty, generosity and ability to break things down and teach them. I come from a medical profession so your systematic approach really resonates. Building on the basics and establishing a firm foundation has taken my photography further than more expensive gear ever could. I was someone who spent too much time watching videos and feeling intimidated thinking I wasn't good enough....then I did what you said and just got out and took pictures. The times I can immerse myself in photography and being outdoors are the best. Thanks, stay safe and keep teaching us!

Good advice and another angle on your comments is there is no short cut to success, only hard work and commitment will get you there. Just changed my camera for the reason you stated and that is inhabitation of my specific needs so the change isn't so much a technological need but more a practical need as technology wise there isnt a real difference in what I bought
