For me Conan the Barbarian has the best soundtrack a film has EVER had.!! 💜🖤💜🖤
It was excellent.
Have to agree on that, Lord of the Rings comes close but I still think CtB is the GOAT of movie soundtracks.
You can say that again.
Specifically Conan the Barbarian is the pinnacle in fantasy sword film. Between the sets, stoic acting, and themes this movie is unmatched. The soundtrack set the standard in Hollywood for scores. Basil Poledouris scored a perfect soundtrack. 10/10
Well said
It was great!
To me, the score for Conan the Barbarian is the only one that surpasses John Williams original score for Star Wars.
Conan and Excalibur are my top tier fantasy adventure movies.
I’m going to cry when I see it in 4k HDR. Love Arnold in the Conan films.
lol me too
They're Beautiful
I watch both films every year in July since they’ve came out. Growing up with my best friend. We watched together every year. Then we married twin sisters. And I became a god parents of his kids.
And him mine. Unfortunately 5 years ago he was killed in car accident.
For last five years I watch these two films with his boy and my two kids. So to me these films are the best. Can wait to give them each a copy.
Just wish my friend was here see it in 4jk.
That's an incredible story. I"m sorry for your loss.
Thank you!
Amazing and heartfelt story man and I'm very sorry for your and your and his family's loss.
Thank you.
That is indeed a great story. Sorry you lost your friend. It’s awesome you honor him every year that way.
So much testosterone in these movies you grew a mustache just watching them
Hell yeah!
I just hope "Excalibur" will be next. It's never had proper 4k restoration the way Star Trek: The Motion Picture and now Conan The Barbarian has.
I hope so, I've been waiting to see a 4k Excalibur for ages and unfortunately still no signs it's happening. Given the weird dreamy way it was shot I wonder if it's a difficult one to remaster in 4k.
Unfortunately Excalibur has some major issues. We may never see it in 4k
Especially the audio. Apparently the audio is completely jacked up. They couldnt remaster it properly.
Maybe now with AI assistance it can be done.
YES please. Although the Blu ray is very impressive.
Can’t wait! Ordered both! If these sell well, hopefully we can get a King Conan movie with Arnold for one last adventure to complete the trilogy
Thank you for your review on these. I haven't seen them in a couple decades, I am glad to hear they hold up! I look forward to seeing them both on 4K!!!
My copy of Barbarian 4K has finally shipped. Still waiting on Destroyer. Can't wait to see how these look.
Man, your enthusiastic reviews sell me on grabbing a new 4K disc every time. I'm really looking forward to this one as it's one of the few Arnold movies I haven't seen. This is the level of expectation I want in these box sets that I don't mind paying just a little extra for.
I’m 52 , and my cousin, who’s almost my same age, after we watch the movie, we had his dad help us make some wooden swords so we could play fight like Conan the barbarian in the backyard.
Great to hear these are top notch and that you dug them a lot. Great memories of watching these out at my dad's back in the day. Looking forward to my set coming in.
So happy to hear these are great releases. Still waiting for mine that I pre-ordered from Amazon. Can't say I remember a lot of Destroyer but I remember not liking that it dialed up the comic relief of his support characters. I prefer the more serious tone of the 1st film and of course the blood & guts and nudity as it wasn't afraid to be a R-rated feature. James Earl Jones was fantastic in it.
For film purists these are gold. Everything is preserved including the film grain. Its particularly noticeable in the first movie.
Got mine coming, Ken! I've seen them several times each and have the HD Blu-rays, but these sets are going to kick A**. Thanks for the amazing review of each!
Mine are finally on the way! Checking tracking every day. Should be here Monday or Tuesday.
My favorite era of film is 1977-1988'ish. Because of Star Wars and how it inspired so many film makers to bring their dreams to the big screen and take risks that had never come before and quite honestly we have never seen since. Not only did we get Conan the Barbarian in 1982, but movies like;
1.) Clash of the Titans
2.) Krull
3.) Alien
4.) Close Encounters of the Third Kind
5.) Krull
6.) Escape From New York
7.) The Thing
8.) They Live
9.) Raiders of the Los Ark/ Temple of Doom
10.) The Last Starfighter
11.) Willow
12.) The Neverending Story
13.) Tron
14.) Dune
15.) Legend
16.) InnerSpace
17.) Masters of the Universe
18.) Buckaroo Banazi and the 8th Demension
19.) The Lost Boys
20.) The Road Warrior
21.) Ghostbusters
22.) Blade Runner
23.) Robocop
24.) Akira
25.) Back to the Future
26.) Terminator
27.) E.T.
28.) Star Trek II
29.) The Princess Bride
30.) Big Trouble in Little China
31.) 2010
32.) Enemy Mine
33.) Starman
34.) Running Man
35.) Time Bandits
36.) Labryrinth
37.) Aliens
That's just off the top of my head! This era is so great and it is wonderful seeing them one by one be completely restored in 4K.
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home was very successful and good! We had Arnold in Commando, Predator, Ghostbusters II, Back To the Future II, The Last Crusade, The Dead Poet's Society, The Abyss, Caddyshack (RIP Cindy Morgan), Coccoon, Gremlins, LifeForce, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, Vacation, Arthur (Dudley Moore),
Young Sherlock Holmes, Dragon Slayer, Highlander, Good Morning Vietnam, Full Metal Jacket. Some good choices.
@@LeeTheVet Great additions to the list.
Mine arrived yesterday (26th) and I do have the old releases of both on Blu but my gosh is there a lot more features on the new. Always love that fresh ink smell of the books!
Now you need to watch Red Sonja, the unofficial sequel/spinoff
And Kull the Conqueror
Got mine today from special store
love you ken and glad you got to experience conan for the first time like this
So glad to hear these transfers are good!
Thanks for the review! I have these on order the double Chronicles. Can't wait. One slight correction Conan actually began as pulp fiction stories and novels by the great Robert E Howard. Not as comics - they came later. I was into the books myself not the comics. Though the story doesn't really follow any of the original novels as such, Conan the Barbarian totally nails the feel and mood an ethos etc. One of the main points of these being they were serious and bloody although often fantastical. The 2nd movie was really a total betrayal of this playing it mostly for laughs - which the original never did. Still it has its moments and Arnie's still great in it of course 👍
This set has again surprised the hell out of me. I was born in 1980 and just never got into Conan, although I’ll say I am a big fantasy adventure film lover so I’m disappointed it took me this long to discover…but so happy to experience it. Arrow truly killed it with these from film 4k restoration and sound with Atmos.
The first cone and the barbarian movie was my favorite and I will definitely be picking up both his movies.
Couple of things:
- Conan didn't originated as comics, these came waaay later. Conan stories were originally published by Robert E. Howard in US pulp fantasy magazines in the 1930's before they were published as separate books.
Fun fact: Conan's ''Hyborean'' setting is officially part of H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos. Howard & Lovecraft were pen pals and used to exchange ideas for their stories. Lovecraft even wrote a touching eulogy for Howard, when the latter passed away.
-After Howard's death, various other authors wrote new Conan stories & in the 1970's, the ''Savage Sword of Conan'' comics, published by Marvel made the character even more popular.
Besides them, I could recommend the Dark Horse comics that adapt the ''Nemedian Chronicles'', the ''Cimmerian'' Conan comics by French publisher Glenat ( they're available in English) and the most recent Titan Comics series, which features new, original stories.
-The Red Sonja movie, with Brigitte Nielsen was in fact supposed to be a Conan spin-off and Arnie is supposed to play Conan in the movie. But there was some issue with the legal rights and producer Dino De Laurentis didn't want to pay extra money for the rights, so they changed Arnie's character name to ''Lord Calidor'' at the last minute.
- In terms of which movie is more true to the source material: yes, Destroyer is closer to the books & comics. Even more close is actually the 2011 Conan movie, with Jason Momoa that everyone is trashing on and you can get your pitchforks out, but I think that Momoa was great as Conan.Sadly the rest of the movie was pretty bad....
Conan in the original stories is not just some dumb brute barbarian, but a really intelligent & nuanced character, who lives by his own ''code of honor''.
When Conan was released at theaters a lot of people had the music it was playing everywhere
I did order the Chronic les lol 😂🤣 I'm looking forward to both of these because it's been twenty plus years since I've seen these. Awesome 😎
Just ordered mine from Walmart, was sitting on the fence but he sold it!
Been waiting for a long time we get a Conan the barbarian 4K.
I’m so happy that they look good and you got to see them and appreciate them bro! I can’t WAIT to get mine!! Got them on sale from Barnes & Noble along with The Last Starfighter and Carlito’s Way all in 4K!!!! Blessings to Arrow!!!!😂💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
You're going to love them!
“ Im so excited“ Great review Ken. Awaiting my Amazon delivery, hopefully it arrives sooner then later 🇨🇦
If you preordered the 4K Chronicles set, don't get your hopes up. Amazon screwed up and more people pre-ordered than they were ever going to have in stock. Even some people who pre-ordered early aren't getting them. They likely aren't going to get more in even though they have a Feb 20th release date listed. These were limited editions. The best bet is to try something like Barnes & Noble or go with the standard blu-ray releases that are based on the 4K and still have all the extras.
Received my Conan Chronicles edition from Diabolik DVD yesterday, can’t wait to watch them soon.
Enjoy!
Haven’t seen the film since the right age of puberty at age ten with a double feature on one disc on dvd. Being 26 now and waiting for it to come in, suffice to say it’s gonna be an overwhelming experience for me seeing it on 4K…
You're gonna love it!
Love your show man keep making videos bud, cool glasses by the way
Can't wait for these. I ordered the big box set that has both, but it doesn't release till Feb 20. on Amazon.
Bro!
Get the FULL Atmos setup! Whats the hold up?
I got 5.2.2 right now, I'm so impressed with Immersive Audio that I'm upgrading to 7.4.6. You got some catching up to do!
I've pre-ordered Conan The Barbarian on 4k and hopefully that arrive at my doorstep on Tuesday 👊👊📽
The first VHS video I ever rented (back in today) was Conan. By CROM what a great start to movie watching!!
I believe the individual movies will be released on Jan. 30, whereas the box-set with both movies in one box will be released on Feb. 30. I bought the box set on Amazon and they say I will get it on Feb. 20. The commentary track with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Director John Milius is LEGENDARY! It is hands-down THE most fun audio commentary ever put to a physical media movie disk! It is hilarious! Count how many times Arnold says the word "Exactly!". LOL
Conan originated in the 1930s pulp stories by Robert E. Howard, which are great reads even today, not in the Marvel comics.
I can't wait.....
Great reviews Sir... Just ordered the set of both... Amazon does state the date is Feb 20th... I called B and N... the guy who works in the video area stated they would be out the 30th of Jan, which is how they were included in the 50% sale... We will see... also, you're right about Arrow... They are really putting out incredible work... I picked a few Martial Arts movies including Hand Of Death, and The Prodigal Son... They BOTH looked fantastic... Also, the price... 45.00 for BOTH of these films is a really good value... looking forward to watching them.. My favorite is The destroyer; I enjoyed them both, but Wilt Chamberlain, Grace Jones, etc, made for just a more fun time at the movies.. Thanks for your efforts.
Thanks for watching and Destroyer was awesome!
Amazon messed up and too many people preordered when the price of the 4K Chronicles set was reduced to more than 50% off for a time. That's why they put up the Feb 20 date, to try and get around the debacle. Even people who preordered before the price drop aren't getting them shipped. Apparently Amazon sent out emails to some customers saying there was a "supply chain" problem, but it was really just Amazon being incompetent and not knowing how to handle the situation other than to pretend that they will get more in by Feb 20, which is unlikely as it is a limited edition and Arrow would have to make more just for Amazon. The 4Ks are selling out everywhere and many people who stuck with Amazon are out of luck. The single 4K releases are already sold out on Amazon.
Great review, as always 👍
Thank you!
Mine shipped out today!
Omg - your analogy for the films (using the Indiana Jones films ) was exactly what I thought !!!! Amazing . I was in my teens when these came out . Excited for the 4K editions !!! Right now I’m only getting Barbarian on special edition 4k ….. I like but don’t love Destroyer . I felt Barbarian was more epic , was closer to a “realistic” feel , and had the better cinematography. I will probably wait for a standard edition on destroyer .
Amazing review as always Ken !! Thanks so much !!
Thanks for watching! Sucks we never got our Last Crusade with Conan.
Pre-ordered from Amazon and it is currently out of stock. Called every Barnes and Noble within 200 miles and nothing. Thanks Arrow Video for releasing about 100 copies.
Their both damn good movies been watching them since i was a kid im 40 now
Thanks, got mine on the way from Arrow which charged me twice and still trying to correct their mistake. Most anticipated release. Let’s go Excalibur, Ladyhawke, 13 Warrior,
Lady Hawke would be cool!
I'm actually doing a fam edit of Destroyer, to make it darker in tone. Wouldn't change a thing about Barbarian. Looking forward to my 4K arriving.
I saw Conan the Barbarian in the theatre as a kid. It's a masterpiece of a sword/sorcery film. Conan the Destroyer is lighter in tone than Barbarian, but great fun. Conan the Barbarian is one of my all-time favorite films.
Im buying the new 4K pack of the Conan movies for the bonus features especially for Conan the Destroyer. the bonus features behind the scenes stuff i do enjoy for movies that i buy
Both movies arrived today. I just watched the first movie, it’s amazing, picture and sound quality is top notch. My only complaint is the LFE channel: Mild to weak!
Probably this is due to the movie was made over 30 years ago, so strong LFE availability weren’t in high demand. I’m watching Conan using a 7.2.6 Dolby Atmos setup.
My 4K Chronicles are on their way. Can't wait.
I can't wait to get my copies from Amazon sometime in February Arnold was awesome in barbarian this movie is the pre Terminator getting us fans for an incredible blockbuster mega movie. Sandal Bergman was incredible in Conan the barbarian really liked her and Arnold's chemistry together was a definite plus too bad they don't make movies like this anymore looking forward to owning both on 4k is just amazing thanks go out to arrow video.
My favorite is Conan the Barbarian! I got mine!
Ken, you gotta see Stay Hungry with Jeff Bridges, Sally Feild , and Arnold. Cool 70s flick with a weird wrestling twist ending.
That does sound cool!
Destroyer is the ace ventura of the conan series.
Now I'm regretting not buying these separately! I bought Conan chronicles but these are so frigging beautiful next to each other! 😍
That Chronicles set is very nice too though!
I ended up getting the blu ray sets separately as I have yet to upgrade to 4K. The Chronicles set was also available in blu ray. I didn’t mind spending the extra $25 for the artwork.
when i was little, destroyer was my favorite, but when i became an adult, barbarian became my favorite.
Ken you hit the nail on the head. Destroyer was not bad it was just the Temple of Doom. I pre-ordered Barbarian but I might just spend little less money on Destroyer for the Arrow standard release. Basil Poledouris soundtracks are wonderful. I think Arrow can give us the ultimate edition of the original Clash of the Titans.
Clash would be incredible.
Great review, really in depth. Just wondering, the special features disc for Barbarian, is that region A locked or region free?
It's likely Region A.
What does the Chronicles set lack versus the individual sets?
I watch "...Destroyer" a lot more than"...Barbarian". As you mentioned, I believe it is due to the pacing and the comic book imagery. To me, it's more fun and I love Conan's personality. "... Barbarian" is definitely cool. I like its more serious premise and imagery, but it just seems to drag in places.
Definitely agree!
I hope that they Bring out Red Sonja On 4K
That would be awesome..
I have the 4k version of Red Sonja from a year or two ago. It might be out of print now.
Red Sonja 4K is available on Amazon
StudioCanal did release Red Sonja on 4K a couple of years back, albeit only in Europe.
@@agentahmed7350 Yes, but I have it and since 4Ks are region free, there you go. It looks good.
Oliver Stone wrote part of the 1st film. It's John Milius who wrote most of it.
Yeah. Just meant he was a writer on it.
In the US we had the darker ending and in Europe it was was a positive end of the Rescue of the Kings daughter.
Huh. That’s a weird opposite move for the US. Usually US would have happy endings while the UK have sad endings.
I like the conan movies, but destroyer is my favorite I love that movie the mirror smashing scene is my favorite scene where arnold hurts the monster by smashing the mirrors, neat movie
Already sold out everywhere. I will wait for the standard edition. I need the first one in 4k.
Can’t wait for TWISTER 🌪️ 4k
Me either!
@@timothymathetes
I watched it for the 1st time back in 1997.
I was mind blown at that time with the special effects and overall story.
@elgatosamurai9517 Me too. It's a real epic. I also can't wait for The Day After Tomorrow.
@@timothymathetes
That and Dante’s Peak 👌
I ordered the chronicle set just to get both and get it over with. I loved them movies when I was younger, so I’m excited to add them to my Arrow collection.
But on a side note, I noticed them Giallo box sets behind you. Are they worth the money. I’ve seen one are two at my local Barnes and Nobel but never all three.
Haven't watched every movie, but they're fine Giallos of the ones I've seen. Just not top tier outside of Torso.
Is release end of April to get boxset?
Robert Ebert gave Conan the Destroyer two thumbs up!
Smart man.
The stories originate from ‘20s pulps written by Robert E Howard the comics started in the late 60s. Neither films are like the original stories which originated the sword and sorcery genre. I love the first film and its one of my favorite films destroyer I only saw it one in ‘84 and I didn’t think too much of it except for Olivia D’abo she was even better in Bullies.
Just go the Chronicles 4K....So going to watch this this weekend,,,!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
These DVDs have been available for a while now. They're not going anywhere. Right on the Arrow website
hello how many frames 24 or 23,976
Is the 4k chronicles the same as the individuals?
i ordered the chronicles version which has been dispatched but will take a while as im in the U.K
It's worth the wait!
I’m not crazy about these films. I’d happily wait for standard editions.
I placed an order through Amazon in America on 1 February for Conan the Barbarian 4K (Double movie edition). I received a message from Amazon on the 5 March that there was a supply delay. Could someone please tell me if the Conan series has sold out and this is a generic Amazon message? Thank you
An update on my February Conan the Barbarian set query. There was a massive delay in waiting, but Arrow came good in the end and my order has been shipped. I’m pleased I was able to order this set and have it shipped out. Thank you, Arrow ❤
Amazon told me mid February for mine.
I thought they were 4k? Why won't they play on my PS5? Please help!
Just found out about this release. They're already sold out or price jacked.
AGREE - Conan The Destroyer is a great Movie! But Conan the Barbarian is the BEST
good review.
Thanks!
You Go My Little Minion...
😆 🤣 😂
In Finland Conan the Barbarian goes for 75€ and boxset with both of them 120€.
Iconic movies 🤘🤘🤘
my conan chronicles purchase got pushed to the 20th
Love It!
Arrow also released the saga collection in Blu Ray separately which is also great for those who haven't upgraded or prefer Blu Ray edition instead of 4k.
Of course. Definitely forgot to mention that in this review, but will Monday on the Report!
The Barbarian is more true to the Robert E Howard stories whereas Destroyer is more like a comic book adaptation. I enjoy both but my preference is the original film. Being a fan of rhe books i just find the first film nails the vibe totally. Second film i really enjoy but there's something special about the first one. A shame we never saw the long rumoured third film apparently set when Conan was much older (Conan the King?). Its probably too late now unless loads of cgi is used but it would have been cool had they made it when Arnie was younger.
Arrow gives you two movies in thick ass cardboard for $45. Severin gives you one movie in flimsy ass cardboard for $55.
💯
The Script for the unmade third movie is available online King Conan Crown of Iron written by John Milius
i wish we got a old man king conan movie
Finally watched them today. Loved them! Looked amazing. Destroyer wasn't as refined as Barbarian IMO. Still great, but soft at times. Also audio on Destroyer was botched IMO. Very dated and no where as good as first one. Plus, I forgot about the movie all together. Watching them back-to-back, Destroyer is not on the same level. I was bored...it fell flat.
Ive come to learn all limited edition means is be prepared to have to buy off a sleazy reseller in a month after its release
I know the Movie Story, i Would like to See More about the Box, the Extras and Special
I mean I covered a lot of that as well
First time watching, WHAT?!
I was shocked too!
I don't think this has a UK release yet Arrow are a UK company 🤔
