- This is a retrospective on the under-appreciated #Conan the Destroyer (1984), one of my favorite movies... seriously.
If you were to transform Dungeons & Dragons into a (good) movie, it might be this one.

Thank you not enough love for this. I also find myself rewatching this more than barbarian but still love barbarian. thanks man very informative
I agree 100% with your analysis, and I too would purchase the Fleischer Cut.
Haha yes. Would love to see it!
I gravitate towards teams rather than solo heroics, so I always preferred this to the first movie. Re-watched it tonight and it's still a lot of fun, with great interactions between the characters, breathtaking locations, and some awesome set design. One of my two favourite sword-and-sorcery movies (the other being the rather stranger and more trashy Beastmaster).
Yeah, I love the sets for this movie. And Beastmaster is definitely an entertaining watch.
I join in on the notion. Best RPG movie. Period.
I've said in comments elsewhere on this site that Conan the Destroyer is the best Dungeons and Dragons movie we've ever gotten. It's nice to see I'm not alone on that assessment. The movie certainly has its flaws, I still enjoy it.
Absolutely!
Good stuff. I need to move these films up my rewatch list. Loved the 90's Conan cartoons when I was a kid too.
This is actually the first I've heard of those! I'll look for them on RUclips. Thanks.
9:55 I've never seen Beastmaster, but all of the others are still fucking awesome!
I have a special child-like affection for Dragonslayer.
Beastmaster is true early 80s fantasy camp.
Now I can appreciate this with you ! Thank you
i love this movie, i love it more than the original
As usual, great commentary. An interesting take on a movie I'll never want to see despite your engaging analysis. thanks.
😄
great vid man. i always preferred destroyer. and you made me understand why.
Great video! Just found your channel and I’m very impressed! Informative and entertaining! Know you are doing a great job! I used to hate on Destroyer as bad and cheesy but this video gave me a lot to think about.
Thank you! That's great to hear.
Destroyer definitely has a lower reputation than Barbarian among fans.
I find it funnier, funner, and objectively superior on a technical level, but of course, it's subjective which movie is "better." Hard to beat JEJ as a villain!
You are 100% on the money. I actually prefer Destroyer to Barbarian. and yes, the movie is beat for beat a great D&D module.
So do I
I loved Conan the destroyer I used to put the VHS tape in all the time the soundtrack is definitely top tier. Love to see a fleischer cut hear in the uk the dvds and blu rays are all cut versions they remove the scene in which arnie punches the horse and couple others which ruins the movie.
This isn't a good sequel, especialy because of the drastic change in tone (child-friendly, no mature violence), but it does have some serious D&D vibes that are fun.
Funny thing, the 2 D&D kinda movie-sequels feel more connected to "Conan - The Destroyer" than this to "Conan - The Barbarian", in style/tone.
Only real good thing here was the mental-duel of the 2 saucerers in the dungeon, and Conan bitch-slapping the holy shit out of that animal. 😅
Because I'm a movie-guy, and this not being good enough, I never bought it, but now that I'm kinda looking into D&D, RPGs, Dungeon Crawler stuff, I might have to look into this again. For some inspiration, and scientific reasons, of course.
Movie-wise, there are some old things that are kinda nice, not necessarily good from just a movies quality perspective, but totaly fine for RPG-ing more potential out of your games, like "Beastmaster 1", and the best example for a good old movie would be "Krull", very underrated.
Good character-conversations, motivations, are found in the also very underrated videogame "Hunted: The Demon's Forge", a nice fantasy-action-adventure (it's basicly D&D R Rated with some LotR visuals), give it some love, Dungeon Crawlers... 😏
Thanks for the tip and the comment. 👍
Great video. Basil Poledouris. Amazing music.
Thank you! He was truly a great composer.
I love this movie, too bad we will never see that R rated version.
Apologise for none of this. Say it strong, it's all true.
My top 3 Arnold movies 3. Terminator 2. Conan 1. Predator
Agreed on Predator. Amazing. One of my overall favorites.
In no particular order, my other Arnie faves: Total Recall, True Lies, T1 & 2, Running Man, and of course Destroyer.
@@WayTooClose The main actress in destroyer is extremely HOT and SEXY....BOMBATTA I NEED U LOL
Dear channel: u did an amazing job but please don’t pretend Destroyer is better than Barbarian…I mean come on!
I respect your sentiment. There's no denying that Thulsa Doom is a way better villain. But there's a craftsmanship that comes across from the vastly more experienced director Richard Fleischer in Destroyer that I prefer.
It’s your life
I can only watch the first conan.
Conan the Barbarian is the better film for sure but I know for a fact I watched this one more than the original. Its another one of those films that I watched all the time with my mom a lot as kid along with Predator 2, Robocop and Scarface. My parents pretty much let me watch anything. lol
That's hardcore stuff for a kid!
My big foray into the R-rated world was Total Recall.
I always like Conan the destroyer better than Conan the barbarian, barbarian was just dark I don't care what great actors they had in that movie I just didn't get it, but Conan the destroyer storyline was just much better to me, I remember going to the movies I was 12 in 1984 I was so excited to see that movie, never like Conan the barbarian
