EMERGENCY BIZARRE CHAIN OF EVENTS & LIFE SAVING ACTIONS F-35 AVOIDS BIRD STRIKE DISASTER • LOSSIE

- Ladies, gents and teddy bears, in this bizarre hour and chain of events that happened at RAF Lossiemouth, nothing could prepare what was coming for the two pilots flying the 5th gen stealth aircraft, F-35B Lightnings from RAF Marham. The F-35Bs were due to land at RAF Lossiemouth but whilst airborne things were going wrong at their destination.
Typhoons were awaiting clearance for departure and ordered to hold as there were Typhoons taxiing across the runway which you can see in the distance. The first chain of events was a Typhoon about to leak fuel out of the fuel vent located on the tail, right across Runway 23. Although Typhoons can vent fuel, this amount however is NOT normal. The leak couldn’t have happened at a worse moment and it looked as if the Typhoon waited to leak as soon as it set foot on runway 23.
With the arriving F-35s imminent, the runway had to change to the less frequently used runway 28. This is when things turned from bad to worse but with quick reactions from the Corporal Scott Brown, a flare gun was fired from the runway caravan to warn the pilots of the F-35s not to land due to a flock of birds. This action potentially saved the lives of the pilots and people on the ground too.
Bird strikes can happen at any time but are more frequent on take off and landings. Flocks of geese are gulls are quite common at Lossiemouth due to its location near the sea and farmland.

I have an other question. Have you thought about to do the live streams on different bases outside UK?
It might be a problem right? Cause the rules are different. Here in germany we're usually not allowed to take pictures direction the us base.
I was in RAF Lossiemouth back in 1981 when one of my OV-10s from Sembach AB Germany had and IFE and needed to land. I was the jet engine mechanic flown over to fix it. It was a lovely 2 days there and the crews were very kind an accommodating to us. Fond memories.
Wow amazing memories and an OV-10🇩🇪 how cool.
Never got to wish you, Nikkos, Claire, all the teds and all who support the channel a Very Merry Christmas, and thank you for making our lives a liitle more enjoyable with your fantastic shows
Oii oiii thank you so much. Glad you enjoy our videos and happy Christmas to you and your family 🎅🎄🎁
When I was 10 years old in 1972, my father was posted to the then RNAS Fulmar, shortly to become an RAF base, back then our neighbour was in charge of the birds of prey, that were housed at the base, various falcons were used to scare other birds away…very effective I guess…father worked keeping the radar working, PAR1 being one type there…from this video I can see the hills where I grew up and my folks live now…great video cheers
Oii oiii Karl thanks for sharing the memories. 🤙🏼
Definitely shows the importance of the ground crew. Fantastic!
Thanks Rob 🤙🏼
Spent a few years at Lossie in the early 80's. Seem to recall a rubbish tip near to approach end of 28 in those days, and thermalling seagulls always caused problems. It appears the tip has gone but the gulls haven't. Seagulls near the sea - who knew?
Beret Christmas Ted, sir 😁. Thank you very much for those tremendous clips from Lossie. The angles of which you caught our Typhoons were brilliant. Had a super time up there with you, Nikos & Claire Bear. Here's onwards to 40k & slainte to RAF Lossiemouth (Lang may yer lumb reek) - long may your chimney smoke! 😁❤️
Thank you so much Margo ❤️🎉🧸
Oii oiii Margo 🩵 No problem at all and it was a lovely time for all of us in Lossie. Such great memories with some emotional weather thrown in too. By the way thanks for sending the news link for this 😎 ooohhh yeah and merry beret Christmas to you too 🩵💜❤️
Amazing footage as always but the typhoon nose entering stage left brilliant
Thanks Ang
Great video Ted & Co hope you've had a great Xmas and wish you a happy new year.
Thanks so much. You too and have a super 2024
Thank you for the videos you put on every day merry Christmas
Oiii oiii Peter thank you so much and no problem at all
Ooo amazing and incredible footage and thank goodness they are ok 😮😊
Oii Oii Douglas thank you
@@TedConingsby most welcome Ted 😆😎
RAF Lossiemouth a place of beauty! A place of some problematic goings on. Typhoon fuel issue causing Runway closure and a switch of runway. Only for birds to scupper the F35B landings. Thankfully are RAF crew and regiment are so well trained that all was good and F35B's landed. A place i need to venture too soon. 10hrs plus for me.
Thanks Ted, Nikos and Claire Bear and Margo for an entertaining stream. Dancing and Reggies too.
No:- 812
Oiii oiii Dan 🤙🏼this was crazy, we’ve never seen a leak like it. The other challenge for us was to get to the other runway which we had no idea how to get there or at least a place to view. But we made it on time nevertheless but then had no idea what was about to happen. Unbelievable but all ended well
RAF Lossiemouth ❤. Here's to all the crews up there in Bonnie Scotland.
Oiii oiii Margo thank you so much for the super oooooohhhhhh yeah
Interesting chain of events. Merry Christmas Ted and Nikos.
Oiii oiii Stephen 🤙🏼 it was unbelievable
I've never seen so many birds with a plane on approach in one frame! 😮
Great crisp footage on them landing & did I miss the flare?
Merry Christmas guys 🎅
It was unreal, and amazing nerves of steel to get through that. Thanks to the reactions of the RAF cpl on the ground firing the flare to warn the aircraft to go around which I sadly missed. You see, the problem was, moving (in other words grabbing all the kit and legging it to the other runway which we had no idea on how to get to) to runway 28 in time for the F-35s. While we were getting settled the flare had been fired but weren’t recording at the time sadly. Nevertheless, this one hour of events was insane. One thing after another.
Definitely some strange happenings. Merry Christmas to you all.
Oiii oiiii David 🤙🏼 merry Christmas man
Nice video
Thank you
Carnage! Brilliant video though
Thank you
Its all go on this channel bird strikes, fuel leaking typhooooooons, what next on the amazing TCS well you have to sign in and watch well done Nikos and Ted and see what is coming next
Oii oiiii Debbie, this was the most unusual one hour and it was one thing after another. This was the perfect example why they keep practicing “touch and go’s” and circuits because one day they are going to need to do it for real but in this case with a flock of birds 🦢
Merry Christmas Ted!
Oiii oiii merry Christmas 🎄
That must have been incredibly loud when those f-35’s came in to land
Average we have for the F-35B using our sound meter known as the “Ted-o-Meter” is 132db when landing, so yes, very very loud
And this is why our brilliant & brave pilots train, train & train some more peeps.
Way back in the 80's I saw an A10 take a bird strike in one of it's turbofan's at RAF Donna Nook AWR, thankfully it safely managed to limp to a safe landing at nearby RAF Binbrook.
It sure is Colin. We do see lots of comments from people when we are live why pilots keep doing ‘touch & go’s’ or ‘low approaches’, well this is why.
@@TedConingsby Yep totally agreed. I used to watch various tri nation Tornadoes(RAF, Italian, German air forces), up at what was RAF Cottesmore(now the Kendrew Barracks Royal Anglian Regiment) doing countless countless circuits " touch & go's".

By the way, of you've ever wondered how some people get their call signs, this is a textbook example. His is probably already hero, or birdman, which after 20 years, or when he retires and does an interview on youtube...he can retell the story of why his call sign is Birdy.
Hmm ... wonder if someone in that crossing Typhoon which dumped fuel now has the callsign Dumper?
I witnessed a near bird flock collision while a american F35 was landing at this years Frisian Flag at AFB Leeuwarden. It was sick. Never knew they could steer that much with such low speed.
Hopefully the pilot doesn’t have to pay the fuel bill on the leaking one😂
Was a crazy amount, never seen anything like
Does anyone know please if any flying at Lakenheath between Christmas and New Year please and if so when ?
Pretty sure it’s closed until after the New Year
They will not be flying between now and New Year’s Day.
That’s great thanks for the help 😊
Merry Christmas everyone
Merry Christmas 🎄
Best wishes to you Ted Nico Claire Lossie is a stunning place which i worked at in the late 70's early 80's good area good people good beer oy oy savaly
Thanks very much Barry have a great Christmas
There's something about that upper door and drooping rear nozzle on the F35 that looks so unbelievably ugly.
As they say in the cricket: "It's all happening here today!"
Ooohhh yeah
USAF ground crews are not issued flare guns. That is a great idea. Good job on the RAF being old school.
🤙🏼thank you
@@TedConingsby Also as a former maintainer I like this tyle of video. It high lights some of the challenges of both Aircrews and Maintainers in the launch and recovery stages of a sortie. Thanks for that!
Thank you so much for serving sir 🫡 Teally appreciate your comments, our channel tries its best to highlight all roles in the air force and the challenges that each role can face. Thank you so much
looks like seagulls -wouldn't want to run into a flock of them !!
It was chaotic with so many gulls
1:28 whats goin on with that smoke on thingie on that plane on the far end of the runway?
That's not smoke, that's fuel unexpectedly being vented, as described in video and description
That’s the fuel leak pouring out of the fuel vent
Fuel efficent ;) thanx for the answer. :)@@TedConingsby
Did I miss the flare?
Sadly we weren’t recording at that moment. It was just before they were on initial
The events noted are part of many days seen by runway caravan controller, it was my fave RAF job for 3 years. I also covered bird control for 4 years. The hazards at Lossiemouth are well known and assorted methods are taken to reduce risks.(grow grass long, drain standing water and dedicated wildlife management on patrol, among several others )The F 35s were on a pairs break to land.
Great proactive reaction from the airman in the runway caravan. Great work
I see no flare
Sadly we didn’t get a chance to record that part as we were focusing on the F-35s. But, it did fire. There’s even a news article about it too.
Eurofighter. Not Typhoon. The Typhoon was a thoroughbred of the Hawker stable were as the Eurofighter is a mongrel of dubious parentage. So lets hear no more blasphemy of the name Typhoon. Happy Christmas.
It’s called different things in different countries. In the RAF it’s called the Typhoon FGR4. In Italy it is the F-2000A, Germany it is just called Eurofighter and in Spain it’s called Tifón. All have their own specs too happy Christmas
❤wishing you all merry Christmas
Oiii oiii merry Christmas 🎄🌟🎁
