This is the classiest channel I've ever seen on youtube. I could give a fuck about the taste of liqueur because I'm underage, but just watching these videos is so soothing and relaxing.
After 3 years of playing with cocktails at home your list basically sums up my bar at the moment. What i would also add to a beginner's purchase list is a bottle of Triple Sec - it is versatile and can be used in many cocktails. Keep up the good work :)
Good question! I like making long island ice tea. I have used a cheap non brand tripple sec, and now I bought Cointreau. I cant say I taste a lot of difference between the 2. But I would say Never go super cheap, I once bought cheap light rum and the taste of my daiqiri was just bad.
I dont know why, but I recently found the smaller bottles of Cointreau at you'll never guess.. my local wal-mart! on cleareance for 6.98 each, I stocked up on 8 bottles. Im honestly worries they might be discontinuing the smaller bottles though, I cant figure why else they would be on clearance. but yes, I may have mid shelf vodkas or Tequila in my bar.. but I will never sub Cointreau.
how do you want to taste the different Triple secs in a garbage island ice tea...!? It really depends on which drink you are gonna prepare. The long island is THE example of a hodgepodge of spirits where the only goal is to get wasted
Somewhere in my storage locker I have a book on stocking your own bar, and mixing one cocktail each day. First day of the first week, you buy gin: every day of that week features a recipe for a cocktail that uses Gin plus mixers. Second week, you buy white vermouth, and every recipe that week uses either gin or vermouth or both. And so on. God, it's a brilliant book. It was published in the UK anonymously, and I can't for the life of me remember the title but it was something unremarkable like A Year of Cocktails. If you find it, would love your thoughts on it.
tdot22 if that's you opinion, it should be the title of this video too. This is literally just a selection of alcohol to stock up, why are you even watching this?
That's a very good list to stock up any bar. I think you should also have included triple sec and orange bitters. Many cocktails use these, so they're basic to have. I mean, you can get fancy and add absinthe, St. Germain, Fernet-Branca, amaretto, limoncello, sambuca and countless others, but to think that you can't make a margarita or a martini would be less than ideal!
+Alonso Castro yep, if you like those cocktails definitely need to get triple sec! This list is what I've found covers my preferences and most of my guests tastes
Can you show us your recipe for margaritas. You seem to have unique twists on your cocktails. I loved your ginger syrup instead of ginger beer for moscow mules.
Personally, I would swap the Peychaud's out for orange bitters, as I've found I've gotten more mileage out of the latter than the former in my own home bar.
I love your channel! I turn 21 on March 28th and have been watching your videos over again, especially this one, to have at least a little knowledge about liquor. Thank you for your great quality videos! Please keep pouring!
I like how there are so many cocktails, you can literally think of a phrase off the top of your head, and there's a cocktail named after it. So, for example, when you mentioned dark rum cocktails, for no particular reason, I thought: "[swift] kick in the nuts," and there is indeed a cocktail that by that name calling for dark rum. I must have read about it in a cocktail book and stored it in the back of my mind.
thank you so much for this video! i know i'm a little behind on discovering your channel, but i've been marathoning your stuff all day. i've been in my own place for a while now and often entertain, but have never quite figured out what to have on hand besides vodka and a concerning amount of wine. so this video and the whole "getting started" playlist is particularly invaluable! thanks again!
Everything also goes with tastes. Campari isn't for everybody hehe. Since I like more tropical cocktails and the such I would add Triple Sec (or other orange liqueur) and/or blue curacao to that list.
Hi there! just a quick compliment on your channel. Bartending for guests is a hobby of mine but it seems to have very little quality information on. I've turned to looking at many forums and such to gather whatever information I need. in short, I wish I found this when I had first started as the information here is great. Keep up the good work, you've earned yourself a subscriber!
Liquor is stupid easy to get where I live, and the liquor selection often mirrors the store. My state used to have 1000 foot limits, but they did away with those and they relaxed minimum prices. It's now stupid cheap to find quality products, and the variety is ridiculous.
Missing an orange liqueur... I favor Pierre Ferrand's Dry Curacao. Cointreau is a classic, of course. I also like Solerno, Grand Marnier, and Bauchant. I went through a bunch of these while searching for the perfect sidecar haha.
A great rundown of the standard bar. I would have included a Brandy and a Triple Sec because these two would give you many more options for cocktails, especially with a fruit juice.
Should probably get a nice blended scotch as its so versatile, almost every scotch, bourbon and rye based cocktail can be substituted by a blended scotch. Also, triple sec.
In Prohibition cocktails, tequila and vodka were not used. Cocchi Americano makes an awesome Dry Vermouth substitute; Punt e Mas can replace Campari + Sweet Red Vermouth in a pinch and is less expensive; finally, add some Cognac and Applejack. Bitters = Angostura, Peychaud's, Regan's Orange Bitters, Absinthe (New Orlean's Herbsaint) Sweetener = Simple Syrup, Grenadine (Liber and Co.), Honey, Triple Sec (Cointreau), Orange Blossom water, Rose Water Mixers = lemon, lime, orange, soda water, tonic water, cola, ginger beer, eggs, mint
@Joe Second and then there is that one guy who brings his own scotch because he knows you don't have any, drinks it straight, gets bored with your other friends and spends the rest of the evening emptying the entire bottle, looses conciousness, but still wakes up first the next morning, hungry and thirsty, sneaks into the kitchen, clears out your fridge and then walks home because he won't be driving for the next three days.
I found your channel during the pandemic and I am using this as a template to build a foundation. Any plans on doing a "advanced stocking" or a refreshed version of the First and Advanced bar? Cheers from Germany :)
Your video started to randomly play in the background and I only heard, “keep vermouth refrigerated...” I guess it was good fortune because I just opened a bottle and had stuck it on the shelf.
Damn, my favourite is missing! No brandy. TBH it isn't a popular drink, a lot of bartenders don't even know what I'm asking for. Cachaça is great too, especially in a caipirinha. Great starter list to please most.
I've got gin sweet vermouth Campari and Aperol for now (i know Campari AND Aperol, but i love the Negroni and the spritz is super popular here in Italy). I can afford 2 more bottles, what should i get? I was thinking burbon/rye and cointreu.
I love all you videos and have watched most multiple times but enough about my boring life.... do you think you could make a video about bitters? Like a little back round on them and how to make some. Once again love your videos!!!!
Cocktails are the only alcoholic drink I even like. But I think the key problem with this suggestion is it assumes that you aren't even remotely picky about cocktails. Unless you can find me a cocktail I actually like containing whiskey, gin, tequila, dark rum, or vermouth, they're just going to sit there and not even be opened. Also, as I don't like any cocktail in which you can actually taste the alcohol (this is why I only like cocktails), I think high end liqueur is 100% a waste of money. My list involved finding cocktails I like, and just buying the ingredients for them.
The sweet vermouth, in this video, is called "carpano" and that's the "antica formula" version, that means old recipe. It's absolutely fabolous, most likely the first vermouth ever (1786). Not because i'm italian, but trust me, a lot of people says a real negroni must be done with that vermouth, and they are so right :). But it's also one of the most expansive vermouth. A red martini it's perfect for starting a home bar and it costs 1/3 or 1/4 . If you whant a great vermouth, but less expansive than carpano, try the "cocchi". Always from torino. Cocchi+buffalo trace bourbon and you make the best manhattan ever. Try it and tell me ;)
Can anyone give me and example or two of the cocktails that require or benefit from triple sec? a lot of people are recommending it but I haven't seen much of it so far
Heyyyy, Mojito's! That's my favorite drink ^_^ I would absolutely love to see how you tackle Mojito's, sometime! The last batch we made was with amber rum (El Dorado). They turned out quite nice. I hope you do Mojito's sometime, really looking forward to it (even if it's far off).
Hello. Great channel. Can you please make some cactails made of common alcohol types. I dant have a bar yet, but i always have Scatch or burbon, vodka, tequila and gin at home. But it is hard and expensive to buy some coctail sirups or other ingredients special to bartender for home use. I would like to learn how to make coctails from most common spirits and daily used products. Thanks. Subrscribed and watching all the videos.
The are not all created equal though. Compare the LCBO in Point au Baril on 69 with Crossroads in Yorkville with two tasting rooms and bottles over $1000
HELP! I bought some sweet vermouth about a month or so ago but it has not been refrigerated and I opened it a month ago as well. Is it still okay if I put it in the fridge now or is it fucked?
+gskibum we have state run liquor stores in PA so you really only have one option for where to get liquor. When I go to other states and see it in grocery stores it's crazy to me
Hey I live in PA too! It seems to really depend on the store you go to. There's a handful in my area that have varied selections so sometimes you have to shop around. You can also order from their website and have the product shipped to your store. I've done that a few times for my liqueurs.
Just throwing this out there. This website is the PLCB (Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board) store locator. www.lcbapps.lcb.state.pa.us/webapp/Retail/Storeloc.asp If you're near a city it's probably stocked with more variety than a remote store. It's hit or miss on the knowledge. Typically the older and more run down employees know more about liquor than you and I will know in a lifetime of cursory shopping. Beer is just being sold now in certain grocery stores and so is wine. Mainly you still have to go to a beer distributor.
You say vermouth is the only perishable liquor you have here but doesnt tequila degrade after 3 - 6 months after opening? Does that count as perishable?
your channel and content is great It just also makes it really easy for an alcoholic to justify their drinking as a "hobby" or a home bar don't stop or anything but yeah
One thing that always comes to mind when people are "seriously" talking about cocktails, noone ever talks about the drinks I can find at bars (at least around here). In bars they offer a vast amount of fruity cocktails such as Piña Colada, Swimming Pool or Tequila Sunrise. Is there a difference between cocktails consisting of mainly juice and those not containing it? Also I noticed (at least around where I live) noone ever uses bitters for cocktails. The drinks in the videos always seem so classy in comparism to your everyday Sex On The Beach you can order in every bar. I'd really like to try them but I just can't find the right place to do so. Even in so called cocktail bars they only serve this juicy stuff. Oh and btw, I live in Germany. Maybe we Germans just don't know about cocktails, because we have our beer :)
Haha I wouldn't say Germans don't know about cocktails (after all, you've given us the gift of Jager), but it is very true that craft cocktails have recently seen a MAJOR resurgence here in the states. Although I am very surprised that you guys would have all the tropical cocktails and leave out the high end liquor-based drinks. After all, tequila sunrise doesn't exactly scream "German" to me
Mark Rebok that's pretty much the point. (Young) Germans don't want to go out and drink 'german drinks', it's like german folk music and the like. Also if you want to drink something 'german', you can go with one of the hundreds of different beers or (a bit more sophisticated) an excellent wine, but for most people cocktails are just a way to get drunk quickly without having to cope with the alcohol flavour. It's sweet, juicy, easy to drink. (I'm not saying, this is a bad thing though, I just feel like this might answer your thoughts)
If you want to try some out, an idea would be a cocktail party. My friends and I had this horrible habit when we were younger of stealing custom drink lists from restaurants. We would each choose one and get the ingredients, then test out the amounts until we figured out what tasted best. We weren't fruity drinkers either. I figured out my preferred recipe for manhattans and old fashioned's at those parties. A good rule of thumb is that the ingredients on a restaurant drink list are usually in order of volume, list food package ingredients. If drinks are listed to have 2oz of alcohol, try 1.5oz of whatever the first one is, then .5 of the other (or 1, .5 and .5 if there are 3). Good luck!
Why the fuck would he use two of the cheapest cachaças in the market? Even amongst the mass produced stuff, those two are one of the worst you can find that can still be called cachaça. If he can't get his hands on some artesanal cachaça, at least suggest something good enough to be exported.
I haven't really found anything that Campari is good in. The flavor of it is just foul. Also have to give a slight protest to your recommended vodkas on the site. Tito's is very hash with a bad ethanol burn, and Smirnoff isn't even good enough to call vodka. I would have liked to see Kettle One or Absolute on that list.
Campari is just his personal preference, I personally prefer Aperol. But you may just not like aperitifs. Also, regarding his vodka choices, I find smirnoff to be incredibly neutral. But hand crafted and small batch vodkas are always better, while a little pricier.
Good list, but something about the vodka. Vodka can be very harsh to drink and taste like rubber alcohol for the worst ones, but if you can pick a nice vodka, it can open a world of flavors and sensations. Buying a cheap vodka is not a good option if you plan on making good cocktails in my opinion. Good vodka is exensive, but rewarding, here's a few: Grey Goose, Belvedere, Crystal Skull, and if you live in the U.S, you can buy the wonderful Boyd&Blair potato based Vodka
I might be late to the party, but fuck it. Im from Poland and quite recently I've attended bartendering course which was led by guy with like 20 years of experience. He said that 9 out of 10 times vodka tastes the same and the rest is in your head planted by marketing, popularity etc. He said he's been making quite a few blind taste tests with previous course participants and the answers were totally random. He even said that whenever he goes to the bar and orders vodka he always gets the cheapest one (which in poland is famous Żubrówka (one with bison grass), perfect example of decent vodka that doesnt taste like shit (aka isnt in that 1/10 examples where cheap vodka actually IS terrible. These are quite rare, people).
This is quite right. Vodka tends to be the same except when dealing with the super cheap ones... Just buy Smirnoff. It's cheap but doesn't burn anymore than a greygoose or something. Stay away from the McCormick as that is some Vodka that definitely burns.
This is the classiest channel I've ever seen on youtube. I could give a fuck about the taste of liqueur because I'm underage, but just watching these videos is so soothing and relaxing.

It's worth it to spend the money on premium brands such as Cointreau and Solerno. They really improve the drink when it calls for triple sec.

+Alonso Castro thanks for the note, my margaritas actually don't include triple sec and so I didn't feel it had a place in this starter kit.
Fair point re: margaritas. Not everyone uses triple sec in them. But what about Cosmopolitans? Long Island Iced Teas? ;-)
+Alonso Castro yep, if you like those cocktails definitely need to get triple sec! This list is what I've found covers my preferences and most of my guests tastes

A great, mid-range bourbon is Henry McKenna 10 year Single Barrel. It runs $30-$35 and well worth it.
Everything also goes with tastes. Campari isn't for everybody hehe. Since I like more tropical cocktails and the such I would add Triple Sec (or other orange liqueur) and/or blue curacao to that list.

Finally an answer! I was wondering why I could never find Angostura bitters in that glass, now I know. Now I just need to find that bottle
"Best liquor stores"...I live in a state where you don't get a choice. It's ABC store or no liquor...
@MarkThisWayAfterlol probably. But if you are in Hawaii, would Foodland or Times have liquor/liqueurs?
MarkThisWayAfter or Virginia.

These are so fucking well produced. Glad to see some serious passion and care in production. Keep it up
This is so helpful. I'm looking stocking a home bar when I move into my next apartment.
For the title card at 0:05, overlay a dark background on top of the video to make the white text easier to read.
Bitters = Angostura, Peychaud's, Regan's Orange Bitters, Absinthe (New Orlean's Herbsaint)
Sweetener = Simple Syrup, Grenadine (Liber and Co.), Honey, Triple Sec (Cointreau), Orange Blossom water, Rose Water
Mixers = lemon, lime, orange, soda water, tonic water, cola, ginger beer, eggs, mint
I also have Goslings, Rittenhouse, Antiqua vermouth, Campari, and Glenlivette in my collection. Good choices
What I started with too. It lasts a while depending on how often you have parties or what liquors your friends like.
Pierre Ferrand Dry Curacao and Cognac as well
I didn't know vermouth was perishable cause I've never had a bottle last long enough to find out.
"Theres always that one friend that wants a scotch on the rocks." Got me there.
@Joe Second
and then there is that one guy who brings his own scotch because he knows you don't have any, drinks it straight, gets bored with your other friends and spends the rest of the evening emptying the entire bottle, looses conciousness, but still wakes up first the next morning, hungry and thirsty, sneaks into the kitchen, clears out your fridge and then walks home because he won't be driving for the next three days.

Always have a bottle of Malort in case you live in the Chicagoland area. Or try Ethel’s Eye of Newt.
Oh God. Malort is pretty awful, but I live in Chicago and it's strangely worth it in the bar sometimes. Did this guy not mention Tequila?
Your video started to randomly play in the background and I only heard, “keep vermouth refrigerated...”
I guess it was good fortune because I just opened a bottle and had stuck it on the shelf.

one thing is must say i would switchbourbon for scotch. i rly dont like bourbon, but thats just my opinion

Great video, love Buffalo trace!
nice! great summary of each type of liquor.
I've got gin sweet vermouth Campari and Aperol for now (i know Campari AND Aperol, but i love the Negroni and the spritz is super popular here in Italy). I can afford 2 more bottles, what should i get? I was thinking burbon/rye and cointreu.
Yeah the triple sec should be in that list. (Cointreau, grand marnier) should even be before angostura bitters in my world.
You're fantastic! Love to see you make a sazerac, or anything that uses peychaud's bitters
i dont do much mixing, i usually settle for a good ol scotch, so i have a glenlivet 18 years. it doesnt take an expert to tell its tasty on its own.
My liquor cabinet is always stocked with Irish Cream.
Because why start your day with an Americano, when I can start it off with an Irish coffee?
probably because i have to drive :C
I wish I could afford to buy all of those at once 😔. I wanna have my summer bar set up soon for get togethers lol. Thanks Nic!
Could you do something with Fireball whiskey? The taste got so plain, I'm tired of having the bottle with me. Thank you, and all your videos rock!

Hey I live in PA too! It seems to really depend on the store you go to. There's a handful in my area that have varied selections so sometimes you have to shop around. You can also order from their website and have the product shipped to your store. I've done that a few times for my liqueurs.
Just throwing this out there. This website is the PLCB (Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board) store locator.
www.lcbapps.lcb.state.pa.us/webapp/Retail/Storeloc.asp
If you're near a city it's probably stocked with more variety than a remote store. It's hit or miss on the knowledge. Typically the older and more run down employees know more about liquor than you and I will know in a lifetime of cursory shopping.
Beer is just being sold now in certain grocery stores and so is wine. Mainly you still have to go to a beer distributor.
Nick! You still haven't ironed that cloth, please do it ASAP, gets on my nerves.
Now that you pointed that out, I can't watch again without fixing my eyes on the folds.
Don’t forget a bottle of St. Germain. Aka “bartender’s ketchup.”
is that vermouth green? O_o
no
its just the bottle.
Have you ever considered doing ASMR? your voice is perfect
Mary Colomaio you're absolutely right
You say vermouth is the only perishable liquor you have here but doesnt tequila degrade after 3 - 6 months after opening? Does that count as perishable?
It's a good point, tequila will oxidize after awhile and infrequent users should invest in an inert gas spray
Ah, great idea. Btw I love your channel
wut about sweet n sour? o-o
ı like manhattan but my country banned bitters :P ,ı try it many combination equlation liquor ı failed always ;-;
As much as I've tried, I can't stomach campari. It tastes like potpourri.
your channel and content is great
It just also makes it really easy for an alcoholic to justify their drinking as a "hobby" or a home bar
don't stop or anything
but yeah
where is brandy?
Idk I haven't heard anything! Is she ok? Is she missing or something?!?!
SenselessSensey I've never heard a fellow german use the word vermouth / Wermut, so no, we probably don't know anything abour cocktails :D
SenselessSensey yes. Propably so...im german too and ive never even ordered a martini...soo
Good luck!

Did you have used before some drink from Brazil?
like "51" or "Velho Barrero" usually called here as "pinga".
Cachaça is the name.
Good vodka is exensive, but rewarding, here's a few:
Grey Goose, Belvedere, Crystal Skull, and if you live in the U.S, you can buy the wonderful Boyd&Blair potato based Vodka
TheKlargh How can you make an arguement for good vodka and offer up Grey Goose, what is wrong with you?
Your background music triggered ptsd. Comment if you get that reference
I swear I heard this somewhere lol
Getting Over It...
I have to say that I'm not the biggest bourbon fan. I prefer irish whisky or scotch
E.g. a whisky sour with irish whisky, it's just glorious
+Kitsuneoni you can always substitute
As a Kentuckian, I feel obligated to put bourbon in everything from eggnog, to burgers
An old fashion do best with bourbon, its a lean mean killing machine if its done properly.
I guess I'll just have to invest into a good bourbon for once
HOW TO PRICE THE DRINKS
This is what I stocked my bar except i replaced the tequila with cognac to make the sidecar
Tequila is perishable also 3-6 mo life after opening like so he can see
Edit if 100% Agave
