    “We are a heavy.” “That makes two of us.”
    “Unless you’re gonna go work for JetBlue, don’t go in there.” “Well, that could be someday, but not right now.”
    “Where would you like us to go?” “St. Louis.”

      Uhh, can I ask you a question? Is HEAVY a call sign for 747?

    • @ChemySh
      @ChemySh 4 года назад +14

      @@human9458 "heavy" is a suffix added behind the plane's actual callsign for big planes (usually upwards of 136 tonnes) because they cause more wake turbulance when taking off, so tower has to wait for extra distance/time before the next plane can take off without running into the turbulence.

    As a former controller. supervisor and tower chief, I always get a kick out of "Kennedy Steve". My only question is how in the world did he get away with all of his "unusual" phraseology? I was a controller at Miami tower years ago, and if we used phraseology anywhere near "Steve's", we would be spending a lot of time in detention! That being said, Steve was always clear and concise and I loved listening to him. Happy retirement Steve, and give those ramp rats hell!

      I've noticed that too. I'm not sure why to be honest, I can understand that a lot of non-native English speakers might have trouble keeping up with the wordplay so its unsurprising they tend to be the worst at joining the jokes, but I still can't think of a reason British pilots tend to beat out the Americans. It seems to have a lot more parity in non-ATC areas. Perhaps the British ATC use a less formal style, or the British pilots are less on edge being used to the small number of very major airports like Heathrow? I really couldn't say for sure.
      @@eustaceomalley6071 To be fair if he was almost hit earlier and then given no warning to stop a second time he has quite the right to be upset. He isn't putting it in a report and he isn't completely throwing down as a lot of pilots have done with far less reason, and the final "none of us are perfect" people are taking to be him salty but as a Brit its very clearly said as accepting her apology and moving on based from the tone. People seem to be assuming sarcasm as we tend to use sarcasm a lot, but that really isn't the case with that comment. Whilst on that point, calling her out on it actually was said as a semi-joke and people (the ATC included) took it as a serious attack on her. It was more meant to be "this isn't great, please focus, but its a joke so we can avoid anything a serious comment would bring" which ended up not being avoided anyway. "Not your usual standards" is a very common joke/phrase in Britain so I can appreciate the confusion.
      So joke/complaint (pilot), misunderstood/escalated/query (ATC), explanation (pilot), apology (ATC), apology accepted (pilot). Had she realised the first was part joking it would have gone on with his comment and no response, had he used a different way to point it out it wouldn't have happened like that either so hes to blame for the (lack of) clarity, shes to blame for the initial error, but either way from a British point of view it really wasn't meant to be remotely as serious as people are making it out to be and I don't consider that poor from the pilot. There are some examples I've not been happy with from BA of course, but that just isn't one of them.

    I hope Kennedy Steve is enjoying his retirement. He's sure made pilot's lives easier and provided many of us out here in "TubeLand" many happy moments. I have started looking up flight numbers because I am curious where some of these birds are arriving from. It is quite a worldwide menagerie. (assuming the numbers are the same.)

    I have only recently discovered this and it is just wonderful. Only improvement I could suggest would be a background map of the ground at JFK. Oh! I kept on scrolling through the comments, and the second such one presented actually does work, the one from flight aware. so thank you.

    Just found this channel and it gives me a serious dose of the giggles every day. Love KS! Thanks for putting this together! I've flown out of JFK a zillion times over the last over 30 years (passenger not pilot) and never thought they have this much fun with ATC. There needs to be another KS there.

    Is Steve looking at a radar screen with an airport diagram overlay as he handing out taxi instructions? I downloaded a copy of the map for fun and it’s busier than Times Square on NYE. No clue how he keeps track of everything.

    I had to spend time researching the terminology, layout, and definitions along with usual ATC conversations. I'd thought these were funny before thanks to Kennedy Steve's quick wit and humor. Now that I'm understanding a majority of it, it's 10x funnier. :D LOL.
