Denny Doherty (1940-2007) (lead vocals on this song) was a Canadian (Halifax, NS) singer and songwriter, best known as a member of the folk-rock band The Mamas & the Papas. Born on November 29, 1940, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Doherty began his musical career in the early 1960s. In 1965, he joined The Mamas & the Papas, a group that achieved significant success with hits like "California Dreamin'" and "Monday, Monday." Doherty's smooth tenor voice and harmonizing skills contributed to the band's distinctive sound. Despite internal conflicts within the group, The Mamas & the Papas became one of the most iconic bands of the 1960s. After the group disbanded in 1968, Doherty pursued a solo career and later joined the reformed Mamas & the Papas in the 1980s. In addition to his musical pursuits, Denny Doherty also ventured into acting and theater. He passed away on January 19, 2007, at the age of 66, leaving behind a legacy as a key figure in the folk-rock movement of the 1960s.
Thanks for the info on Denny. He and Cass really propelled the vocals in this group. Although in this one you can clearly hear the high notes from Michelle (whom I was in love with as the quintessential 60s girl). Of course, John was extremely talented as well.
It's cool that younger people such as you enjoy the music of my generation 60 years later. When I was growing up we we weren't groovin' to the best of the 1910s!
The main ingredient in the Mamas and the Papas’ harmonies is Cass Elliott. The songs “Words of Love” and “Dream a little Dream of Me” demonstrate how expressive and unique her voice was.

Not a capella, but vocal harmony groups. A capella basically means without instruments (the translation is something like 'in the manner of the chapel). Good to see you enjoying this group! May I suggest "Twelve Thirty (Young Girls Coming to the Valley) " as your next M&P song? The harmonies, again, are just unearthly on this one. It was also one of the key songs used in the film " Once Upon a Time in Hollywood".
When John Phillips told the other 3 that he wrote a song about Monday, they thought he was crazy. Who would want to hear that, they said. Turned out to be the group's biggest hit. John was a genius at vocal arranging. Right up there with Brian Wilson. No wonder they were friends. I suggest you watch the movie "echo in the canyon".
At first in the song, he doesn't mind Monday but it was ruined when his partner left him ("but Monday morning, Monday morning couldn't guarantee that Monday evening you would still be here with me").

RIP: Mama Cass Elliot 💔🔥🎤U R Missed Hello Phil & Sam, sadly we lost Mama Cass E. to a heart attack when she was at the tender age of 32 yrs. old. Cass Elliot's wonderful vocals and bright smile permanently enchanted fans during her time with the "Mamas & The Papas" and she had just began having great commercial success with her solo career after leaving the group. But her heart attack occurred just as she felt she was making the transition from "Mama Cass" into her own individual identity. Here's another song to give a listen, if interested. "Andy Williams & Mama Cass Eliot." (by the channel: Elias Athens - Egaleo) Here's another live performance of her singing with Andy Williams, on his show called "The Andy Williams Show." It was a very memorable collaboration between the two very talented artists. Williams sang the song "Words" while Elliot sang the song "Words of Love". In the lyrics Cass Elliot advises men that simply reciting words of love won't win a girl's heart anymore. Instead, she encourages demonstrating love and admiration by taking her somewhere she's never been before. This was fun, it brought back some wonderful memories. Thanks for sharing.
Beads. Fringes and love beads are required to be a proper hippie. 😂 Cass Elliot, the heavy woman, sang a stunning "Dream A Little Dream Of Me". That voice is like crystal! And of course, John Phillips wrote "Kokomo" made famous by the Beach Boys in a come back act not too many years ago. He wrote most of the songs for the Mamas and Papas, and a number of songs other people sang, like John Denver. Heh-heh, far out.
Yes , it was a short time that we were able to hear this great group as well as other wonderful musicians from the era. It was success and drugs that ended The Mamas and The Papas. Like so many groups from the time…. Struggling musicians/singers have a big hit . The record companies and their lawyers ( who are slimy on their best days) try to maximize their profits and keep as much money away from the artists. Drug use was new to suburban kids, it was glamorous, and it kept the artists high and away from business. These kids were suddenly famous. They had groupies, places to play, and what seemed like all the money they would ever need The Mamas and The Papas would record a song, play a concert and then get and stay high until they needed more money to get more drugs. The people around them knew they could legally, and not always legally, steal them blind while they were high, happy, and in a state of oblivion. Drugged out musicians don’t stay focused, consistently write new music, and fall apart. Sadly this happened to this wonderful group. 4 drug addicts will not be stable , not work at their craft, and only want their next fix. Then the business people will see there is no more money coming in will drop them and find their next band/ victims to use and steal their money. It was a sad story that was repeated many times. Many great artists of the era died from drugs, most barely survived and got sober but never regained their prominence, and a very very few prevailed. So when you hear a song or a few from someone in the 1960’s until the early 1980’s you can understand why they just seemed to stop and the music ended. Like child actors used until they would grow older, record companies and their executives knew they had a short time to use, steal, and throw out their meal tickets.

It may have been a short time, but they did a lot of great songs in a short period of time.
A great song ! A great group!
Monday is the first day that you yearn for Friday.
1968 disbanded , most of their recordings were from and started in '65 and '66 everyone knows that
One of my all-time favorites of theirs is, This One is Dedicated to the One I Love. Cheers\=/\=/
I love Michelle Phillips ☮️
Perhaps it is just me or maybe others in the comments section will agree,...
The song is best listened to while driving in the car on a sunny, summer day with the windows (and top if you're in a convertible) down and the volume cranked up.
RIP: Mama Cass Elliot 💔🔥🎤U R Missed
Hello Phil & Sam, sadly we lost Mama Cass E. to a heart attack when she was at the tender age of 32 yrs.
Taking me back to my youth! Back to 1966!
If you’ve seen the Janis Joplin video at Monterey Pop, Mama Cass is in the crowd while Janis is singing Ball and Chain.
Monday morning she was still with him!!. But Monday evening she was gone! Good morning but not so good night. "BUMMER"
Like their sound and the 1960s & 1970s was a great 20 years of music
Beads. Fringes and love beads are required to be a proper hippie. 😂
Cass Elliot, the heavy woman, sang a stunning "Dream A Little Dream Of Me".
Michelle Phillips was on a Star Trek The Next Generation episode. 😊
nice video and im first
Maybe you should listen to their daughters in a group called Wilson Phillips 😂
Great voices, but the material was just average.
@@ffjsb so? I was just letting them know that the music continues on through generations but there's always a hater somewhere ty for your opinion it's like assholes everyone has 1 and they all stink
The version you listened to was the studio version but played through the tv studio set; the mix is better straight off the record.
If you like harmonies...how about some Hollies...'Gasoline alley bred',
or ' The Air That I Breathe.'
