As a mechanic I much prefer old school. A proper manual hand brake & an ignition key. Will out last the test of time. Keyless entry & push button start are just any other thing to go wrong. it is one feature I could do without.

Skoda is my European car of choice, they are amongst the best of VW Group cars, their storage options are excellent, and their internal dimensions are usually impressive against the cabin space in many larger vehicles. The 4 cylinder in the Scala is without doubt the better engine. We drive a Karoq Sportline which has impressive performance and excellent driving manners with amongst the most comfortable of car seats I’ve ever sat in. We also have one of the introductory Karoq’s from a few years back that has a 1.5 litre high torque engine which is also great to drive and has always been problem free. I don’t like Skoda’s high prices for accessory Packs, and think they’d do better in Australia to include everything in the cars they sell. A great review as always.
I picked one up today, brand new 44km on the clock, was slightly disappointed with the speed, but then found the Sports Mode which changed my perception. Appreciate the video for giving me a greater insight.

The suspension could be a little firmer also, the new Fabia feels better there.

Yep, I'm very familiar with this engine setup, as it's the same engine and trans in our 2021 Volkswagen Polo 85TSI Comfortline. I don't mind it actually and we're still getting pretty good fuel consumption too, currently sitting on 6.1L/100km. The Scala used to be a great value buy, as was the Kamiq when it was first launched, but not so much anymore. Unlike the Kamiq though, the Scala has never received the same attention from Skoda and always seemed to be restricted in sales. The upcoming facelift has definitely given the Scala a much upmarket and harmonising look and even has a hint of the current Fabia about it at the front. I'm a Skoda fan and I'm hoping to make a decision on a demo Karoq 110TSI Style either this week or next. Fingers crossed.
About to buy the 1l version and it felt great. The car really sells itself. Seriously good looking inside and outside and enough power on the road. Looking forward to be able to drive the 2024 version in about 6 months 😅
It was a toss up for me between the Scala and the KIA Cerato when I was making the decision on what new car to purchase earlier this year. I almost went with the Scala but chose the Cerato instead. Just like the Cerato, the Scala is a good practical hatch too.
Same here. We were tossing up between a Scala or another Cerato (already owned one Cerato). But we went with the Scala in the end. The Scala had just been released and their Launch Edition had a lot of extra kit and the dealers were running some other promotions. So that got us over the line. Though our second car is an 8 year old Cerato and it's still going strong. Definitely my 2 hatchbacks of choice.
Good on Skoda, handbrake turns still available... With the Corolla they need to import the wagon version, try an Octavia wagon, or a Golf wagon....Stand out in yer wagon when everyone is driving suv's
This is a good value hatch and has everything I’d want and economical to run with 3 cylinder engine - 1.5 version price would make me consider a Golf instead as more $ means more options
Really like your reviews - very succinct. Keep doing the cross-shopping section, as that’s what us punters are doing. Whilst I appreciate many things about Škoda I personally would rather go for an mg4. Cheaper to run & service,no transmission to deal with, quieter, government rebate, & probably better resale in the future.
Complaining about manual knobs for AC? I've just driven Tesla Model 3 and the fact that I can not touch nobs and have to take my gaze from the road to do basic stuff is ... concerning. GIVE ME MORE KNOBS! :)
Nice cars really wanted the Monte Carlo but drivers seat doesnt slide back enough to be comfortable! stupid as there is loads of room in the back for the seat to go further back!
IMO the manual AC controls are a good thing. Easy to operate at anytime, particularly on a bumpy road, and absolutely no need to glance down, and take your eyes off the road. Can’t say the same when this feature is only accessed via a touchscreen ! IMO the roominess of the rear seat, that has Air vents, & 2 x USB & map pockets, the boot is huge, and things like LED lights, digital dash etc, make up for other shortcomings, of this particular model, as Skoda have to delete some features etc, to help keep the price down. The rear end looks like the previous Skoda Rapid.

Yes Matt I totally agree Exactly same situation with the Kamiq But All cars have gone up in price by heaps, compared to their RRP in 2020 So IMO Your comment applies to most vehicles when comparing its 2023 spec and RRP etc, compared to 2020… If we try and put aside what cars cost etc pre 2021, then as of today, the Scala is, relatively speaking, a good car and good value for $$$ when compared to its competitor product. Of course, the new breed of Chinese vehicles, and some competitor product is less expensive, but u get what u pay for. IMO Skoda product has various attributes that make it a better vehicle then those particular competitor products. Each to their own with regards to your own personal opinion of value for $$$, and what things with regards to a new vehicle, are important to u. EG - brand name & safety features & fit n finish & quality of materials etc I still shake my head at the cost of a new Yaris in 2023, even though it’s an all new model, with more safety tech etc, compared to the previous generation of Yaris… 🤷🏻♂️
I think I’d prefer the manual a/c controls over the ones in my Kamiq Monte Carlo which are within the entertainment unit. Glad I found your channel. I like the way you suggest alternatives to the car you’re reviewing.
The Corolla could pay you to drive it and it would still be the most useless alternative because North Melbourne will win a flag before you can get your hands on a new one.
I have a Scala 2022 and I agree about the road noise over rough surfaces. But most of the Scala YT reviews until 2021 say that road noise is not an issue, it is quiet, were they just wrong or did something change on the Scala during the Covid crisis? Some people say the car was better before.
Your folks are right. The blacked out rear window looks exactly like the Volvo C30. Personally I'd wait for the facelift because I think the front of the current Scala is a bit dowdy.
I love my Scala! I got mine in 2021. It’s a shame that the price has increased and less is being offered. Mine came with a panoramic sunroof, wireless phone charger and electric tail gate. Even if these aren’t included, I think it’s still great value for this price point. One thing to keep in mind, is the parts can be expensive. I had to replace a popped tyre. It costed $400 and was pretty hard to get hold of. It seems there’s only one manufacturer for this model of tyre.
I bought the Launch Edition Scala couple years ago (though it was significantly cheaper back then). We are loving it. Bought it because its small length meant it would fit in our garage more comfortably than the Cerato. Plus the boot fits so much stuff. I just wish the boot was a little wider. If you have wide items like a guitar case then it can be tricky. But it'll take plenty of suitcases for a week away.
The stop start function is cars never really bothered me, at the end of the day your not launch controlling at take off and you shouldn't also care about people behind you in traffic driving up your ass, if you follow the speed limit and don't let other people's stress get to you when driving than these minor little details on the engine choice should be a problem as most car reviewers make them out to be

Thats great and all but when you have screaming kids and hands full of luggage, remote entry is a very stressing hassle.
Also, you can't do a driving test in a car without a manual hand brake.

It wasnt too long ago when a hatchback was around or less than 4m, this this is longer than many compact SUV's.
