The fact mentioned in the interview that the US needed Israel, and supported it militarily, as a counterpoint to Soviet influence in the Middle East, although a valid point, ignores the main and core reason for the continued conflict in the region: the discovery of oil and other rich resources during the early decade of the 20th Century which the US, France and the UK, could only control through planting seeds of conflict and division well before the Sovient Union became a major player in the region. The Soviet Union became a major player only when Gamal Abdel-Nasser failed to secure financial aid for his economic programs from the West during the 1950s, and the then-USSR obliged by giving a 'carte-blanche' with no strings attached. This enable Nasser to build his various national projects culminating in the construction of one of the greatest project of the 1950s: The Aswan Dam. Through many hollow declarations, the West pretended to promote democracy in the Middle East post WW1; but it was control of the oil resources which was their ultimate aim. Israel is the robot they built to provide proptection for those resources - a robot which has grown out of control ever since its creation in 1948.

I have a hard time believing that the world was ever that young, wahad tnayn. It seems likely that these potential consequences were considered unimportant.
