I grew up in Ft Madison. In the 60's and 70's, it was a booming little town. Most of our streets were brick, not so much anymore. Thanks for giving a shout out to the Fort Restaurant. It is owned by a guy who was a year ahead if me in school and his brother. That place dates back to the 40's. I hope you have a nice time and come back!
Summer 1970 was the last time I was inside the depot. Looks similar to memory. Can't clearly remember the counter. Is missing the SantaFe logo on the north wall and no posters for the Super Cheif. I always liked the Fort depot. The lobby was warm and inviting. The Santa Fe did not maintain Galesburg depot before replacing it with that terrible sterile office building. Loved the exterior. Interior not so much. Starting in 1900, my father's side of the family worked for the Santa Fe. So until Amtrack, once a month, we would take the train somewhere on a pass. At least once a year, it was Fort Madison. After Amtrack, the Fort Madison passenger depot moved to a terrible metal building in the Shop tonight yards. So glad the city helped move back to a proper depot!
The 'psssh' just before is opening up the air brake more to stop, and the whoop is the air compressor coming on to make up the main reservoir pressure.

Clarify: loved exterior of the old Galesburg depot, not the interior.

Question: What causes the "whoop" sound?
The 'psssh' just before is opening up the air brake more to stop, and the whoop is the air compressor coming on to make up the main reservoir pressure.
I been on a Amtrak train about 4 times and I love it

Is This The California Zephyr That Comes Through Omaha NE?
No, the Zephyr splits off a couple stops up the line. Trains 3 and 4 are the Southwest Chief.
4:53 - Any relation to Detroit Tigers Hall of Famer Al Kaline?
Is that a Southwest Chef
