hi keith,i bought this printer a year ago and love it but after watching your video im acheiving even better prints ,thankyou so much for your in depth review👍
I do not have a photo printer at this time - but it is my intention to print my best efforts ( when they appear) - your presentation was just whet I needed to help me make a choice. I was impressed by the amount of support that Epsom provide - and had not considered the properties of the different papers - so I am really glad I gave this post a look- Thank you. all the best Tony
Glad to have helped. If you wan more info [and links to all related videos/articles] see my main [written] reviews for the 8500 and 8550 - they are the same, but for size www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8550-printer-review/ and www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8500-printer-review/
Just purchased this printer and looking forward to getting to grips with all its settings. This printer got the highest rating on which magazine, that’s partly the reason I bought it the other reason was having ink tanks. My previous Canon printer had me robbed with the cost of ink cartridges and the fact that it wouldn’t work properly with generic cartridge.
For a lot more info [and links to videos] check my actual review [the main written one] www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8500-printer-review/ It includes links to all my supplementary videos I'd also suggest the 8550 one, since apart from width, the two printers are interchangeable www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8550-printer-review/
The fact you said it's capable of high quality printing speaks volumes. Im doing a head alignment every day, just to get ink through the heads and stopping drying up etc (good idea???) It seems that Epson have really upped their game over their competitors at this price point. All in all a superb presentation Keith - many thanks.
Thanks The one here comfortably sits unused for a week - I don't even fire up large format printers _every_ day ;-) Once a week is more than enough - remember that this is a consumer printer so designed more for intermittent use than bigger printers.
I believe it has an auto sleep function after so long? I might switch it off at the end of the day. There is nothing to be gained switching it off after printing unless you know you're not using it for a while@@martinchambers6930
Hello Mr. Cooper. I'm from Poland, I was looking for a good budget-quality printer and you just made it so simple :) Thank you! I whish all the reviews were so detailed and detailed as yours. Best Regards :)
👍 Thank you, Mr. Cooper. Very, very helpful information provided in this video, and since I've been researching the 8500, you've cleared up a lot of questions I had about it.
Thanks again. After watching many of your videos I am sure it is wise to pick 8500 or 8550. Not only because of the print quality but because in these higher end modules you can change the maintenace box yourself! With the cheaper Epsons you cannot. And especially if we print a lots of borderless prints the maintenance box gets fuller (I assume). I really don’t want to pay 100-230€ for an easy maintenance box change (or pads washing), that is actually a counter reset. Now I am only wondering can I afford and should I get the A3 version or this… 😅
The maintenance box is NOT the same as the borderless sponge. There are very few printers which have this as a simple replaceable part [P5300 is one]. Almost all printers suffer greatly in different ways if used a lot for borderless - borderless just makes a mess in most printers...
@KeithCooper oh, ok, good to know. So must we send the printer to Epson service to change the borderless sponges when they are full? Anyway, the maintenance box you cannot change yourself in the cheaper Epson models.
Hello Keith, I did a lot of research to the Epson 8500 and your videos/website helped a lot👍🏻. I want to use the printer only with mobile devices (Ipad and android phone), because I don't have a computer anymore. Is it possible to tell the printer via mobile which paper feed it should use? And are the printing settings very limited compared to the settings on a computer? I haven't found an answer, i hope you can help me.
Sorry - can't help there. I only ever really test mobile connectedness as a 'proof it works' - The Epson Print Layout app seems fairly good for this [on my iPad - only apple devices here] No effective printer colour management makes such devices useless for anything more than office/document prints or simple snapshot printing on an OEM photo paper from my personal POV
Hi Keith, I received my new Epson ET-8500 a few days ago and I wanted to say a big thank you for your detailed and easy to understand talk through of setting this printer up. It's refreshing to have someone who is articulate and down to earth in their approach. I've looked at the Epson manuals and done a web search but am struggling to find any guidance on what options to use for "power" settings. Auto Power: On or Off (On was already ticked) Power Off Settings: Power Off If Inactive - Off, 30mins, 1hr, 2hr, etc. (Off was already ticked). Power Off If Disconnected: Off or On (Off was already ticked). I will be using the printer for printing some emails, pdfs, and some 4x6 photos too but this won't be every day - so what do you recommend I se the above items to? Hoping you can advise. Regards,
I'd leave them at defaults - I don't know of any specific benefits from changing them If you've not seen them, do check my 8500/8550 written reviews - more detailed info than the videos www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8550-printer-review/ and www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8500-printer-review/
Thanks for the video. I had bought this printer at the offical EPSON store, but it appears to be a Dead On Arrival device. While setting up the printer I get error 034004 and it keeps yelling that there is paper in the printer, while it doesn't had any prints at all. It has not even filled tanks. Another issue was the printing head was stuck and makes rattling noises. I've contacted the EPSON customer service, but than the real pain begins to send the printer back. Hours long calls and e-mailing with customer service is a pain. I have never experienced a more poor customer service than the service from EPSON, its a real shame for such a big company. Current status is that I brought the printer (in person) to an official repair service of EPSON to bring it in as an DOA. And I am now waiting to get my money back. This is now 1.5 month ongoing. I still need a new printer and have lots of inkt left of my previous ET-7700. I am in doubt buying a new ET-8500 again. If so, not via the offical EPSON store. They don't know what they are doing there.
Thank for this video, I bought the ET-8500, there was a great -50% discount. Now I have to wait to recieve it. The most difficult now is to have good ICC profile with good papers too :) .... I go check others videos ou made for the ET-8500. See you there ;)
Thanks - all the videos and articles are referenced via the main [written] reviews at: www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8550-printer-review/ and www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8500-printer-review/ The two printers are essentially the same, but different sizes
I have watched several of your videos regards the 8500 and used these videos to print a number of photos on my new acquisition. I have been astounded by the picture quality on old photo paper that I have had for a long period of time. The set up for using the rear paper feed had me scratching my head for a time as directions were rather vague. Anyway I am really impressed , more so since the price in uk has dramatically fallen recently.😅😅
Glad it was helpful! For lots more info and links to all related videos see the 8550/8500 reviews www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8550-printer-review/ and www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8500-printer-review/
Really good content. I think it's obviously far too little appreciated. He's like the Bob Ross of printers. Helps me a lot in deciding on this device! Love goes out!
Thanks - it's been many years since I had hair that vigorous ;-) Incidentally, if you've not seen it, there is far more info in the main [written] review for the 8500 www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8500-printer-review/
I would recommend you always have a spare maintenance box just because Epson sometimes is out of stock on them. I have a P900 and they were out of stock for several months. Fortunately I found another vendor. I now keep a spare one. $20 well spent in my opinion.
What kind of inks are typically preferred for printing on transparency sheets? Have you had any experience with that? Also, love your reviews. The in depth topic discussions are on point.
Thanks In general, pigment inks are needed to get the density. It does depend to some extent on the coating of the film though. If you want to use it for alternative process aa a negative, this makes a lot of difference. Always best to check on a specialist discussion group for that...
Hello Keith I have just bought the Epson 8500 and just came across your review. Can you explain to me where is the setting for printing vfa. I've never come across this before. Is it preset? Sorry but I'm new to printing and only usually select print and keep with the standard settings but I want to produce better photos. I use both a Mac Pro and a windows pc. Great informative video with loads of info covered. I have subscribed and looking forward to learning so much more. Thanks.
VFA is a media type. See my main [written] 8500/8550 articles for more [and links to all videos/articles] www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8550-printer-review/ and www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8500-printer-review/
Hiya Keith! I’m considering buying this printer as I print on 200-300gsm card and photo paper and my two previous printers both struggled to pull the media into the printer. Would the rear tray print on thicker photopaper up to 300gsm or is it only the straight through print path that could handle this? Also, as I print for a busy Etsy shop, would the rear tray (rather than the straight through)hold a number of sheets or can it only take one at a time? You’re currently the only person I trust to give me sound advice! Thank you x
Have you read the main [written] review? - this has far more details about my testing - see also the 8550 review www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8550-printer-review/ and www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8500-printer-review/ As to 'busy etsy shop' pay careful attention to print speeds and the limits of stacking [single sheet for thicker]
Hello, I am delighted with the detailed explanations you give about the products you analyze. I just bought this Epson ET-8500. But I can't find ICC profiles for the brand's own papers. can you guide me? Thank you so much.
There is no info - some are installed with the driver IIRC The nearest is the list I have of ones I made for the 8500/8550 reviews www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8550-printer-review/ and www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8500-printer-review/
Thx for the note about baryta papers. Epson Traditional photo Paper it’s not bad but I got roller marks. You can use the straight path feeder but it’s not worth it. I also agree that b&w prints better with an icc profile on most papers. With advanced b&w mode you get slightly better gradient but it’s not neutral. I’m curious to see how the new Ecotank you are testing will perform with b&w
Hi there Great channel thank you for being so thorough with your review question for you is what is the best setting I need to apply to get the highest quality of print? for refrence im usung a matte finish card stock 16-18pt not glossy and advice will do thank you!
Thanks - I'm afraid almost any mention of 'card stock' suggests potential disappointment - this printer [like most desktop inkjets] only works well with card meant for inkjet use, which is rarely called 'card stock' and never measured in points - that's generally for commercial print use [units only used in the US IIRC] See the main [written] review for a longer discussion about media choices and settings www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8500-printer-review/
Ok thank you for refrence ithe paper im using is from Vistaprint Matte Finish on a premium paper 5.5 X 8.5 with printing on it already i just print high quality pictures on it so if that helps let me know sir thank you! @@KeithCooper
Hello Keith, sorry to trouble you but I'm pulling my hair on the following issue. I have no issues printing straight forward photos. However, when I try to print a card from a layout using Epsom Print Layout. I have a layout 280mm x 140mm which allows me to have a front and back, so happy with that. This is issue is whenever I choose Rear Paper Feeder - Standard, it always want to print from Cassette 2. If I take the A4 paper from Cassette 2, it just says out of paper. Cannot print using the Rear Paper Feeder. Really appreciate any help.
Check the specs in my main reviews [i.e. the written one] I didn't think such custom sizes were allowed? Could also depend on the media selected. I take it you are not printing 'double sided' ? That's exceedingly limited
Hi Keith I love your channel and the way you present it, I have a question i live hear in the UK can you recommend a reliable place i can purchase all my paper for the Epson ET-8500 Thank you,
The three suppliers I use are Paper Spectrum, here in Leicester PermaJet and Fotospeed They will make profiles, but be careful with art papers if they suggest using the matte media setting rather than VFA - this needs deciding on a per paper basis [as described in the main written 8550 review]
Hi Keith, I had a quick question I hope you can help me with. I am currently contemplating buying this printer or the (much cheaper) et-2851. I will mostly be using it to print small zines, so I’ll put 8 small pages on an A4 and then later cut them out and put them back together in a little booklet. These zines are filled with photo’s and graphic design work. I won’t be printing on glossy photo paper but want the pictures and graphic design work in a high and professional quality. Do you think It’s worth spending more money on the et-8500 or do you think the quality of the colors and prints on the et-2851 is high enough for what I’m looking for? Thank you so much for the insightful video!
Yes, 8500 - read both actual [written] reviews and note the info about inks and media types - the videos are supplements ;-) www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-2850-printer-review/ www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8550-printer-review/ and www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8500-printer-review/ Forget duplexing as well - too many limitations [borders]
Keith I’m watching this video before actually buying this printer. I the Choosing Paper section you discuss the importance of using the correct paper, but you didn’t discuss how to choose! Do I just print on a trial and error basis with different papers to see what works? Do you have another video that explains how to choose?
At the level here it's more about types of paper since I'm assuming an international audience [I'm in the UK] The best places to start are the main [written] 8550 AND 8500 reviews where I list all the papers tried [it also links all related videos] www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8550-printer-review/ and www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8500-printer-review/ The two printers are essentially the same - the 8550 review has more about how the inkset relates to paper choices. Feel free to email me about any details?
Great review. Thank you Keith. Are there any printers that can print on A5 folded to A6 borderless? That seems to be a limitation of this printer as you describe.
Some take custom sizes, but not borderless. I can't think of any doing it natively, but that's me not have a perfect recall of printer specs as opposed to actual data... Most of my reviews have as detailed specs as I could find www.northlight-images.co.uk/photography-articles-and-reviews/printing-paper-reviews-articles/
I have just sent back Canon TS3530i and Epson ET2851 because they couldn't print 300gsm card, (even though I was assured I could print card. Do you think this would work? Thank you :}
Well, I printed it on a 2850 [don't know the canon] www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-2850-printer-review/ See here for what I tested www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8550-printer-review/ and [essentially the same, but smaller] www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8500-printer-review/
Thanks - Probably only if it's a properly coated paper. Non-inkjet papers generally print poorly on inkjet printers The edging might also cause difficulties for paper edge detection, but the lack of coating is usually the killer. There are more details in the main [written] review if you've not seen it: www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8550-printer-review/
Hi Keith..just bought an ET8500 and i'm getting a green tint on my b&w prints in the darker areas using Epson premium glossy paper and Epson print layout with it's icc profile for that paper..wasting lots of expensive paper at the moment..do you have any ideas for a solution the the green tint problem please.
Yes - don't print on that paper with that profile... More useful perhaps... ;-) Print using ABW mode from EPL See the B&W specific section of my main [written] review www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8550-printer-review/#bw
Thank you Mr. Cooper, like you mentioned in the video, I got roller mark on the thick paper, could you do a video to show how to clean the paper rollers? I tried to clean all visible rollers but the mark won’t go away, the roller mark is on the center bottom of the paper, thank you in advance!
Do check that your firmware is updated [from the printer control panel] I have looked at more extreme cleaning, but I don't have this printer here any more I'm afraid
Thank you for your video. This helped so much. I would like to print on tranparent paper to create overlays. The Color always come out quite fuzzy. Do you have any suggestions?
@@KeithCooper Thank you for the quick answer "Fuzzy" like, its no sharp line it looks like the ink is bleeding out a bit. I fear that its not a suitable paper for the printer
Great video Keith thanks! I'm looking to buy one of these primarily for b&w prints and B&w digital negatives for alternative processes. Do you think if I use Epson Glossy paper I'll be ok for my prints? Is there a setting i could use that would incorporate the pigment black on transparencies? Thanks
Thanks. I don't think the single pigment ink has enough density for digital negs For general use see the main [written] review: www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8500-printer-review/
Hello Keith, great video again. Is there no other possibility to use the pigment black ink other than the selection of Velvet Fine art paper in Epson print layout for this printer?
Thanks Well, VFA also works when I print directly in Photoshop. Any use of the print driver allows for media selection. There is more detail about this in the 8550 written review, where I tested it.
Hi keith, i'm interested on this printer for graphic design projects. Do you recommend this printer for the following kinds of paper or should i stick to my local print shop for these specific formats? Glossy sticker paper Holographic paper (vinyl) Transparent paper Thanks for your video! i've been watching it throughout my day and it's very interesting how much you know about this :-)
Mr. Cooper - I've got 60lb. Red River Polar Matte (double sided, Item no. 1941) - Am I okay with this printer with that paper? Edit: I hope so as I just ordered the printer. 😉 I used to print exclusively with that paper and an Epson 1280. I was all in on the hobby, but I gave it up as the time required started wear on me: profiles, calibration, errant prints, expensive inks and clogs, etc, etc. Now my kids grown and I'm retired and can devote some more time to it. Also, I hope, that the clogs and expensive inks problem is solved now. I don't use Photoshop any longer. I use Apple Photos on all of my devices and Procreate on my iPad. That's it, so I hope that those programs will play well with the printer and offer me enough in the way of configuring my prints to my liking. I will want to print postcards, folded cards, an occasional contact sheet and the occasional panorama. I won't print large so the 8500 should suit me fine.
To your amended info... Accurate colour is simply not possible on an iPad - there is no facility for using profiles. Apple Photos also leaves a lot to be desired in some aspects of print. I'd suggest getting a copy of Epson Print Layout to print from. See the profiles I created and other info in the two main [written] reviews [the printers are essentially the same]. I have profiles which would likely work with that paper. Remember, all the real detail always goes into my written reviews ;-) www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8550-printer-review/ and www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8500-printer-review/
@@KeithCooper Sorry, I just use iPad with the Procreate app, but I send everything to my iMac for printing. That said, it looks like I can use Epson Print Layout on my iMac as well. That’s probably a good idea as Apple Photos has some wonky/limited printing options and capabilities. Thanks for the tip. Look forward to following your channel.
I am new to photo printing. Would you say using epson's native print layout software is a good starting point? I use lightroom for photo editing and export into jpg files usually in sRGB. Should I print inside lightroom or bring the exported jpg files into epson print layout?
I'm biased against Lightroom, so not the best to ask ;-) The Epson software works well, but lots of people seem happy with lightroom. If you're comfortable with LR, give it a go?
Thanks Only if you can find stickers which are designed for inkjet use. The usual type suffers from ink not drying properly or rubbing off at the slightest touch
Hello Keith Thanks for a good video. I am looking for photopapers there is A3+ wide and up to 2 meters long. Where did you buy your paper and Can you tell me what brand it is. I live in Denmark, so I will try to find it here first. Best Flemming
Thanks - the papers [13" roll] came from Epson and Fotopseed [UK] so I've no idea what might actually be available in the EU, and shipping is not easy these days :-(
I have a new problem with this printer. No matter which paper or options I use, the printer leaves pressure lines on the papers. Been trying to get this solved with the Epson support, but they just suck. I have found some forums saying that they have similar problems but only when printing on bigger papers, and that it has to do with the firmware update. Anyone else with that problem?
Sorry to hear this - the firmware update should have no connection with this. If someone gave me a printer, the first thing I do would be to do a check that the printer has the latest [you can do this from the control panel] If I had the problem with every paper I'd demand a replacement or warranty fix
Hi Keith, i recently bought this printer and noticed that i get marks from the pizza wheels on my prints with glossy paper. Any guess on how to fix it? I thought about removing the pizza wheels and hope that the paper doesnt jam.
This is an effect I've not seen on the printer, but I have heard of. I've never experimented with such fixes since they are loan printers and I don't think Epson would appreciate me doing it ;-)
Hello Keith! I am having a problem where everything I print on the EPSON ET8500 is desaturated and has a blue hue to it. Do you know how I can fix this?
Not enough info to say with any certainty... However, print a known good test image with Epson Print Layout - that will check the printer is working OK.
On a Mac? If so, see my main written review and also video about NOT installing the airprint driver - this causes EPL to fail, and is generally useless for any print...
Yes I am doing that right now. I noticed now as I'm watching that I do have airprint driver. I'm very grateful you have made all these videos. I hope it works! Thank you@@KeithCooper
Hi, nice and detailed review, my best compliments. I’m an honey producer and I’m looking for the best printer to print my stickers. I usually outsource the production, but I would like to make them by myself. Could you suggest this printer for printing on a4 adesive paper that must be cut off for final stickers of 6x4 cm? Do you suggest other models?
Thanks Label printing is not an area I have much experience of - the real problem is finding a media which works well in the printer - and is sufficiently robust. The printer is a good one, but such media varies so much the only way is to try it. For example, a printer with all pigment inks might be better or it might not. This is one where you need to find someone who actually makes such labels.
Thanks for your kind and quick reply. It’s hard to get the right information from the supplier regarding his instruments. Could you say that printing resolution on paper is at top level? Or there are other better options with tank system?
If you were a beginner about to start selling your photos to people, wich one would you pick between this model and the epson expression photo hd xp-15000? I'm very concern with the ink costs
Sorry, but I cannot answer this... "Which printer" is essentially the wrong question to start with On it's own, it means nothing I'm afraid, without a _lot_ of additional info I have a whole play list connected to the business side of photography, many videos devoted to the 'I want to sell prints' question... There is no answer to your question, as phrased... I'll have a video looking at this soon...
On Windows 11 when printing I have two printers showing, ET-8500 Series (Network) and Epson589fe89 (ET-8500 Series). Can anyone explain why there are two please, and which I should select?
Received my ET-8500 yesterday, seems a great printer but I cannot get any driver except AirPrint. I have installed the drivers from the Epson site but it seems I cannot select them anywhere. My Mac is running macOS 14……any ideas anyone I’m on the verge of returning it. Would it be due to its setup on WiFi only due to its placement in the room? Don’t have an Ethernet cable but do have 5m usb which may just reach. Final point to produce prints I currently only use apple Photos will this be too basic, to access driver features will I need something like lightroom
See my 8500 main [written] review www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8500-printer-review/ See also my 'getting rid of airprint' video Driver features are reduced by airprint - whilst far from ideal, Apple photos is a start - see also using EPL [in the review]
Just got my Epson ET-8500 but I can't seem to get it to work with Epson Print Layout software for my Mac running Sonoma. Keith, how did you get the software to recognize the printer?
Sounds like you have installed the AirPrint version of the driver... Delete the printer instance, go to epson.sn and install the printer driver - read the instructions very carefully - this has caught me out several times - it's covered in the proper written reviews and a video about airprint
@@KeithCooper Thanks for taking the time to answer me. When I click on the link you provided I'm re-directed to the Swedish Epson page where I'm only able to download the same installer package I used when setting up my printer the first time. It's sort of a 1-2-3 get started page. I will try to Google this 😃 Love your videos as they provide a lot of knowledge and how-to using printers etc 👍
@@KeithCooper Hi Keith! Do you connect your printer over USB cable or Wifi? I tried to use the drivers on the UK Epson page, but it doesn't work. I think I need to connect the printer with a USB print cable and not over Wifi, because I can see the printer is using the AirPrint driver, and does it every time I set up a new printer instance in the system preferences.
One I'd created for the canvas... An HP Artist matte I've several A3+ boxes of the stuff - it gets wheeled out every time I need to show canvas as an option ;-)

For a lot more info [and links to videos] check my actual review [the main written one]

It includes links to all my supplementary videos
I'd also suggest the 8550 one, since apart from width, the two printers are interchangeable
www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8550-printer-review/
The fact you said it's capable of high quality printing speaks volumes. Im doing a head alignment every day, just to get ink through the heads and stopping drying up etc (good idea???)
It seems that Epson have really upped their game over their competitors at this price point.
All in all a superb presentation Keith - many thanks.
Thanks
The one here comfortably sits unused for a week - I don't even fire up large format printers _every_ day ;-)
Once a week is more than enough - remember that this is a consumer printer so designed more for intermittent use than bigger printers.
@@KeithCooperwould you keep this printer turned on permanently? Or off and on after every use?
I believe it has an auto sleep function after so long? I might switch it off at the end of the day.
There is nothing to be gained switching it off after printing unless you know you're not using it for a while@@martinchambers6930

👍 Thank you, Mr. Cooper. Very, very helpful information provided in this video, and since I've been researching the 8500, you've cleared up a lot of questions I had about it.
Thanks - if you've any other questions, let me know? I've still got the printer here for a while longer
@@KeithCooper thank you, sir....will do.
I made it through till the end, excellent video Keith😁 👍

I feel there should be some form of 'I made it' award for such longer videos!
You are inspirational. Your voice is not boring at all. You do not state the obvious several times. Liked 🤣
Thanks...
Hello Keith,
I did a lot of research to the Epson 8500 and your videos/website helped a lot👍🏻.
I only ever really test mobile connectedness as a 'proof it works' - The Epson Print Layout app seems fairly good for this [on my iPad - only apple devices here]
No effective printer colour management makes such devices useless for anything more than office/document prints or simple snapshot printing on an OEM photo paper from my personal POV
that's great deep intro for the beginners! thnx man!
Thanks - glad it's of help!
Hi Keith,
I received my new Epson ET-8500 a few days ago and I wanted to say a big thank you for your detailed and easy to understand talk through of setting this printer up. It's refreshing to have someone who is articulate and down to earth in their approach.
I've looked at the Epson manuals and done a web search but am struggling to find any guidance on what options to use for "power" settings. Auto Power: On or Off (On was already ticked)
Power Off Settings: Power Off If Inactive - Off, 30mins, 1hr, 2hr, etc. (Off was already ticked). Power Off If Disconnected: Off or On (Off was already ticked).
I will be using the printer for printing some emails, pdfs, and some 4x6 photos too but this won't be every day - so what do you recommend I se the above items to?
Hoping you can advise.
Regards,
I'd leave them at defaults - I don't know of any specific benefits from changing them

Sorry to hear that - it happens, not often, but that's no consolation. What country?

I would recommend you always have a spare maintenance box just because Epson sometimes is out of stock on them. I have a P900 and they were out of stock for several months. Fortunately I found another vendor. I now keep a spare one. $20 well spent in my opinion.
Good point - they do take along while to fill on the 8500/8550 though

What kind of inks are typically preferred for printing on transparency sheets? Have you had any experience with that? Also, love your reviews. The in depth topic discussions are on point.

In general, pigment inks are needed to get the density.
Thank you x

Thanks - I'm afraid almost any mention of 'card stock' suggests potential disappointment - this printer [like most desktop inkjets] only works well with card meant for inkjet use, which is rarely called 'card stock' and never measured in points - that's generally for commercial print use [units only used in the US IIRC]

I didn't think such custom sizes were allowed? Could also depend on the media selected. I take it you are not printing 'double sided' ? That's exceedingly limited

Glad it was of interest!
Hi Keith I love your channel and the way you present it, I have a question i live hear in the UK can you recommend a reliable place i can purchase all my paper for the Epson ET-8500 Thank you,
The three suppliers I use are
Paper Spectrum, here in Leicester
PermaJet and Fotospeed
They will make profiles, but be careful with art papers if they suggest using the matte media setting rather than VFA - this needs deciding on a per paper basis [as described in the main written 8550 review]
I’m watching this video before actually buying this printer. I the Choosing Paper section you discuss the importance of using the correct paper, but you didn’t discuss how to choose! Do I just print on a trial and error basis with different papers to see what works? Do you have another video that explains how to choose?
At the level here it's more about types of paper since I'm assuming an international audience [I'm in the UK]

Thank you for your video. This helped so much. I would like to print on tranparent paper to create overlays. The Color always come out quite fuzzy. Do you have any suggestions?
'Fuzzy'?

Glossy sticker paper
Holographic paper (vinyl)
Transparent paper
Thanks for your video! i've been watching it throughout my day and it's very interesting how much you know about this :-)
Wrong ink for those types of print media - if you've a solution which works, keep it
Mr. Cooper - I've got 60lb. Red River Polar Matte (double sided, Item no. 1941) - Am I okay with this printer with that paper? Edit: I hope so as I just ordered the printer. 😉
I used to print exclusively with that paper and an Epson 1280.
No idea I'm afraid - that's a US measurement system and a US supplier - I'm in the UK ;-)
You need to ask them - they are a very helpful company...

I am new to photo printing. Would you say using epson's native print layout software is a good starting point? I use lightroom for photo editing and export into jpg files usually in sRGB. Should I print inside lightroom or bring the exported jpg files into epson print layout?

Thanks - the papers [13" roll] came from Epson and Fotopseed [UK] so I've no idea what might actually be available in the EU, and shipping is not easy these days :-(
I have a new problem with this printer. No matter which paper or options I use, the printer leaves pressure lines on the papers. Been trying to get this solved with the Epson support, but they just suck. I have found some forums saying that they have similar problems but only when printing on bigger papers, and that it has to do with the firmware update. Anyone else with that problem?
Sorry to hear this - the firmware update should have no connection with this.
If someone gave me a printer, the first thing I do would be to do a check that the printer has the latest [you can do this from the control panel]
If I had the problem with every paper I'd demand a replacement or warranty fix

Label printing is not an area I have much experience of - the real problem is finding a media which works well in the printer - and is sufficiently robust.
Printing resolution has nothing to do with this - it's about if the media will work with the printer
If you were a beginner about to start selling your photos to people, wich one would you pick between this model and the epson expression photo hd xp-15000? I'm very concern with the ink costs

Would it be due to its setup on WiFi only due to its placement in the room? Don’t have an Ethernet cable but do have 5m usb which may just reach.

It's sort of a 1-2-3 get started page. I will try to Google this 😃 Love your videos as they provide a lot of knowledge and how-to using printers etc 👍
Go to Epson.co.uk
get v12.62

@@KeithCooper Thanks Keith, I’ll try that tomorrow 👍
@@KeithCooper Hi Keith! Do you connect your printer over USB cable or Wifi? I tried to use the drivers on the UK Epson page, but it doesn't work. I think I need to connect the printer with a USB print cable and not over Wifi, because I can see the printer is using the AirPrint driver, and does it every time I set up a new printer instance in the system preferences.
Looking for a printer to print pictures on fabric would you recommend epson 8500
No - it's not a DTF ink set
You could try some 3rd party inks, but that invalidates the warranty, so at your own risk...
What profile did you use printing on canvas with the et-8550?
One I'd created for the canvas... An HP Artist matte
I've several A3+ boxes of the stuff - it gets wheeled out every time I need to show canvas as an option ;-)
Just got this printer today from Costco. Setting it up now while watching. The paper tray is confusing and a pain to use already!
Not sure what's confusing - but I do get a lot of printers to try...
If you've not seen it, do check the main [written] review for detail and links to all my 8500/8550 articles/videos

@@KeithCooper Coming from a Canon i9900 😅 that I’ve used for over 2 decades, the print head died and now I want to try Epson (was never a fan in the past). Finally figured everything out and printed some photos. Looks good but still thinks the old Canon was much easier to setup and use. The photo color quality now I need to compare it to my old prints from Canon… thanks for sharing the link to more info! 😁👍
is printer gamut a challenge?
In what way?

[both printers are very similar - profiles are interchangeable]
How noisy is this printer? Mr. Cooper.
not very...
BUT I don't actually measure this in any testing though, so I've absolutely no figures to back that up
