Wonderful video brother!! The sharp tip and paint consistency is key it takes quite a bit of practice to find the sweet spot but when you do it opens up an entire new world of possibilities! Practice makes perfect don’t get discouraged and you will get it!! Appreciate the time you put into making this video ! In my opinion this is one of the most vital skills to learn in miniature painting!

For a very long time, I thought I'd never get the hang of it. Then I just started _doing_ it. For a while I needed to tidy up just about every line, but once I got those important considerations down, it started to become natural. Now I do it without a second thought.

That was a really great video. When I started to watch it I wondered how far the examples would go and they were really great. I had a few questions and this really answered them. I now have something to practice. That black is so nice as well. Top example!
Thank you! I wasn't too sure how best to pitch it. I didnt want the tone to be too basic for people but I still wanted to reinforce the basics.
In the end I just went with things I know help me and figured they'd be useful for others.
Black with a high contrast highlight seemed the perfect example to really show the process.

Loved how clear and concise the explanation was, I've been using a drybrushing technique to paint my models more quickly and edge highlighting is what will really make the smaller details pop without getting the paint in areas I don't want it to be

A couple more things I'd recommend:
A nice, even (but light) pressure to ensure the line stays smooth and of uniform thickness. It's best not to pick at an edge bit by bit. Holding the model in such a way that strokes are toward yourself when possible will help to make a nice, even line.
Most importantly, the consistency of the paint matters. I recommend thinning it with a bit of flow improver or drying retarder, to ensure it stays moist on the brush. If the paint is drying on your brush, you have to try harder to get it onto the surface, and it can affect the line you're making.

How would you do the small clean up with the base coat if your base color is a contrast paint? Any touch ups I do with contrast paint usually is noticeable

Came across this on Reddit. Good tips! Maybe a dumb newb question but would you ever edge highlight a model that you've put layered highlights on?

Not a dumb question at all.
So, the answer is yes but with a little explanation.
In this example I did a high contrasting highlight to make it obvious what I was painting. If I was painting something which was more subtly layered and shaded, I would still apply a final edge highlight in just the same way but I would use a colour with was much more subtle and natural
You might be surprised to discover the visual effect that can come from an edge highlight on an already layered surface. It tricks your eye into perceiving the color of the entire surface a bit differently, that is to say it enhances the highlight on the whole area, not just the edge that the paint is actually applied to. A very helpful illusion.
What's your model held with? Is it a paper-clip super-glued to the marine's boot? Makes it look so much easier to paint.

I know technique matters most, but I struggle with brushes keeping their sharp tips even with cleaning soap and all. What would be the least expensive brush you'd suggest for this specific task?

which I would certainly recommend you give a watch, if you haven’t already.
In terms of what brush would I recommend to keep a sharp point?
For sure it would be one with kolinsky sable bristles. As they are the best suited bristle for the job and being a natural hair, it means the conditioners in paint soap help to nourish and keep them clean and soft.
Personally I’m a fan of Artis Opus series S brushes and for edge highlights I use a 00

I personally don’t see the point in edge highlights I prefer two tone xenethol prime drybrushing and reductive technique with some ak interactives streaking grime and some white spirits. But I appreciate this and how damn clean those lines were.
That’s the beauty of this hobby, there’s countless styles, interpretations and preferences. It’s all about finding what you like and what works for you.

I’ve been struggling with the triangle hand lock thing with the tops of models. Like the top of a termagant. Any tips for that?
Can you recommend any brushes for highlighting? I'm not a bad painter, but I struggle with fine edge highlights and I think part of the issue is the brushes I'm using not being of a good enough quality, but I also don't want to pay a small fortune for a brush that becomes useless for highlighting after a few uses
I'm a fan of Kolinsky sable brushes. Depending where you are in the world there's a few different brands you can choose from.
Personally, right now I'm using Artis Opus brushes and they perform really well:

I tend to have a bit of a hierarchy to my brush use. I reserve my best brushes for edging, cheaper brushes for washes and blocking in and then junk brushes for mixing and basing etc.
I have found though, by cleaning my expensive brushes with brush soap after every paint session they really last and stay like new for ages. I have some brushes which are 3 years old and still going strong

I think it’s because it’s so matte and my camera equipment back then wasn’t the best. I’ve upgraded a bit since then.

I’ve had lots of people ask me if scale paints are just for pros.
Which I obviously said, definitely not. They’re not different to any other acrylic paints.
So, there’s clearly a lot of misunderstanding and confusion around them which seems to put a lot of people off.
Which is a shame, because I think everyone should have a least a couple of colours in their paint collection

And the specific paint being used for these highlights was
Graphite from Scale75. So, it’s just a standard acrylic paint basically.

I am curious of what varnish you use for the models? If using a matt black, and then add a matt varnish, is that to much matt? :-) I am sstruggeling to find the right varnish for my black templars. :-)
Paint finish is quite a personal thing I find. I like a very matte finish and tend to use Testors Dullcote or AK ultra matte varnish for mine but some would find it too matte. If you're already using a matte black though then adding a matte varnish wont make it too matte. If anything it will just correct any areas where you may have over painted some washes etc.
I say, go for the matte all the way :)

How do you know which is the best color to edge highlight? For example, what color do you use to edge highlight red?
Well, there’s no real rules to how you decide, as you can have quite a lot of creative freedom with it.
For example, blue highlights on black looks great.
Generally though, you would just go with a lighter tone to the colour you’re highlighting
You can get this by adding white, or cream or yellow etc depending on the colour you’re wanting to lighten.
I’m now thinking there’s a whole video on this topic.
Red is an odd one, as you generally need to either go the orange / yellow route or the pinks

And then in terms of paint thinness, yes it should be slightly diluted. But only so that it flows from the damp brush cleanly.

Paint thinning video is of the greatest value to my mind since it gives the understanding that is not clear on the first sight - "water evaporates from the paint, and paint lays smoothly".

What would you say is the right amount of paint for this? Every time I try to have a small enough amount as to not spread it to the wrong area, it dries out really fast on the brush and then doesn’t give a sharp clean edge. I’m struggling with this for the Revenant Wings.
It’s tricky, there’s no exact answer to that as it will always depend on a lot of factors, the temperature in the room, the paint you’re using, the brush you have etc
As a general rule though, I would suggest before going near your paint you want your empty brush to be damp. Not full of water, just damp so that it won’t draw the moisture out of your paint as you load it into you brush. It’ll also help the paint flow from the brush.
Then load your brush with your paint,
Test it on your palette / hand to check it’s behaving how you want
And then paint onto your model.
After a while you will begin to develop a feel for that Goldilocks amount.
Not too much, not too little.
Keep practicing and it’ll come 🙂

Don't thin it with water. Try a little flow improver instead, or add a little drying retarder to the water. It's important to keep the paint moist on the brush.
You already have a thicker highlight on the model, is that one also applied with this edge highlighting or do you paint that on normally to be thicker?
The thicker highlight was done in just the same way, using the edge highlighting techniques shown in the video.
The only difference is to get a slightly thicker line I changed the brush angle I used and applied slightly more pressure so more of the brush was in contact with the edge.

Do you edge highlight before or after you use shade paint?
Actually, you can do it either way.
Generally, I’ll edge after using shades in order to get a brighter, crisper highlight.
However, if I’m painting something I want a softer result with less sharp edges, like a horse for example. I’ll apply a wash after to help blend the transitions together
How much time does it approximately take to finish a power armour in such manner?
Takes me around 20-30mins
But I’m not the quickest painter by any means

I think in this I’m using a W&N series 7 00 brush
What does size 00 mean?
Paint brushes come in different sizes, with the bigger the number the bigger the brush.
000 is the smallest, so a size 00 is the next size up. It’s a pretty small brush for very fine detail.
The biggest disadvantage of a small brush like a 00, is it doesn’t hold much paint and will dry out quick. So you’ll need to refill a lot to keep it working.
Conversely that disadvantage is what I like about it, it means it’s far less likely to run out of control while doing that tiny detail.

I'm using Scale75 paints in this video. They are very matte compared to GW and Vallejo
i held my breath watching that...
I found that my first mistake is painting edge with the wrong consistency. Paint too thin just run around and make my highlight flood and going crazy~~
