- Shoulder mobility exercises to increase shoulder flexibility fast. Also a good computer posture fix.
Shoulder pain is usually related to a lack of shoulder flexibility.
But there's good news...simply practicing these easy shoulder exercises a few times a week will increase shoulder flexibility, relieving upper back and neck pain.
This shoulder exercise shows you how improve your range of motion and free upper back tension. You'll need a long wooden dowel or broomstick handle for these shoulder flexibility stretches.
When practicing these shoulder stretching exercises, be sure not to over stretch your shoulder joints. If it's too painful, widen your hands on the wooden dowel to make the shoulder stretch less intense.
Of course, if you have a shoulder injury, avoid shoulder exercises until you've seen your doctor. You certainly don't want to create more shoulder pain! If you've injured the joint or torn a tendon, it's important to get that properly checked out and repaired.
Once your doctor says you're okay to start building strength again, use this shoulder exercise to both strengthen and mobilize the joint, being very careful not to re-injure yourself and cause additional shoulder pain.

4 years of going to the gym without doing proper stretching has developed considerable tightness in my shoulders. I can only get the bar just above eye level it's crazy😂 this is going to take some time.
How’d you end up
@@EragonShadeslayer He ended up with as good mobility as the amount of proper work he has put in
Broooo I'm at year one in and it's the same dammm i habeywork to do
Same
So, so helpful. Thank you!
This stretch is very interesting! It seems like it would be effective, I realize I can't even get past my head with it, going to start working on these frequently, Right now I've got shoulder impingement issues, I've heard from others these really help, along with active and passive hanging. Thank you for taking the time to put out this video
@MyOwnWorstEneme This is a great warm up exercise for chest and back exercises. It's not a "stretch" in the traditional sense because you are moving through a full range of motion so you are lubing up the shoulder joint by stimulating the flow of synovial fluid and also tuning up your nervous system. Static stretching prior to heavy weight lifting is where injury becomes a risk.
I wouldn't have believed it was possible to go all the way back. Pretty amazing.
@SbChilli It will still help. Try getting a longer wooden dowel from a hardware or lumber store.
Thanks Sukie! This is exactly what I need.
Thanks so much! This video is everything I came here for!
Really good demo - nicely explained. Just what I was looking for. Thank you.
Susie, you're amazing. This stretch definitely helped me out a lot. Shoulder dislocation from surfing haha. Thanks!
Really well explained, thank you 👌
Thank you for the info/demo!!!
Great vid thanks! As a competitive swimmer my shoulders are used a ton so they are very tight and also require above-average shoulder flexibility. This is a great stretch/exercise and after just one session my shoulder felt looser with a very wide range of motion. It also stretches the area where I often get swimmer's shoulder which is great and might even prevent future injuries. Looking forward to seeing how this affects me in the pool.
@ACAthleticTraining I find the band stretches to be far less effective because people simply pull the band further apart instead of challenging shoulder joint mobility. It also encourages elbow bending which negates the positive effects on the shoulder joint. I wasn't always flexible and this is how I became so.
Thanks! Great find.
Wow! That's amazing! I'm gonna try this, as I have VERY inflexible shoulders.
Excellent video.Great exercise for frozen shoulder. Thanks!
great video!! my left shoulder is really jacked, gonna try this out and hope that it helps. thank you
Awesome -- I'm trying to do some pretty physically exhaustive programs that are wicked on the shoulders, and this will no doubt help me progress and avoid injury. I have already managed to hurt my cuff!
And thank you for the video. It helped a lot.
nice explanation and demo. thx
Great video, hope this well aid me with my shoulder flexibility issue with overhead press
I need to become more flexible on my shoulders for my back handsprings

Thanks so much.Really helped me an my neck pain.....
Hi Sukie, thanks for showing us the method of effectively stretching our shoulders.
But out of curiosity, do you know the stretching exercise to promote wider shoulder bones? Especially people with narrow shoulders. Thanks!
Looks nice, let me try this out
subscribed!
Thank you, good job.
Thank you for the great informative video! I really need to improve my flexibility in my shoulders and neck.
They really tend to get stiff when pressing overhead. This movement really helps! Great Video!
nice explaining indead! i will going to do these movements for flexibility by weightlift training (especially for the snatch and overhead squat)...i'll hope this can help me
Cool vid :)
I've been recomended to do this stretch to help with my shoulder flexability so i can use better form on front-squats.
Your video couldn't have been clearer, thanks :)
Thankyou very much for posting this.... This has greatly helped me in shoulder impingement problem that I had been suffering from last many years(atleast 5-6). I used to have shoulder impingement every once in a while(generlly once every month which stayed for like a week or so completely ruining my workouts as I could barely move the shoulder I had impingement in..I used to have impingement randomly and generally it was only in 1 shoulder at a time)..I watched this I think 2 months back..contd
Hello cute tall girl, thank you for the upload! It's very helpful.
great info. i'm totally stiff and can't move that far back will go as far as i can to get it better.
Thank you very much
Loved this! Thank you :)
Good vid
thank you very much
@Dezzan Just go as far as you can. Extend lots of force through your arms - pull outward on the wooden rod like you're trying to pull it apart. That in and of itself should increase the range of motion. Going as far as you can and doing this stretch daily will increase shoulder flexibility very quickly because it strengthens your shoulder joint.
Great instructional video. Thanks. Was having problems doing squats because of bad shoulder flexibility.
@LeeJHooker Yes! and when you get more flexible, you can go into a squat position and do these exercises to increase the range of motion in your shoulders and mid-back. That will help tremendously with squatting.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
@jeremiahlaird You are very welcome!
Thanks I will definitely try this. I'm trying to get over a rotator cuff and other shoulder issues. I've never stretch, so I think doing these can only help.
@alexmsbasquet It works. Depends on how inflexible you are now and how flexible you have been in the past, if you've ever had injuries, etc. Go slowly, take your time. You'll get there.
Thanks
Great video, thank you very much! :)
@crazyboondocker Yes, it is! And for a variety of other sports, too...baseball, weight lifting, gymnastics, etc.
thanks
Perfect for golfers before starting.
Good video, cheers.
Started trying to do squats properly yesterday, and determined my upper body flexibility is beyond poor, struggle to even hold the bar properly for a squat. Ill be easing myself into shoulder flexibility exercises over the coming weeks to try to fix this.
omg.... this is like one of the best stretch I ever did, and I tried a lots..... i don't have a really great range of motion, i have to almost completely go wide as possible on a hockey stick (didnt feel like using a broom lol) but at least i can go all the way back... My shoulder feel all sore and burning, I like that i feel them stretching!!! thanks alot definitively suscribing and favorirting this vid
@Pravtsios Yes, this should help!
Ooo I tried it and I felt a nice stretch in my chest after...also i feel my spine stretching alittle
@SijbrandIwema87 Try widening your grip a bit. Most likely your humerus (arm bone) is jammed up into the socket. Might also try hanging from a chin up bar a few times a week, and do lots of full ROM joint mobility. Should improve with a little time and movement.
That's magic. She can actually turn all the way!
Sukie thanks for the video how long in your experience to be able to get the bar completely behind your back. I have shoulder impingement and find I can only just get it behind my head:[ I have only just started today.
THANX
Hi Sukie - will this exercise help with an issue I have where I can not get / hold a bar behind my neck when trying to do barbell squats in the gym - I cant lower the bar behind my neck without it hitting my head - im that inflexible!
@TeppTennis One shoulder is usually more stiff because you use it more. Do you play tennis? Right handed? That would do it. This stretch increases the full range of motion of the shoulder, but there are other maneuvers that help with more finite motions in different planes of movement.
I have had problems doing low back squats because of my shoulder flexibility and I cant even get into the proper posture for an overhead squat. I had heard of shoulder dislocations (which is actually improperly named) for use in stretching the deltoids, pecs and for scapula mobility. I can honestly say that ive watched dozens of videos from elite lifting coaches and trainers and none of them were as descriptive and helpful as yours. Thank you very much!
Great video. What do you recommend if I have an imbalance of range shoulder to shoulder (stiffness/tightness only in one)?
Thankyouthankyouthankyou! :D
Hi there ;) I'm gonna watch your video and increase my flexibility.
@paulwall142 Just widen your grip a little bit to see if that helps keep your hands fully wrapped around the stick. Try to keep your fingers on, resist the urge to let them peel off. Flexibility should increase fast.
Thanks Gorgeous, you've helped me a lot!
I'm 19 and have inflexible shoulders. At the beginning of this video, my hands were at the end of my broom and vertically up was the furthest I could go. At the end of the video I got the broom all the way to my bum. Not bad for 4 minutes! Hopefully you have other videos like this to help me with the rest of my upper body inflexibility. Thanks!
Clear it with your doctor or PT first. Depends on how well healed the shoulder is. Don't push it - you don't want to reinjure your shoulder.
Hey Sukie,
how long will it take to get enough flexibility to be able to low bar squat? I will do these every day from now on.
@Sigmundps Rugh-roh! Shoulder problems are no bueno. You might look into Indian Clubs to help strengthen the joints. It sounds silly but the old time strongmen used to use them to get deep into the joint - way different muscles than you use squatting big, heavy weights, and I've seen them really help with rehab and flexibility.
surprisingly effective how much flexibility this built in 5 minutes.
5 years ago I fell off a ladder n broke my knee n landed on my back, I get a lot of shoulder and upper back pain and struggle to lift my arms up so hoping this will help :)
@blarbahblargah Sweet! So good to hear about the immediate results!
@TowfiqTheBrown I can't say for sure without evaluating your body. Check with your doctor, if the joint is too loose, you don't want to endanger it and will need to build some strength to help with joint integrity.
you have good flexibility up there.. not easy to do. will take some practice i guess
@bearclawnumber5 Great! Let me know how it works for you. You should notice results in about 10 days if you do this exercise daily, even better results after 30 days of practice.
Hello Sukie. I have a shoulder click problem in my left shoulder. If I dare to bench press or shoulder press, my shoulder instantly fatigues. Something is out of place, although an ultrasound showed everything as fine. I'm currently doing dead hangs which will hopefully fix my issue. I'll start these up again as well.
try warming the shoulders up first so there synovial fluid is less viscos
So i got a 10 year old video to fix shoulder tightness. Time to fix my shoulders.
Thank you for this video.
I have torn my labrum in the shoulder, and for a while i`m doing physiotherapy exercise for the shoulder, and I found in your video some new and interesting exercise. (we need to diversify from time to time.
Best wishes from the holly land, Israel
OMG im so tight, thank you sweetheart for showing me this, i have to practis , love.
very helpful, im a swimmer and my shoulders are very stiff due to swimmers shoulder, hopefully this will help
oh wow. i went into this thinking my shoulders are a little tight but how hard can this be?...... hard enough that i can barely get my elbows past my ear apparently. Wow. ok i have some work to do.
I'm going try this when I hit the gym this afternoon. My shoulder flexibility really sucks. I read this is good and should be used to get rid of my hyper-lordosis, in combination with the main hip exercises.
I've read that these are really good for fixing upper body posture, because it stretches the chest too, will it improve my posture? I have problems squatting due to a slight hunch back.
Hey even if you have a protruding shoulder girdle or minor winging scapula. Will this stretch help you to achieve a good range of motion like yours? or will you have to work on the other problems i mentioned.
HI, I'm just wondering, if I do this before or after my workout. I'd like to improve my flexibility in my shoulders for the military press. Thank you!
This stretch is really good for those who want to improve their form with the snatch olympic lift.
Is it a good idea to do these before my chest and back workout? Or should I not do heavy weights after stretching my shoulders like this?
I do this with resistance band..
I am trying to focus on flexibility so I don't get tight shoulders and injuries when lifting weights..
My shoulders have gotten very tight in the past from benching,
my jaw dropped at 1:38. i was not expecting that wow
I actually managed to get my hands back.. I was sure I couldn't but I did :)
I do this once a week before i squat to loosen up my shoulderjoints
